2 BACKGROUND BUILDING: 1. Today s WARM-UP is two sentences to help direct students write some examples of parenthetical citations in MLA format. 2. Why is it important to follow MLA style? What issues could come up if not everyone uses the same style? MLA Parenthetical Citations: 1. Sometimes called In-Text citations. 2. Parenthetical means to interrupt the sentence or come inside the sentence. 3. There are strict rules for formatting and punctuation. Why do you think rules are important? TEACHER GUIDING: Write out the rules on your worksheet as the teacher explains them. 1. Use a lead-in with a phrase or restatement verb. Don t just start off the quote or paraphrase: Feys states... According to the author Include the author s name or authors names and the page number. 3. Use direct quotes or a paraphrase/summary. 4. Use quotation marks for direct quotes. Do not use them on paraphrases/summaries. 5. Do not put a comma or period before the ( ) in the citation. Periods come after the ( ) in the whole sentence.

3 6. Use numbers (digits) only for page numbers ( no page or p.). 7. If the author s name or authors names are inside the ( ), do not use a comma to separate the page number. 8. Do not put a comma or period before the end ( ). EXAMPLES Where is the author s name? Where is the final period to end the sentence?
