4 Prompts to Choose From Choose ONE (1) of the following prompts for your ENTIRE research paper. You may focus on Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Frankenstein OR Les Misérables. Choose ONLY ONE prompt! As a mandatory check point, you will be required to submit selected prompt and a brief outline of what you will research. Prompts for Frankenstein 1) Mary Shelley s Frankenstein stands as a monument to the Romantic Movement. What elements of romanticism can be seen throughout the novel? Think about: What elements of Romanticism can be seen throughout the novel? What elements are the strongest? How does Shelley use the struggles of each character to express her romantic view points? 2) Through the story of Frankenstein, how does Mary Shelley refute the ideals of Romanticism if practiced in the extreme? 3) Define and discuss the Romantic s ideas of transcendence as a theme in Frankenstein, and explain its significance. 4) Define and discuss the Romantic s ideas of nature as a theme in Frankenstein, and explain its significance. (This refers to nature at large, not an individual s nature.) 5) Mary Shelley s novel was originally titled: Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus. Discuss the significance of the connections between Victor and Prometheus and how the shared characteristics of both embody ideals of Romanticism. 6) Mary Shelley incorporates Romantic and gothic themes within her novel Frankenstein which helped to birth these themes in following genres and art forms. Prove how these Romantic and/or gothic themes from Frankenstein influence subsequent Western culture literature and art. 7) Many authors are known to incorporate some elements of their personal lives or experiences in their writing. Prove how Mary Shelley uses elements of her own autobiography and/or experiences into her novel, Frankenstein. Prove how these elements assist the connection to the Romantic movement or the gothic establishment. 8) Knowing that Mary Shelley was a romantic, discuss how her incorporation of Milton s Paradise Lost (a Renaissance writing), shows a romantic interpretation of the story. Prompts for Rime of the Ancient Mariner 1) Which romantic tenants are the focus of Coleridge's philosophy and writings? Why are these so vital to Coleridge? And, how are they displayed in "Rime of the Ancient Mariner"? 2) Neoclassicism is rooted in realism and public life. Coleridge uses supernatural elements in "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" that do not fit the concerns of the neoclassical writers. Prove how the use of these supernatural elements in the poem are a direct response against the norms of neoclassicism. 4
5 Prompts for Rime of the Ancient Mariner (continued) 3) Coleridge incorporates Romantic and supernatural elements within his poem "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" which helped pave the way for future writers. Prove how these Romantic and/or supernatural elements from the poem influence subsequent future writers. Prompts for Les Miserables 1) Les Misérables presents a thesis of sorts on the penal justice system and its effects on society and/or individuals. What is that thesis? Find research that comments on the effectiveness of this system in early to mid 19th century France. Incorporate Romantic versus Neoclassical views of human nature into your discussion as well as comments made by Hugo and his characters regarding justice and France s penal system of that time. 2) A major theme of Les Misérables and other literature is that of redemption. A discussion of this topic requires research into the differences between Romantic and Neoclassical views of human nature. Can Valjean find redemption? Javert? Thenardier? What does it mean to be redeemed according to Romantic ideals? According to this novel? 3) Since an author's work is undoubtedly influenced by his views on life, it is reasonable to conclude that Les Misérables would have at least some Romantic qualities. Use INDEPENDENT RESEARCH and the novel to explain how well Les Misérables, as a whole, fits the scope of a Romantic novel. (Think about the various characters and the era in French history.) 4) Les Misérables exposes ideas about poverty: the poverty of individuals and the poverty of society. Explore some aspect(s) of this issue in light of Romantic ideals. Explore the differences between examining poverty through a romantic lens and a neoclassical lens. Consider researching neoclassical writers and their essays on this topic and contrast them with Hugo s perspectives as seen through his characters. 5) Family life in 19th century France held certain characteristics for gender and social issues. Through research, prove the trends of this time based on gender and family life. How, then, would a feminist critique the portrayal of Fantine, Cosette, Eponine, and Madame Thenardier based on this research? 6) Using research of the life of children in 19th century France, discuss Hugo's accuracy in depicting the life of these children (both rich and poor). Consider the youthful characters in the story such as Cosette, Eponine, Marius, and Gavroche but also the broad picture of children and families shown in the society. 7) Many historical events occurred from in France including war, social injustice, political unrest, etc. Through research of these historical events, prove how well the changes and events in the actual French history are depicted in Les Miserables. 5
