Exploration of the island what do they find? Heaving the rock p. 28 what does this illustrate about the boys newfound freedom? Encounter with the pigs p. 31 What does this scene reveal about the boys, particularly Jack? Consider the thematic element of this scene. The pause was only long enough for them to understand what an enormity the downward stroke would be (31).
3 Chapter 2 Fire on the Mountain What is second assembly? What is Jack s new fixation? What motivates this? What rules are instated? Why? What is the boys perception of their presence on the island? Role of the boy with the mulberry birthmark? Introduction of the beastie What might the beastie represent? (Consider themes) What is Ralph s reaction to the mention of the beastie? What about the others? Who, ironically, is the first one to disregard the rules? What is Piggy s perception of the boys behavior? What is he constantly reminding them of? Significance of fire: how it s started, what it represents feeling the beginnings of awe at he power set free below them. The knowledge and awe made them savage (44). What would have been proper behavior, according to Piggy? What does Piggy point out at the end of the chapter that causes the crowd [to be] as silent as death?
4 Chapter 3 Huts on the Beach How is Jack characterized at the beginning of this chapter? How has he character transformed thus far? What conflict is evident between Ralph and Jack? Why is there now talk as if it wasn t a good island? What has changed from the glamour of the first day? What priority becomes evident for Jack? What motivates this? What is Ralph s priority? Characterization of Simon? Relationship with littluns? Secret retreat into nature What thematic connections can be made in this chapter?
5 Chapter 8 Gift for the Darkness Ralph, Jack, & Roger have just claimed to see the beast What problem does this create (think signal fire)? Growing conflict b/tw Ralph & Jack Another vote Ralph wins again Jack becomes angry & declares, I m not going to play anymore (127). What does his use of the word play suggest/remind us of? Separation of groups What does Ralph s group do? What suggestion does Piggy make What does Jack s group do? How can Simon be described in this chapter? Describe the sow scene on p What does the diction/imagery suggest about the boys killing of the pig? SUPER IMPORTANT SCENE!

What is the gift etc
7 Chapter 9 A View to a Death Notice the weather imagery What does Simon discover when the text indicates, he crawled forward and soon he understood (146). He then goes up to the mountain to reveal the truth to the others. Imagery of Jack what is his new role? How do others behave around him? Conversation between Ralph/Jack what is Jack s response when Ralph asks about shelters from the oncoming storm? Notice the imagery & intensity of the weather during circle/chant scene Describe the significance of the scene: A thing was crawling out of the forest. It came darkly, uncertainly The beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over its face. It was crying out against the abominable noise The beast struggled forward... ( ). ANOTHER SUPER IMPORTANT SCENE! Notice the change in mood, imagery, and weather once Simon dies What happens to the parachutist in this scene? Imagery of Simon end of chapter? What does the imagery suggest about Simon/Simon s role among the boys? As an archetype, what role does Simon fulfill?
