Adults: 8 Seniors: 6 Students: 5 Children under 16 (with family): FREE Audio tour: 3 REGULAR TOURS Cathedral Tours: A great introduction to the Cathedral, its history and treasures. Available on the hour from 10am 3pm Monday Saturday, admission fees apply. Audio Tour: Voiced by actor David Suchet, this flexible tour allows you to explore the Cathedral in your own time. Includes music by the Cathedral Choir. 3 charge applies. Tower Tours: Climb the 213 steps to the top of the tower and experience magnificent views across the city. See the ringing chamber, the great Cathedral bells and walk the full length of the nave roof. See website for tour times. Tickets: 6, available from the Cathedral Entrance Desk. Crypt Tours: Explore one of the oldest parts of Cathedral. The crypt provides a stunning setting for Antony Gormley s sculpture Sound II. Tours run at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm Monday Saturday (not available when the crypt is flooded). Free Children s Trail: This illustrated trail provides a fun and active way to explore the Cathedral. Discover a rich and fascinating history and find out about some of the characters and major historic events that have helped to shape our nation.

3 3 THURSDAY 8 JUNE SATURDAY 30 SEPTEMBER EXHIBITION INSPIRED BY THE WORD 'Inspired by the Word' is a multi-venue visual arts exhibition by contemporary artists celebrating the literature of Hampshire writers Jane Austen, Edward Thomas and Gilbert White. The theme chosen for Winchester Cathedral s exhibition is Jane Austen and artists who have been inspired by both the author and the Cathedral setting. The exhibition will showcase sculpture, letter carving and works in other media. Visitors will come across the works as they explore the building, prompting moments of reflection about the author. Other venues participating in this event are Gilbert White's garden at The Wakes in Selborne, Petersfield Physic Garden and Museum (new galleries), Chawton House Library and the Red House Museum garden, Christchurch.

4 4 LUNCHTIME RECITALS Admission is free for all the lunchtime recitals a retiring collection will be in place to defray costs. Full details of each event can be obtained from the website. TUESDAY 1 AUGUST AT 1PM PAUL TURNER (PIANO) A chance to hear Mussorgsky s Pictures at an Exhibition in its original version for piano. Our series continues until October. TUESDAY 8 AUGUST AT 1PM CLAIRE JONES (HARP) AND FRIENDS Claire will be returning once more not just with her percussionist husband Chris Marshall but with no fewer than 25 harpists who will share ten harps. TUESDAY 15 AUGUST AT 1PM CAROLYN CRAIG (ORGAN) (OUNDLE RECITAL AWARD) Carolyn s programme will include Bach s Fantasy and Fugue in G minor. TUESDAY 22 AUGUST AT 1PM NADINE BENJAMIN (SOPRANO) ARIAS AND MORE Nadine has performed in many operas including the title role in Tosca for English Touring Opera.

5 5 TUESDAY 29 AUGUST AT 1PM LUCY HUMPHRIS (TRUMPET) TRUMPET VIRTUOSI Lucy is now in her third year at the Royal Academy of Music and we are delighted to welcome her back. TUESDAY 5 SEPTEMBER AT 1PM RICHARD PRATT AND JOHN MINETT (TENORS) Richard is well known in Winchester as not only is he a lay clerk in the Cathedral but also appears as a soloist with many groups in the area. He will be joined by John Minett who is a member of the Cathedral s Chamber Choir. TUESDAY 12 SEPTEMBER AT 1PM INDEX CANTORUM Once more Mark Williams will be directing this fine group of singers in a very eclectic programme of music including works by De Monte, Byrd, Twist and Siffre. TUESDAY 19 SEPTEMBER AT 1PM EVA FIETCHER (SOPRANO) WITH HARRIET LAWSON PIANO Eva was a semi-finalist at the last Hampshire Singing Competition and is making a very welcome return to Winchester with her accompanist. TUESDAY 26 SEPTEMBER AT 1PM ANDREW LUMSDEN AND GEORGE CASTLE (ORGANISTS) This ever-popular recital, given by the resident organists at the Cathedral, always contains exciting and unusual music. TUESDAY 3 OCTOBER AT 1PM JAMES TURNBULL (OBOE) James is a distinguished oboist and his recital will be accompanied by his pianist Libby Burgess. TUESDAY 10 OCTOBER AT 1PM ROGER OWENS (PIANO) Roger s performances are eagerly anticipated and plans are already in hand for him to return in 2018.

