1 Heritage Middle School Summer Reading Expectations Good readers must read consistently in order to promote proficient/on gradelevel reading. The students at Heritage Middle School are required to read THREE to FIVE books of their choice over the summer. The books chosen cannot be books that were previously read or that were required reading in a previous grade. For example, a seventh grade student may not read Hatchet as that was read in sixth grade. As you read your books during the summer, complete the reading response sheet attached. More forms can be found on our school website under the link Summer Reading. On August 22, 2014, your language arts teachers will collect your response forms, and if you submit five, you will earn a reward. Summer reading will count towards the student s personal reading goal as they participate in Heritage Middle Strives for 25, a program that encourages reading. Students will learn how to earn incentives for this program during the first few weeks of school. Horizon students have additional requirements that will count towards the total books read (Information can be found on the Horizon link on the HMS website). Parents/Guardians: We strongly encourage you to be involved in your child s book choices. Books vary in level and content, so please help your child make appropriate choices. Please encourage your child to choose books that are within his/her Lexile Range. The student s Lexile score can be found on your child s CRCT results. If you have questions about whether a book is in your child s range, you can consult: (go to: find a book). Target Lexiles for middle school are: 6-8 th grade You can also learn more about Lexiles by going to the HMS webpage and clicking the summer reading link. On that site is a list of fiction and nonfiction titles along with their Lexiles to help students who may be undecided on what book to read.
