4 The thesis, as presented in the thesis statement, does not suggest the main idea it is the main idea. Remember, too, that a thesis statement will always be a complete sentence; there s no other way to make a statement other than to express it in a complete thought. Remember The thesis MUST include: An arguable topic Your opinion Three supporting details The first step is to write and submit a preliminary thesis. Please remember that you may have to modify your thesis depending on the research/evidence you find to support your opinion. Remember to: take on a stance on the subject upon which reasonable people could disagree deal with an aspect of the subject that can be adequately treated given the nature of the assignment express one main idea with three supporting details assert your conclusions about the subject You must be flexible at this point. As of right now, your thesis is a work in progress. YOU MUST CREATE YOUR PRELIMINARY THESIS AND AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY BEFORE YOUR ANNOTATED OUTLINE The preliminary thesis will CLEARLY break down your thesis statement into its basic argument and three supporting details. The annotated bibliography will include the necessary bibliographic information for each piece of research followed by a brief summary of the evidence. 3

The preliminary thesis statement is that sentence or two in your text that contains the focus of your essay and tells your reader what the essay is going to be about. This should be a position about the topic that you can argue. Preliminary Thesis: Traditional arts and crafts like Appalachian basket weaving are important skills worth preserving for future generations. SD1: Traditional basket weaving skills are disappearing in the United States. SD2: Arts programs are being cut in schools throughout the mountain region. SD3: Self-esteem is promoted through the acquisition of delicate artistic skills. Annotated Bibliography The three supporting details (SD) are the points you will use to prove the argument in your thesis. This evidence comes from your research. Giles, Heidi. 6 WHAT IS? 1. copying word for word without quotation marks or acknowledging the author or the source. 2. using some key words or phrases without quotation marks or acknowledging the author of the source. 3. paraphrasing and giving no author or source credit. Plagiarism (n.): The presentation of another writer s ideas or words as if they were your own, without acknowledging the source. To avoid plagiarism, you should: Cite not only direct quotes but also ideas that you borrow from your sources. Basically, if you did not think of it yourself and it came from one of your sources, you must document it. Documenting means: -using parenthetical documentation within your paper (see pages 9 & 10) -and listing sources (see page 15) in a list of works cited to give credit to those from whom you borrowed information. Common knowledge does not need to be documented. Material is common knowledge if: -Reliable authors refer to it without citing its source -If most people knowledgeable in the field accept it as fact -If few experts would dispute it -And, if it is reported in most introductory textbooks or basic reference books on the subject If you are ever uncertain, ask! If you are still not sure, check out these websites on plagiarism: Plagiarism will result in a 0 for the paper, which could endanger your passing English class. I would prefer even to fail with honor than win by cheating. 5 Sophocles

7 AVOID accusations of plagiarism. Extensive Paraphrasing o Paraphrasing is one way to discuss or analyze another person s ideas without directly quoting them. Extensive paraphrasing, however, can lead to unintentional plagiarism. According to The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, paraphrasing, or rewording someone else s writing, can be a form of plagiarism. When you condense a writer s argument into just a few sentences, for example, you may not be directly quoting, but you must still acknowledge the source of the argument. For that reason, paraphrasing large amounts of information is scarcely different from extensive quoting and must be properly cited as such. In-text Citations o Using quotation marks in your paper is not enough by itself you must also tell the reader exactly where the information came from. In-text citations are crucial for avoiding plagiarism. Doing so tells the readers who wrote the material and where they may find the information for themselves. In Modern Language Association of America (MLA) style, for example, you use a parenthetical citation at the end of a sentence to denote the origin of the quote. You may also make direct reference to an author in the text, acknowledging the author as your source of information. When you don t utilize in-text citations, your quotations may be considered plagiarism. Excessive Quoting o If you rely too much on another author s argument, you may commit plagiarism by over-quoting. While your teacher may simply consider this sub-par writing, he may also consider it plagiarism if you neglect to provide a sufficient amount of analysis or original argument. For example, the Purdue Online Writing Lab recommends quoting as little material as you need. Only use direct quotations when the author has phrased something better than you can or when paraphrasing would weaken the argument. Avoid block quotations, which convey a lot of information but also indicate large gaps in original writing or research. Works Cited o o Citing your quoted material in the text is not enough to avoid charges of plagiarism you must also cite your sources at the end of the paper. In MLA style, this comes in the form of a Works Cited page, in which you list every source that you used throughout the paper. A works-cited citation includes the author, title, place of publication, date of publication and the pages you used. Presenting such a citation acknowledges the sources for even your longest quotes. 6