6 6 CHILDREN S HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES All of these activities are free, for ages 4 to 11 but children MUST be accompanied by an adult. Normal entrance fees for adults apply. Drop in between 10am to 12pm or 1pm to 3pm. Last admission to craft activity is half an hour before the session ends. WEDNESDAY 2 AUGUST & WEDNESDAY 23 AUGUST 2017 MARVELLOUS MUSIC Explore musical instruments in the Cathedral with our free marvellous mini-trail, then join us to make a simple musical instrument to take home. WEDNESDAY 9 AUGUST & WEDNESDAY 30 AUGUST 2017 HEROIC HERALDRY Search for signs and symbols around the building with our free mini-trail, then design a shield and embossed badge to reflect your own family. WEDNESDAY 16 AUGUST 2017 FUNNY FACES The Cathedral is full of strange faces in wood and stone. Hunt for them using the free mini-trail, and make a clay funny face of your own.

7 7 AUGUST CULT SCREENS OUTDOOR CINEMA Set in the beautiful surroundings of the Inner Close, Cult Screens provides the country s most luxurious and comfortable open air cinema experience with high definition projection, giant screens and superb audio. All events are fully seated, and there s even a choice of comfy seating available from deckchairs to beanbags. There s food and drink available, including pitcher cocktails, craft beers, wines, fresh popcorn and different street food stalls. Gather friends, family and sit back, relax and let Cult Screens entertain you. SATURDAY 5 AUGUST AT 10AM JANE AUSTEN TOURS WITH COFFEE AND CAKE Jane Austen tours followed by coffee and cake in the Refectory will be held on the first Saturday of each month until November. The tour will explore Jane s connections with Winchester and the Cathedral and will include a short walk to the house on College Street where Jane died. Tickets from the Cathedral Box Office. SATURDAY 19 AUGUST AT 2PM CLOSE ENCOUNTERS TOUR AND TEA Walk the Inner Close in the footsteps of Benedictine monks and explore over 1,000 years of history, from monastic times, through the turbulence of the Civil War, up to the present day. Enjoy 'Close Encounters' with the people who lived in and walked through The Close and step briefly into their lives. The tour starts at 2pm followed by a cream tea in the Cathedral Refectory at 3.30pm. Tickets are from the Cathedral Box Office. Spaces are limited so booking is essential.

8 8 FRIDAY 25 AUGUST WW1 TOUR AND CREAM TEA The Poetry and the Passion We called it hell they called it Passchendaele In 1917, when the war intensified, we remember the horrors, the conflicts and the victories as we visit all parts of the Cathedral from the Crypt to the Bell-ringing Chamber in the roof. Be prepared 129 steps to climb! The tour will last 90 minutes with a cream tea afterwards and time to talk. Tickets: from the Cathedral Box Office. MONDAY 28 AUGUST 12 4PM OUTER CLOSE CELEBRATION OF RECOVERY Supported by Winchester Cathedral An event to raise awareness of services helping with recovery from drug addiction, alcohol addiction and mental illness MONDAY 28 AUGUST AT 4PM BANK HOLIDAY ORGAN RECITAL Featuring Christopher Herrick, Concert Organist with a varied programme of Verdi, Mozart, Bonnet, Reubke, Hans André Stamm and Mons Leidvin Takle. Tickets 10 from the Cathedral Box Office. SEPTEMBER SATURDAY 2 SEPTEMBER AT 10AM JANE AUSTEN TOURS WITH COFFEE AND CAKE See details from event on 5 August. MONDAY 4 SEPTEMBER SUNDAY 17 SEPTEMBER STARFISH PROJECT Supported by Winchester Cathedral An installation of 145 clay fired starfish to raise awareness of suicide among young people in the UK. The starfish represent the average number of the young people to take their own lives annually. THURSDAY 7 SEPTEMBER SUNDAY 10 SEPTEMBER HERITAGE OPEN DAY TOURS 10AM AND 2PM EACH DAY Cathedral guides will be offering tours of the Cathedral Close, including buildings not normally open to the public. The tour itinerary will vary depending on the day and time of the tour as access to

