1 New members A big welcome to our new members: Kaye Neely... Kerikeri Ellie Schoffelneer... Kerikeri Elizabeth Hindmarsh.. Auckland Amber Rhodes... Auckland Selene Simcox... Auckland Brooks Belford... Havelock North Gill de la Perrelle... Havelock North Kerry Ann Lee... Wellington Wendy Edens... Nelson Andrea Shearer... Dunedin We now have 259 members. Editor s farewell Since taking on the role of Editor, I had the pleasure of dealing with many interesting and knowledgeable people. Articles, opinions and all manner of resources have come my way, and it was always nice to be one of the first to view them. At times it was even difficult to decide what should fit into an upcoming issue and what to hold for the next one. After nearly seven years (half my total time as an ABC member), I have decided it is time to hand over the reins. New work commitments and other projects mean that I will not be able to apply the same focus to the newsletter as I have in the past. This issue is the first to be produced by our new Editor, Terrie Reddish. I am very pleased to know that the newsletter is in such good hands and that members will continue to enjoy a quality publication under her Editorship. Please make sure you support Terrie by sending in any interesting articles, opinions, snippets, reports Association of Book Crafts (NZ) Inc Cl- 4 Alnack Place, Torbay North Shore City 0630, New Zealand etc. It always makes things that little bit easier for an editor, and ensures members have a wide range of material to read in the newsletter. It must also be mentioned that without the support of the ABC committee, and in particular John Sansom, the newsletter would not be the success it is today. John s legendary organisational powers must be mentioned, and in his capacity as Resource Manager, he makes the life of an editor so much easier. All the best for the Christmas period and to Terrie for her new role. Jonathan Bennett Association of Book Crafts (New Zealand) Incorporated Founder and life member: John Sansom Merry Christmas from the President As the year draws to a close it occurs to me that there have been a few significant endings and beginnings for the ABC during Roger Boud, having completed 3 years as president, stepped down at this years AGM. Thank you Roger for the hard work and commitment you put into this role. I look forward to working with you in the future as you continue your involvement as vice president. Jonathan Bennett, having been newsletter editor for the last 7 years, has decided to pass this important job on. He has taken up an employment opportunity that means less spare time for leisure activities. Jonathan has served us well as editor and has done a fantastic job ensuring continuity and reliability as well as producing an interesting and informative publication. Thank you and good luck with your new position I'm imagining you will still manage to find some time to execute the occasional fine binding. It is with appreciation that I welcome our new editor Terrie Reddish, who has willingly and with enthusiasm volunteered for the job. It is good to have you on board. I have sensed quite a buzz within the ABC network since joining the committee maybe it has always existed but I just didn't notice? It seems that over the past year or so new chapters have formed, old chapters have been re-activated, members have returned from overseas and there has been an abundance of locally run workshops / talks. Underpinning all this, there is the constant support and commitment of hard working volunteers that keep the association alive. Being new to the role of president I have been wondering what ABC members would like from their association. Maybe it serves you exactly as you would like it. Maybe you have some new ideas. I am interested in hearing from you about what you November-December 2008 Newsletter ABC publishes this newsletter every two months to inform and communicate with Association members. When I was very young Christmas seemed to arrive at snail's pace each year. Now it seems to do the rounds, if not at the speed of light, certainly in a jet powered sleigh. I do hope you all have a very peaceful and happy Christmas and hope that 2009 will bring at least one of your dreams to fruition. Best regards David Ashman, President Auckland Wayzgoose The annual gathering of the Auckland Chapter of the Association of Book Crafts and the Association of Handcraft Printers will take place on Sunday 23 November from 11 am until 3.30 pm at Ferndale House, 830 New North Rd, Mt. Wet books - the air dry method This procedure is appropriate for handling one or two wet books. See the Dartmouth College Library Disaster Manual for handling of wet materials on a large scale. Ideally, wet books should be freeze dried, then treated. This procedure outlines what to do when the book is not totally soaked and/or freezing is not practical. Wet books that dry closed, or are not treated within six hours of becoming wet, will almost always need to be discarded. The blocking agent used in processing paper acts as an adhesive when wet. The book will probably dry as a solid block. Suggested materials and equipment: Book press Press boards Fan Paper towels Blotter paper Iron Procedure: Using blotter paper or paper towels, blot as much water from the book as possible. Be careful not to rub either the cover or the wet pages. Stand the book on its tail and fan open the pages. lf possible, dry the book in this position in the sunlight or with the use of a fan. Alternatively, dry the book away from a direct heat source, but in a warm dry area. The more quickly the book dries the less cockling (rippling) will occur. If after drying the cover is warped, place the book between two press boards and place in a book press for several days. In all likelihood a wet book that has been air dried will never look as good as it once did. The above two articles are reprinted courtesy of the Dartmouth Library. Website Morocco Bound Vol 29 No.2 May This is web site of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild who have since 1983 worked to support the development of the book arts including bookbinding, artists' books, papermaking, calligraphy, letterpress printing & typography, wood engraving, paper decorating, restoration, and conservation. 11 ABC Newsletter 6 November December 2008 Planning a book repair Keeping documentation when undertaking repairs is important. Like the Editor, most of the readers of this article are amateurs, but that doesn t mean we shouldn t be professional in our approach. (The editor apologises in advance for the short lecture). Many a book owner is surprised to find how much it is likely to cost for a book repair. They envisage the waving of a magic glue brush and the uttering of a spell is sufficient to repair a treasured family possession. We all know how many family bibles are lurking out there; doomed by faulty construction from the moment they left the bookshop and less than thoughtful handling by their owners. Using a work sheet to record findings when the book is given a preliminary examination can be revealing for a book owner and helpful for the binder. After completing a recent complicated repair I wonder why I was not using this idea years ago. For one thing, I d have a record of the books that have passed through my hands and the owners would have a record of the work done to repair their books. Digital cameras allow you to make photographs of before and after appearances, showing details of needed repairs to spine and sections, which could also be provided to the owner after the repairs are complete. I prepared a draft form, which I submit, for members to try. If you set up your own version, using the table feature in a word processor, or a spreadsheet program, any additions and variations are easy to do. Save the final version as a template and it can be used as often as you wish, and altered at any time. Some people may wish to add details about hours, hourly costs and materials used, in which case it may be better to print the table in landscape mode. A spreadsheet would allow automatic totalling of costs. The other advantage is that it helps to jog the memory as the repairs are made, especially relocating loose pages and plates. An alternative is a basic sketch of a standard book, which could be annotated. Adrienne Allen Morocco Bound Vol.29 No.1 March 2008 Tip If you have a large area of cloth, paper or board to cover with PVA or are working on a number of books, rather than using a brush use a decorator s tray and one of the mini rollers used for gloss paint. It is far less messy, much faster and gives a good, thin, even coat of adhesive.

Workshops: new members please note that our Secretary, Lynne Melton, also acts as workshop coordinator. If you wish to learn more about a particular aspect of bookbinding, contact Lynne to register your interests and give her an idea of your needs. Contact Lynne on or lmcmelton@xtra.co.nz Christchurch Chapter news Our enthusiastic group continues to meet at the Avice Hill Centre every month. We had a great response to a 2 day workshop on boxes with Ann Bell, with all who attended having a productive and thoroughly enjoyable weekend. The following month Sandy showed us how to construct a different box and the October meeting was an opportunity to show off the resulting masterpieces, plus a general show and tell. These meetings are always popular with lots of swapping of ideas and tips. Our last meeting for the year will be on Sunday 23 November at Avice Hill Centre, Memorial Ave at 10 am. The change of day is because we are to have the pleasure of the company of Peter Goodwin who stars in a series of DVDs on bookbinding. These DVDs are available both from the ABC library and also from the Christchurch Library. Peter will demonstrate one of his many repair techniques, and invites questions on all aspects of book construction and repair. This not-to-be-missed opportunity will be followed by our usual end of year pot luck lunch. Ideas for next year's meetings are being sorted out, with lots of interesting meetings/workshops planned. Liz Davison Also, through the Waikato University, ABC representative Lynn Taylor is teaching 'Edge to Edge" printmaking in Tauranga January Edge to Edge Printmaking refers to printing to the edges