1 February 2004 Library News Waitangi Day Waitangi Day commemorates the signing of a treaty at Waitangi on 6 February 1840 by a group of Maori chiefs and the British Government, represented by Lieutenant-Governor Hobson. The treaty was subsequently signed by other Maori chiefs in various locations throughout the country. The question of what obligations the Treaty of Waitangi placed on each side has been a subject of contention ever since. (The Treaty House) Waitangi Day has been commemorated since Governor-General Bledisloe gifted the treaty house and grounds to the nation in The gift and the events of 6 February 1840 were first officially commemorated there two years later. In the last 25 to 30 years the style and mood of the commemorations have been influenced by the increasingly heated debate surrounding the status of the Treaty of Waitangi in modern-day New Zealand. 2 What s in a name? From the Don Stafford Room Looking for a name for your baby? Thinking of changing your own name? Wondering what your name means? Books about first names are found upstairs in Genealogy (Lending) at As well as giving the meaning of the name books may also give the country of origin, some idea of how old a name is, famous people who have also had the name, variations and diminutives of the name and disadvantages of having that name e.g. unflattering nicknames. Make sure you look at several books because different books can give different meanings for a name (Mary is a good example). Names go in and out of fashion John and William were most popular from 1700 to 1935 before sliding down the list and Mary was top for girls from 1700 to 1900 but was out of the top 50 by the 1960s though variations such as Marie are still there. Look in the births column of the newspaper to see what is popular today. If you want to see what names were popular in Aotearoa New Zealand in a particular year then you could look at the Index to Births on microfiche. This starts in 1848 for European births and 1913 for Maori births which are in a separate sequence until Freda LIBRARY CLOSURE FOR FEBRUARY Waitangi Day Friday 6th February (Includes the MOBILE LIBRARY) Page 2

6 FIE The Favourite: Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough By Ophelia Field. This is a substantial biography published in 2002 and perhaps surprisingly in view of its complexity is the first book by this author. Much has been written about the first Duchess of Marlborough, the founder of several dynasties including the Spencer-Churchills both before and after her death. She is of course an ancestor of the late Diana, Princess of Wales. The bibliography for this work shows evidence of painstaking research drawing on many manuscript, primary and secondary sources in the attempt to produce an accurate and fair picture of the subject, living as she did in an eventful period in British history. Lady Sarah was an intimate friend of Queen Anne through whom she hoped to influence situations to her own advantage. However this friendship soured over time leading to spectacular arguments at Court. Her fiery temper was also much remarked on during the building of Blenheim Palace, the gift of a grateful nation to her husband, John Churchill for his contribution as an able military leader in the European theatre of war. She also oversaw the building of Marlborough House in London. This is not an easy read but is a most rewarding and enlightening one rich with historical detail. There are also some colour illustrations. (Bev Emmerson - Staff Member) Postcards from Wits End By Sarah Harvey This tale of endings and beginnings for three women, is one of the best novels I have read in some while. While the story starts off a little slowly, it suddenly starts flowing and becomes the book that you can t put down. Set in beautiful Cornwall, you can almost feel the wildness and beauty of that lovely land. The three main characters are well supported by great story lines and other strong characters. A well written book that makes the reader stop and think about life many times through the novel. Page 6