9 9 certain areas is restricted. Tours may include the Cathedral's brand new, award-winning, Wessex Learning Centre and apothecary garden. Free but must be booked via the Cathedral Box Office. SATURDAY 9 SEPTEMBER AT 7.30PM FRIENDS ANNUAL LECTURE JON SOPEL The BBC s North America Editor Jon Sopel has been at the centre of one of the biggest news stories of this century, the Trump presidency. He will share his unique experience and insight into the Greatest Country on Earth. Tickets from the Cathedral Box Office 18 for Friends, 22 for Non-Friends. Some concessions available. LECTURE SERIES Lecture Series to mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and its continuing impact today, given by expert scholars and communicators. THURSDAY 7 SEPTEMBER Professor Tom Greggs, The God who is Transcendent in our Midst: Divine and Creaturely Action according to the Reformation. Held at the University of Winchester, free of charge. Visit the University website to book your place. The following four lectures are in the Wessex Centre, Inner Close. Lectures are 5 per lecture or 16 for the series. Visit the Cathedral website to book your place. MONDAY 18 SEPTEMBER Revd Dr Susan Durber, Renewal and Reform: Finding Common Ground on the Reformation after the Ecumenical Movement. WEDNESDAY 20 SEPTEMBER Dr Michael Jagessar, A Reforming Imagination: Conversation Points for Today. MONDAY 25 SEPTEMBER Prof Neil Messer, The Calling of Creatures like Us: Thinking with Reformation Traditions about what it means to be Human. TUESDAY 26 SEPTEMBER Prof John Barclay, Luther, Paul and the Radical Power of Grace.

SATURDAY 23 SEPTEMBER AT 7.30PM CONCERT: SPANISH EVENING WITH MICHAEL DURRANT Michael will be returning to the Quire of the Cathedral with a very interesting programme entitled Guitar, the Heart of Spain. He will be joined by flamenco guitarist Samuel Moore and Winchester Cathedral Choir directed by George Castle. The programme includes a performance of Castelnuova-Tedesco s Romancero Gitano op 152 for classical guitar and chamber choir. See the website for further details. 11 11 OCTOBER SATURDAY 30 SEPTEMBER AND SUNDAY 1 OCTOBER 10AM 5PM HAMPSHIRE HARVEST WEEKEND A weekend of food and farming fun in the Cathedral Close. Plenty to do for all ages from buying and trying the delights from the Hampshire Fare Market to meeting animals at the on-site farm experience. There are horse-drawn carriage rides, falconry displays, vintage tractors and children s activities alongside live music and Morris dancing. A Hampshire Harvest Service with special guests will be held in the Cathedral at 3.30pm (all welcome). SATURDAY 7 OCTOBER AT 10AM JANE AUSTEN TOURS WITH COFFEE AND CAKE See details from event on 5 August. THURSDAY 12 OCTOBER AT 6.30PM FRIENDS QUIZ SUPPER, CATHEDRAL REFECTORY Kevin Ashman from the BBC Eggheads show hosts a quiz for the Friends. Bring a team or come as an individual, the evening includes a one course supper. Bookings through the Friends Office. WEDNESDAY 25 OCTOBER CHILDREN S HALF TERM HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES Puppet People! Discover the real-life stories behind some of the good, the bad and the downright ugly past people of Winchester Cathedral with our free mini trail, and design and make a paper puppet to take away. A look at Bishop William of Wykeham s household in the 14th century when King Richard the Second came to dine three times in one year. Bookings through the Friends Office. SUNDAY 12 NOVEMBER AT 10AM REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY SERVICE The parade of veterans and other organisations arrives at the Cathedral at 9.30am in time for the service at 10am. While there is some reserving of seats all are welcome. Alternatively the service is relayed outside the Cathedral and you are welcome to attend the Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial at 11am. We mark the two minute silence at 11am on 11 November both in the Cathedral and in the Refectory. SATURDAY 18 NOVEMBER AT 7.30PM WINCHESTER CONSORT CONCERT MESSIAH Former Master of the Music, David Hill, returns to the Cathedral to conduct Winchester Consort in a performance of Handel's great, Messiah, in the intimate setting of the Quire, joined by the exquisite voice of Nadine Benjamin, with superb local favourites: David Hurley, Willie Kendall and Edmund Saddington, and the highly-regarded Wessex Sinfonietta. 13 13 MONDAY 20 NOVEMBER CHRISTMAS MARKET AND ICE RINK OPENS THURSDAY 23 NOVEMBER AT 6.30PM CHRISTMAS MARKET OPENING CEREMONY Join us for the official opening of the market and ice rink and enjoy professional ice skating displays along with the blessing of the tree. SATURDAY 25 NOVEMBER AT 7.30PM CONCERT: BRAHMS REQUIEM David Thomas will conduct Winchester Music Club and Orchestra together with Winchester College Glee Club and Quiristers in Brahms Requiem. Tickets TBC. THURSDAY 30 NOVEMBER AT 6.30PM LANTERN PARADE Make your own lantern and join a fun family parade starting from the Cathedral and processing around the Outer Close. Full details will be made available from the Cathedral website during the Autumn. CHRISTMAS MONDAY 20 NOVEMBER FRIDAY 22 DECEMBER CHRISTMAS MARKET From 10am daily, closes 6.30pm Sunday Wednesday and 7.30pm Thursday Saturday Find over 100 chalets sited throughout the Cathedral Close. Exhibitors are hand-picked for their fine quality and interesting products. There s a food court selling seasonal treats to enjoy at the event as well as plenty of food-related gifts. The British Crafts Village offers a range of unique, hand-crafted goods, often sold by the designers and makers themselves.