of paper and to the opportunity to identify and push personal boundaries of one s conception of printmaking. This course aims to focus on exploring and interpreting print making process in pluralistic ways that develop participant s own practice. Participants will create a collection of sample works through layered and combination printing processes, paper manipulation and through critically responding to the evolving nature of the results. It is envisaged that the collection is a process of unleashing the potential of existing and new etched print matrixes that can act as a springboard for future printmaking projects. The course format encourages the opportunity to explore previous and possibly unresolved print matrixes alongside creating new matrixes. New plates will be limited to a layered aquatint plate suitable for off set printing and a photo-polymer plate. (However dry point plates into Mylar and aluminium can also be produced.) The primary focus is on expanding ways of printing and creating risk and freedom in your approach. This course may interest ABC members with an interest in printmaking and illustration. It is generally easier to tie on a new length than deal with the inevitable knots and tables that result from a single long piece. 10 ABC Newsletter 6 November December ABC Newsletter 6 November December 2008

4 Springback ledger demonstration with Peter Goodwin Sunday 14th of September was a lovely sunny day, with six keen ABC members assembled in the MOTAT bindery for Peter Goodwin s demonstration on making a springback ledger. The springback ledger is a traditional trade stationery binding, constructed with a special springback hollow that grips the back of the book block like a spring, and is levered off as the book opens, enabling the book to lay flat when opened without stressing the spine. This makes it an excellent choice for written entries spanning the folio width, such as account ledgers, guest books and such like. This book was once a common occurrence for commercial bookbinders to produce. Boots the Chemist, where Peter apprenticed (in 1945ish) would make 300 at a time. (Boots employed 100 tradesmen and four apprentices.) Now, however, the skills needed to produce such a book are fast becoming lost, so it was an utter treat to be able to attend Peter s demonstration. He managed to cover made endpaper construction, making the springback and the tabs, edge sprinkling, rounding, bevelling and back trimming the boards and half bound binding interspersing his demonstration with snippets of his experiences as an apprentice making these books in a commercial capacity. We had all our questions answered in a friendly and cheerful manner. We were all very fortunate for such an experience, to watch and learn from a true master, and most of us seized the opportunity kindly offered by Peter to also purchase his DVD on the subject (filmed by Janette Heffernan) as part of the workshop. From us all, thanks Peter. Megan Joe Horton If you wish to buy your own copy of Peter s DVDs, see: Peter has 5 titles to choose from: 1. The Full Bound Leather Book 2. Restoring the Family Bible 3. The Account Book/springback ledger 4. The 1819 Atlas/half bound leather 5. The 'Humble' Paperback Notes for ABC by Arthur W. Johnson There are a limited number of sewn but unbound copies of this book which consists of all the articles written by our late Founder for our newsletters.it is printed on high quality cream paper by the Oxford Press, measures 250 x 190 x 10mm and has 142 pages. Members who had ordered copies have all been sent their copy with the exception of a number of people who have not responded. Contact John Sansom, Resource Manager, to secure one of the remaining copies at $37 plus postage, on a first come, first served basis. Tips and tricks Some library stamps can be removed by sanding lightly with very fine abrasive paper (the white type). A successful result will be dependent of the thickness of the paper being treated, the texture of the outside surface of the paper and whether the ink has penetrated into the paper. In some cases the ink just lies on the surface and is easily removed. A flexible knife, such as a putty spatula, can be a useful alternative to a rigid blade when lifting a leather spine off a book being rebacked. When laying down new paper over a repair, don t use a freshly cut edge. A more sympathetic, less obtrusive join can be obtained by tearing the paper on a straight edge after scoring the paper. Wood paste or similar material can be used to build up damaged board corner prior to recovering. If repairing an old book with damaged marbled end papers, it is possible to scan the pattern and copy it on to suitable paper. The beauty of doing this is that you can enhance colours or even change them. Another possibility it to scan autumn leaves, or maidenhair fern, on to lightly textured or coloured paper. Dos-a-dos bindings Dos-a-dos ( back-to-back in French) bindings have a structure in which two separate books are bound together so that the fore edge of one is adjacent to the spine of the other. They are separated by, and conjoined with, a single board at the