8 :Write it in Your Own Words A summary is NOT an exact copy of the original. Simply changing a few words here and there is NOT acceptable. Rearranging the original sentence order of another author s work is considered plagiarism. A summary is your own rendition of essential information and ideas expressed by someone else, presented in a new form. one legitimate way (when accompanied by accurate documentation) to borrow from a source. Summarizing is a valuable skill because it is better than quoting information from an undistinguished passage. it helps you control the temptation to quote too much. the mental process required for successful paraphrasing helps you to grasp the full meaning of the original. Steps to Effective Summarizing YOU WILL BE SUBMITTING EVIDENCE OF THIS 1. Reread the original passage until you understand its full meaning. 2. Set the original aside, and write your summary on the annotated outline. 3. Check your rendition with the original to make sure that your version accurately expresses all the essential information in a new form. 4. Use quotation marks to identify any unique term or phraseology you have borrowed exactly from the source. 5. Record the source (including the page) on the annotated outline so that you can credit it easily if you decide to incorporate the material into your paper. 6. On the original source document, highlight the information you paraphrased. Use the appropriate color to distinguish if this information will be used to expand SD#1 (yellow), SD#2 (blue), or SD#3 (pink). 7. Label the highlighted information on the source document with the SD# and the correlating number on the annotated outline. For example: Some examples to compare: The original passage: Students frequently overuse direct quotation in taking notes, and as a result they overuse quotations in the final [research] paper. Probably only about 10% of your final manuscript should appear as directly quoted matter. Therefore, you should strive to limit the amount of exact transcribing of source materials while taking notes. Lester, James D. Writing Research Papers. 2 nd ed. (1976): A legitimate paraphrase: In research papers students often quote excessively, failing to keep quoted material down to a desirable level. Since the problem usually originates during note taking, it is essential to minimize the material recorded verbatim (Lester 46-47). An acceptable summary: Students should take just a few notes in direct quotation from sources to help minimize the amount of quoted material in a research paper (Lester 46-47). A plagiarized version: Students often use too many direct quotations when they take notes, resulting in too many of them in the final research paper. In fact, probably only about 10% of the final copy should consist of directly quoted material. So it is important to limit the amount of source material copied while taking notes. 7

9 How to 1. Never quote unless the meaning would be lost in the summary. 2. Always introduce your quote or summary. Ex: John Smith, world-renowned scholar on Mayan culture, elaborates on the influence the ancient civilization has had on today s world, whatever quote here 3. The quote should support ideas. 4. The quote should flow smoothly into the paper. Ex: Do not say: The following quote is about.or on page 32 in the poem the author means 5. Keep a quote correct. 6. If a quote is 4 lines or less: a. integrate it into the paper ex: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, wrote Charles Dickens of the eighteenth century. b. place the period after the citation ex: your quote goes here (Shaw 32). 7. If a quote is longer than four lines: a. isolate the quote from the text b. introduce the quote with a colon: c. use no quotation marks around it d. place the period at the end of the quotation; hit the space bar twice and write the citation e. double space the text of the quote just like the rest of the paper f. tab twice from the left margin; the right margin remains one inch ex: At the conclusion of Lord of the Flies, Ralph and the other boys realize the horror of their actions: 8. Never use back to back quotes. CITING INSIDE THE PAPER: Why you document (CITE): 1. to alert readers to the source of our information 2. to give credit to the writers from whom you have borrowed words OR IDEAS. When you document (CITE): 1. when you use a direct quote from an outside source or reference. 2. when you borrow any ideas from a source: a. paraphrase b. sentences c. summaries of paragraphs or chapters d. statistics or little known facts e. tables, graphs, or diagrams Guidelines for Giving Credit Within the Research Paper 8

