3 SPACE AS A CHARACTERISTIC OF CHILDHOOD An art project as final thesis within the framework of a 3-years Bachelor s study course in the field of arts, Pedagogical Faculty of the University J.E. Purkyne in Usti nad Labem, Czech Republic AUTHOR OF THE PROJECT MENTOR Tereza Dudlová Mgr. Jitka Kratochvílová DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT The project aims at reconstructing an object a doll s house the author loved to play with as a child. With the aid of an object installation, Tereza Dudlová grants the observer a glimpse to a specific space of her childhood. The observer looks at a tiny world of child s play through a peephole in the object. The space installation doll s house is enriched by an authentic childhood photograph of the author as a little girl next to her Christmas present as well as by audio recordings of a video film realized on the same occasion. Furthermore the author presents herself in photomontages as a resident of the doll s house with its tiny doll furniture. In order to enhance authenticity, she is wearing a hometailored little girl s outfit identical to the garments she had been wearing on that Christmas Eve twenty years ago. 03

4 COMMENTS OF THE STUDENT I reconstruct and present my private memories. My aim is to appeal to all senses with my installation. With the aid of the distance of a peephole I present the space of my own childhood plays. This space plays an important role for me. It is the symbol of a time when my family was still complete and the world was still in perfect order for me. The project doll s house and its simplicity appeals to everyone: We all had our favorite childhood toy which when picked up again today revives all our memories of the past. COMMENTS OF THE TEACHERS Tereza Dudlova s work is full of nostalgic memories. Her sources of inspiration are authentic, as authentic as her experiences in her childhood which are preserved in her memory with a touching piety. The author deals with her memories as she would deal with a fragile treasure in order to safeguard a correct interpretation of the issue and to keep important matters from fading away. This allows the author to live through her memories again and again. During the first consultations, T. Dudlova s project appeared to be rather naive and childish. In the course of time, however, we were convinced by the project s depth based on the authenticity of experience. The project is about an intimate matter with a major private meaning which may influence an entire further lifetime by certain sensations. This is where the great value of the project lies. It could even be called an archetype of the seemingly minor childhood memories. The peephole allows for perceiving the interior of the doll s house in a variable visual approach, to ponder the dream world with the help of one s own imagination. This is a very felicitous installation which along with the audio recording and the photomontages forms a total work of art and in its complexity appeals to all senses. (Source: A.