back of each book. The spine of one book and the fore edge of the other will show when the binding is shelved. When shelved, the spine of the book to the right faces outward, while the spine of the book to the left faces the back of the shelf; the text of both works runs head-to-tail. This type of binding is sometimes confused with the tetebeche ( head-to-toe in French) style. These also have two texts bound together (often two volumes of the same work), but each text is placed so that it is turned 180Ī relative its neighbour. Thus, the text of one runs head to tail while the other runs tail to head, and the last page of each work will be adjacent to each other (allowing for endpapers of course). When a reader reaches the end of the text of one of the works, the next page is the (upside down) final page of the other work. The binding has two front covers, and the single spine will probably show (for example) that the contents are volumes 1 and 2. The dos-a-dos format dates back at least to the 16th century, though they were most common in England in the first half of the 17th century. Two books frequently bound in this form were the New Testament and Psalter, presumably because both were needed during church services. Regardless of content, the outer boards of dos-a-dos bindings were usually embroidered, or covered with leather and then finished with gold. The middle shared board of course has no fore edge, and when preparing the book for binding, a way has to be found to attach a long edge of the single shared board to each text block. Both cased and laced on (cords or tapes) styles would be suitable. It is usual to have each side of the shared board faced with a pastedown endpaper, i.e. each side of the board is an inside, rather than an outside. There is nothing to prevent (except of course the binder s skill and patience) the binding of multiple volumes in this style. John Turner Morocco Bound Vol 29 No. 3 August 2008 The NSW Guild of Craft Bookbinders Inc, was formed in It consists of people of various occupations and ages who have a common interest in books, book crafts and bookbinding. 5 Paste papers for beginners Materials and equipment: Paste, powder colours or tube colours (poster, water colour or acrylic) Bowl of water and sponge Flannelette cloth to strain paste Brushes for each colour Paper to be decorated Glass jars for paste colours Clean work surface Drying area or drying rack. The paste Clear paste = 3 tablespoons of laundry starch to 1 litre of boiling water Medium paste = 5 tablespoons of laundry starch to 1 litre of boiling water Thick paste = 7 tablespoons of laundry starch to 1 litre of boiling water. Place the starch lumps in a saucepan and cover with water, then stir until the mixture is like thin cream. Pour in the boiling water and stir energetically with a wooden spoon or whisk. The sticky paste is allowed to cool and then strained through a tammy cloth to eliminate lumps and impurities. Colours A sheet of paper is spread out on the work surface and moistened with a damp sponge so that the paper sticks to the surface without folds and lies flat. The coloured paste is brushed onto the paper with a regular stroke, and then decorative motifs are traced into it. You can use the brush, either end, fingers or a paper spill. Roll a triangle of paper to make the spill. The paste may be stamped with small objects or rubber stamps, a piece of sponge or the edge of a piece of linoleum or cardboard. Once the design is finished, spread the paper to dry on a sheet of newsprint. Using the same method, you can make multicoloured papers. Use two pots of colour, for example blue and grey. Make wide grey stripes first with the brush and then cover the spaces between with blue. You can use your fingers to vary the design. As you proceed the colours mix at their borders, avoiding strong contrasts. These papers are useful for covering portfolios. Traditionally, paste paper to cover boxes was decorated with lines of colour made with the edge of a lathe. A small ruler would be suitable. The size of the motifs should match the purpose. The design should not be too bright or complex. The most useful colours are earth colours e.g. ochre, burnt sienna, because they do not fade. They are easily obtained in powder form. You can also use other water soluble colours, but try to use only those that do not fade. (Chinese or Indian ink makes good greys.) Colours may be altered by mixing in white to lighten and black or brown to darken. The brush is the usual paste brush. The paper This ought not to be too light or too rigid. The best is Ingres (Canson for example) paper in light tones, which gives excellent results. Also very good are smooth white papers of gsm (Cartridge). Kraft or brown paper is less supple (and not usually acid free). The best working surface is a zinc plate 50 x 70 cm and about 0.75mm thick, or a large rectangular tray or dish with sides about 2 cm high. Lacking these, work on a stack of newspapers or a flat table (covered with a plastic sheet; other modern substitutes would be Formica coated board or perspex). Beginners should be happy to start with simple techniques that still allow free expression. Decorating the papers In a jar place a few drops of water, adds some colour, powder or tube, and mix with the brush. When the colour is well mixed, add enough paste to be evenly coloured to the shade required and mix again thoroughly. (Useful objects for designs include graining combs, textured plastic, hair combs, and old credit cards cut into designs on one edge) Graining Comb From Folded paper and Cardboard Work p.18. 