10 (HERE S HOW YOU CITE INFORMATION INSIDE THE PAPER): The period should always go after the citation and outside the close parentheses. 1. Print Sources with One Author (Last name Page #). Example: (Jones 64). 2. Print Sources by Authors with the Same Last Name (First Name Last Name Page #) Example: (Mary Smith 21). 3. Print Sources with More than One Author (Last Name and Last Name Page #). Example: (Rust and Sharer 102). 4. Print Sources with No Author Given ( Article Title Page #). Example: ( New Information 34). 5. One-Page Print Source (Last Name) or ( Title ) if no author s name is given. Example: (Bower). 6. More than One Print Source by the Same Author (Last Name, Title Page #). Example: (Nissen, New Discoveries 45). 7. Author s Name Given in a Paragraph (Page #). Example: (76). 8. Internet Source ( Title Name Page #). Example: ( American Heart Association 4). 9. Interview Source (Last Name of Person Interviewed NP [no page #]). Example: (Dagenhart NP). Make sure that your parenthetical documentation DOES NOT LOOK LIKE ANY OF THESE THESE ARE INCORRECT!!! (Stipe #456) (Jones, 54) (Osborne 450.) (Armstrong pg.90) A paper with no parenthetical documentation counts as PLAGIARIZED, whether you meant it that way or not! IF YOU ARE NOT SURE WHETHER TO CITE A SOURCE OR NOT, JUST DO IT!!!! It is better to be safe than sorry! NEXT YOU WILL CREATE YOUR ANNOTATED OUTLINE. Please use the following exemplar for formatting guidelines: 9

11 The information in each of your five summaries must focus on proving your SD. These summaries come directly from your research. Annotated Outline: SD #1 Preliminary Thesis: Basket weaving, a traditional craft of the Appalachian region, is an important skill worth preserving and handing on to students in local schools. Preliminary Supporting Details Statement: This can be proven when examining how Student 1 traditional basket weaving skills are an important part of our national cultural heritage, how arts programs are being cut in the mountain region, and how students self-esteem is promoted through the acquisition of delicate crafting skills. SD#1: Traditional basket weaving skills are an important part of our cultural heritage. 1. A museum in West Virginia has collected baskets from artists throughout the Appalachian region. While these traditional pieces were often woven for utilitarian uses by common individuals, the museum is displaying the work with the appropriate respect and veneration due fine artists (Giles 26). 2. As many rural people moved to the cities, the transmission of traditional arts and crafts skills began to disappear; however, the hills of Tennessee have been the scene of a vibrant rebirth of traditional crafting. More than 50 festivals occur during the spring and summer, with thousands of artists represented (Harwig 12). 3. The arts and crafts of the hill communities are a precious resource for our nation. As recently as a decade ago, younger generations of Appalachians shied away from learning the arts and crafts skills of their ancestors. Plagiarism will lead to a grade of 0 on your research paper, so you need to be very careful here.

12 You will need FIVE numbered statements of fact, quotes, statistics, and general data about your subject for each supporting detail. For SD#1 you ll have items numbered 1-5; for SD#2 6-10; for SD# You ll follow each numbered entry with an MLA parenthetical citation. IMPORTANT: You must also include the printout of each of the source materials with the information you are using highlighted. Please make sure you label each piece of highlighted text in your source material with the SD# and the number of the entry in your annotated outline. ****Highlight evidence for SD#1 in YELLOW, SD#2 in BLUE, and SD#3 in PINK**** DON T TURN IN YOUR ANNOTATED OUTLINE YET! CHECK IT FIRST!!! Basic Requirements: Is the outline typed, and in an appropriate font/size and format? Is the outline double-spaced? Did you include the proper heading? Do the numbers on the photocopied sources match the correct paraphrased source #s 1-5, 6-10, or 11-15? Evidence highlighted in the correct color? Has the outline been proofread (by you or someone else) and proven to be error-free? ALL OF YOUR HARD WORK IS ABOUT TO PAY OFF Now that your research is complete and you have a working outline and bibliography, the next step is WRITING THE ACTUAL RESEARCH PAPER: It s time for you to put your research paper together from the notes you ve been gathering over the last few weeks. 11