14 14 MONDAY 20 NOVEMBER SUNDAY 7 JANUARY ICE RINK From 10am every day (closed Christmas Day), last session starts at 8.00pm. This impressive real ice rink is situated in the centre of the Cathedral Inner Close and now boasts a clear roof, providing a rain-free skate whatever the weather. The Cathedral and, for much of the time, the Christmas Market, provides an incredible backdrop to this winter playground. Children s fun skate penguins are available to hire from the skate fit marquee. Sessions last for one hour and include time to fit skates (allowing approximately minutes on the ice). Tickets include free skate hire and will be available from the Cathedral Box Office from 1 September. MONDAY 20 NOVEMBER SATURDAY 16 DECEMBER CHRISTMAS TOWER TOURS Various dates and times Experience the best views over Winchester and the Cathedral Christmas Market and Ice Rink from the top of the Cathedral tower, followed by tea, coffee and mince pies. THURSDAY 7 DECEMBER AT 7.45PM CONCERT: IN AID OF THE MURRAY PARISH TRUST AND BREAST CANCER HAVEN Christmas Concert Celebrity speakers: Hugh Bonneville, David Tennant, Olivia Coleman and Timothy West. SATURDAY 9 DECEMBER AT 7.30PM THE WAYNFLETE SINGERS: BACH S CHRISTMAS ORATORIO The Waynflete Singers annual Christmas concert features Bach s glorious Christmas Oratorio and his great sequence of seasonal cantatas, complete with jubilant choruses, festive trumpets and heart-stirring arias. 15 15 SUNDAY 10 DECEMBER THE SNOWMAN An afternoon and evening performance of the world renowned animated Christmas classic The Snowman, with live orchestral music and performances by the Cathedral choristers. Tickets TBC. FRIDAY 15 DECEMBER AT 11.30AM 12 NOON CHRISTMAS STORYTELLING FOR PRE-SCHOOLERS Hear the Christmas Story told with the help of props. No booking required. Admission fees apply. FRIDAY 15 DECEMBER AT 7PM CATHEDRAL CAROL CONCERT An evening of musical entertainment featuring the Cathedral Choirs hosted by BBC South Today's Sally Taylor. Tickets TBC. SATURDAY 16 DECEMBER AT 7.30PM DICKENSIAN CHRISTMAS Following last year s success, The Sound Ensemble return to present their dramatised interpretation of Dickens A Christmas Carol, interspersed with music and carols. Tickets TBC. MONDAY 18 DECEMBER, WEDNESDAY 20 AND THURSDAY 21 DECEMBER AT 6.30PM CATHEDRAL COMMUNITY CAROL SERVICES A wonderful service filled with beautiful music sung by the Cathedral Choir. The first service is ticketed, with priority booking for the Cathedral Community, any remaining tickets will be available via the Cathedral box office from 13 November. The second and third service are not ticketed and all are welcome. Each service is followed by a Christmas candlelit supper in The Refectory. Supper Tickets: Enjoy a three course meal after the service within the Refectory, tickets from the Cathedral Box Office.
