1 HORIZONTE INSTRUCTION AND TRAINING CENTER MUSIC APPRECIATION/CHORUS OPEN DISCLOSURE DOCUMENT Teacher: Kathy Williams (801) ext. 233 Course Description: This course gives students an opportunity to explore, appreciate, and enjoy music as singers and as listeners. Music notation, musical styles, music history, music theory and musical theater will be studied. Students will learn to sing accurately by reading music, producing acceptable tones, using proper diction and responding to interpretations of music. Students will study and perform two-part, three-part and/or four-part music. Course Objectives: Identify the basic characteristics of rhythm: e.g., pulse, meter, and pattern Describe the various properties of sound: e.g., pitch, duration, and timbre Identify the basic characteristics of melody: e.g., register, contour, and point of climax Listen to various types and styles of music such as rock, folk, jazz, oratorio, electronic, mass symphonic, opera, and avant-garde Recognize that harmony consists of two or more pitches that produce tension and release, dissonance and consonance Match pitches, sing melodic intervals, harmonic intervals, harmonic intervals, and melodic lines in tune Produce a good vocal tone using proper breath support, posture and diction Sing two-part, three-part, and four-part songs Sing with expression, using proper dynamics, tempo, and style Understand the basic parts of the vocal mechanism and their functions Sing a major, minor, and chromatic scale Understand the relationship of individual voices to the entire ensemble; e.g., balance, blend, timbre
2 Produce a gradual extension of range with increasing facility and flexibility Analyze performance problems and take appropriate measures to resolve them Recognize and conduct two-beat, three-beat, and four-beat patterns Demonstrate responsibility as a musician by: a. Coming prepared to class. b. Caring for music department physical facilities and equipment. c. Reacting appropriately to various music activities Describe the different ideas and feelings that music can communicate. Course Activities: Students will participate in class discussions and work in groups and as individuals on assigned topics and projects. The will listen to many different styles of music. Students will participate in the school choir and possibly in small groups or as solo performers. They will perform for the student body and guests during the Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanza season and at our school graduation ceremony. Field trips to a variety of musical performances may be a part of this course. Students may also perform as part of a service learning experience. Criteria for Completion and Grading: Students will receive points for each assignment, quiz or test that is given and is completed. Students will also receive points each day for attendance (40%) and participation (60%). Points may be deducted for continual tardiness or disrupting class. Points may be earned for dependable promptness, good attendance, cooperation and positive participation. Students may earn extra credit by completing personal projects that have been pre-approved by the teacher. At the end of each term, the student will receive a letter grade corresponding to his/her percentage of points earned. Point percentages and corresponding letter grades will be as follows: 95%-100% A 90%-94% A-
3 86%-89% B+ 83%-85% B 80%-82% B- 76%-79% C+ 73%-75% C 70%-72% C- 60%-69% P 0%-59% No Grade HORIZONTE SCHOOL GOALS and DRSLs (direct results of student learning) are to assist our students to be: * Competent Readers: A reading component is included in all classes. * Capable Math Problem Solvers: A math problem is used as an opening activity to this class. * Effective Writers: A writing assignment is included in the daily class assignments. * Demonstrators of age appropriate school behavior Teachers are responsible for: * SEOP management * Post-testing * PBIS implementation: Establish expectations and explicitly teach expectations once a month. * Reinforce expectations through Principal s 200 Club * Correct behavioral errors Classroom Policies: Students will be expected to follow the Uniform Discipline Policy of Horizonte Instruction and Training Center (attached). Students are expected to be in class each day on time and attend the class for the entire period designated. They are also expected to be alert, participate in class activities and be prepared each day with a
4 pencil or pen. Students are expected to treat staff, other students, and school property with respect.