6 Boundless Books Exhibition of Elizabeth Steiner Books at Lopdell House Gallery A collection of beautiful books made by Elizabeth over the last 17 years has been on exhibition at Lopdell House Gallery in Titirangi. A good crowd attended her curators talk on Friday 8th August. We got the opportunity to hear Elizabeth talk about and show the books in the exhibition. My particular favourite the Jacobs ladder style book Watermarks. Elements of the Book - Workshops David Ashman The Herlihy Bible ABC Auckland Branch Meeting Presentation 17 August 2008 One of the most dramatic events of the 2004 Manawatū floods took place on 16 February when a house owned by brothers Bill and Pat Herlihy was washed into the Kiwitea Stream. Five days later, the Herlihy s leather-bound family bible was found resting against a fence in a flooded paddock, 14 kilometres downstream. David s presentation was about the painstaking work that was done at Triptych Conservation Services a firm David had established in 2001 to clean and repair the bible. The talk followed on nicely from the previous branch meeting talk by Paul Taylor who had covered the macro level of a disaster involving book collections that had resulted from floods in Prague in David s talk focused at the micro level of flood damage on a single book. The well illustrated presentation covered the work done to repair the bible taking a conservators approach to restoration. This involves minimal intervention and use of appropriate materials and methods that aim to be reversible rather than attempting to return the bible to its original state and appearance. Roger Boud s Slip Case Workshop A slipcase is a protective and often decorative box that holds a book or set of books. Roger Boud assisted by Lynne Melton lead a slip case workshop at MOTAT on 6 September The construction technique shown was based on one from Aldren Watson s book Hand Bookbinding, with some changes. The size calculations page for cutting and folding was an invaluable addition in the comprehensive notes that were provided. Spiral Path Training Courses for 2009 All courses will be taught by Paul Taylor, a qualified and accredited book and paper conservator and bookbinder with over 24 years experience both in the UK and NZ. Until recently, he was Preservation Manager for Auckland City Council Libraries and now is a freelance conservator and design binder. All courses will be held in the Spiral Path studio at the Lake House Arts Centre, Takapuna, Auckland and people will have the opportunity to have a tour and see examples of bookbinding, conservation and design binding. Book Binding & Book Restoration Technology tip To coincide with the Boundless Books exhibition Lopdell House Gallery has held a series of Saturday studio workshops in August covering four different elements of book production papermaking, printing, construction and bookbinding. Beth Serjeant took us through papermaking and printing and Elizabeth Steiner the book construction and binding workshops. Dale Cormack-Pearson Swing Panel Card and Accordion Book This ABC Workshop at MOTAT on 17 August started with Dale giving us each a red booklet with our name on the cover in gold calligraphy. Inside were full instructions and a little pocket on the first page containing a miniature sample which was very well received. Participants at the Slipcase workshop Reviews by Sarah Padey A practical one day course where you will learn how to create a custom made archival storage box for a book using acid free corrugated board. Attendees will also be introduced to some simple construction methods for archival enclosures using acid free card and paper as well as gaining general information about preservation storage requirements for book and paper items. Leather Onlays and Inlays One day course on 13 September (10am - 4pm) A practical one day course where you will have the opportunity to prepare and experiment with various types of bookbinding leathers to produce decorative ClickBook, is a software programme that can be used for printing books. It will also print customised day planner pages, booklets, bulletins, brochures, greeting cards, posters, business cards, flipbooks, catalogues, banners, microfiche, CD covers and more, from Internet, Windows, or CD-Rom files. ClickBook, will scale and rotate digital photos, e- mails, documents, favourite on-line content, or other critical information into convenient layouts that are better than the normal duplex function. ClickBook works much like a print driver. ClickBook intercepts pages going to laser or inkjet printers and automatically rotates, reduces and realigns pages into the correct order to create double-sided sideby-side folded booklets.