13 How To Structure Writing Within a Research Paper Just as in any other essay, paragraphs in a research paper contain these elements: Topic sentence (TS) Supporting detail (SD) Commentary (CM) The number and pattern of the support will vary according to topic and preference, but the basi uses remain the same. A Topic Sentence (TS) is the first sentence in each body paragraph. is sort of like a mini-thesis for each paragraph. will have a subject and an opinion about the subject and introduce the point that you will argue or support in that particular body paragraph. A Supporting Detail (SD) is specific, relevant information about the subject found during research and recorded on note cards or through annotation and then transferred to your annotated outline. is almost always followed by internal documentation to identify the source of the information (in-text citation). Commentary (CM) is analysis and explanation accompanying a supporting detail. shows why that SD matters or what that SD reveals about the subject. Example Thesis Michael Jordan overcame a difficult childhood to emerge as a leader with integrity both on and off the court. Topic Sentence Michael Jordan struggled through several hardships as a child. Michael Jordan was cut during tryouts for the varsity basketball team, yet as a senior he was a team standout and earned a basketball scholarship to college (Kilmer 49). Jordan was a young man with a strong work ethic who refused to doubt his abilities. He was willing to work hard to make sure that his dreams of playing professional sports became a reality. Commentary Supporting Detail The most important part of the research paper is COMMENTARY. This prevents it from being simply a report. 12

The entire paper is double spaced and written in Times New Roman 12 point font. Your last name goes up here, along with the page number. The method for doing this is described below. Title of the Paper or Assignment: All Appropriate Words Are Capitalized If you are writing an essay, your paper begins here, right under the title, and continues, double spaced, all the way through to the end. Go to format in the toolbar, choose line spacing from the drop down menu and then select double. Please see the instructions provided in this The title or assignment should be centered. survival guide on pages When you re writing an essay, you ll never hit the enter key more than once as you move on to a new paragraph. To add the page number, go to the toolbar and select insert, then select page number. When you click on page number, select the top right of the page and a page number will be inserted into the top of the page. You should then make sure that your last name and page number are oriented to the right margin of the header and are in Times New Roman size 12 font. Again, detailed instructions for formatting the page number have been provided on pages Follow the instructions on page 17 to set your margins to one inch all around and also to make sure that the margin of your paper is left justified. Always indent at the beginning of paragraphs, just like this example, by pressing the tab key. For quotes, you will work in the quote in whatever manner is appropriate and follow it with the correct citation, which varies depending on what you are doing (Smith 34). 13

15 As stated previously, you may use EasyBib.com or any other online bibliography generator to create the works cited page, but I caution you that you MUST check the accuracy of the citation. Make sure you are choosing the correct source formatting. You are responsible for the error even if EasyBib or another site creates it. Proofread your work! Don t wait until the last minute to do your Works Cited page! They are extremely annoying, and you will do it incorrectly if you wait until 2 AM the morning it s due to complete it. Follow the guidelines. If you have questions, please ask! Don t think you can ignore the format and it will just go away! You can easily lose points from mistakes found only on the Works Cited page! If you don t turn in a Works Cited page with your paper, I WON T ACCEPT YOUR PAPER BECAUSE IT WILL BE CONSIDERED PLAGIARIZED! How to create you Works Cited: 1. Begin your Works Cited as a page break in your Google Document. 2. Center the words Works Cited one inch from the top of your paper. 3. Enter the source information in alphabetical order. 4. Double-space the entire Works Cited. 5. Double check that all citations are blocked on the left (NOT INDENTED!) 6. If a citation continues to the next line, then THAT line, and any following lines, are indented. (It s the opposite of a paragraph!) You must document ALL sources in the WORKS CITED PAGE and INSIDE THE PAPER or your entire paper will be considered PLAGARIZED! The Works Cited will be the last full page(s) of your research paper. 16 In your Google Document, create the Last Name and Page Number for each page: 1. On the Insert menu, click Page Number and choose top right of page so that your last name and page number are right justified on each page of your paper. 2. Type your Last Name and 1 in Times New Roman size 12 font: Uncheck this box! If you set this up correctly, the page numbers will automatically advance for you on each page.. 15

17 Now, format the rest of your paper. Make sure your entire paper is double spaced and in Times New Roman size 12 font: 1. From the toolbar, select format, then choose line spacing and double : 2.
