Prologue Tick tok, tick tok.. The clock struck 7:15 a.m.! tring tring tring My phone rang. Muah. Good morning Akash- my Pucchu, Aditi said and woke me up with a kiss. Very good morning Pucchiya. How are you? I asked. She responded with exultation I am good. Wake up pucchu and get ready for the office. Don t be late, you need to catch the train, she added. I rushed to the bathroom and while I was brushing my teeth I asked myself Am I dreaming or actually all this is happening with me? I couldn t believe Aditi was actually in my life. I felt lucky to have such a partner who took xii

care of me so well. All these thoughts brought a twinkle on my face and filled me with exhilaration. I gazed at the clock and realized that I had got late pondering over all this. I hurriedly took a shower, got ready and hastened to the station. O God, I shouldn t miss my train I prayed to God all the way. I reached and noticed that the train was leaving for Jalandhar. It actually created a scene of Jab we Met. You can imagine my situation similar to Kareena Kapoor. I ran behind the train but unlike the movie I managed to catch it. Phew, Thank God I caught the train I said to myself as that was my day of joining office. When I was about to reach Jalandhar I called up Aditi and asked, Have you reached your office? said. I am on the way, just about to reach. She Did u have your Breakfast I asked her. Pucchu you forgot again? You ask the same question every day. I have my breakfast at 11 during my tea break. she grinned while she replied. xiii

I would deliberately ask this question from her as I loved to hear her laughing. I would be completely love-struck by her laughter. Ok pucchiya I am about to reach my office. Take care. Love You. Bye. I said. Love you too. She replied in a shy tone and hung up the phone. My wife read this and came to me and asked, Whose story is it? I had no idea what she was talking about so I replied in a frightened tone Which story are u talking about? She replied in an aggressive tone, The one in your laptop. I understood that she had read my novel which I had started to write a few years back. I didn t know what to reply, as I could see vexation on her face clearly. Somehow I managed to calm her down and said in a convincing tone, Sit down darling, I will tell u the entire story. xiv

I appeased her and said It s a story which I started writing in Why you didn t tell me about it Why did u hide it? She asked. I didn t hide it I had completely forgotten about it. It s been a long time since I ever read it again. It never came to my mind that I had written any such story. I never intended to hurt you or your feelings. Ok she replied. I want to know the entire story. Ummmm where do I begin from I thought for a while and finally began to unfold my story. ********* xv

25 Jan 05 July CHAPTER 1 Introduction This was the time when I had finished my graduation. I wanted to pursue MBA as my postgraduation. So, one day I called up my school friend Happy to know about his plans for future. Hello Happy How are you? I asked. Hey Akash, I am good So what are you doing these days? I asked. Nothing much, been free all the time since the college got over. He replied. Same is my case but I am planning to pursue MBA. I said. That s great. Do you have any idea about how tough it is to crack the CAT exam? Are you even aware about the exam pattern and the percentile required? He asked. 1

Dheeraj Kapoor I knew he was mocking me. I knew clearing a CAT exam was not my cup of tea so aiming at it was useless. I replied I am not planning to crack CAT exam. I have just searched about the Punjab MAT exam and after clearing this exam I can get admission in some reputed MBA colleges of Punjab. That s great. He said He added At least you have decided what your aim in life is. But I am still undecided about my future plans. After a pause he said Chal we will meet some day and will discuss about it. Take care. Bye. Bye. I said and I hung up the phone. After a week Happy came to my place. As we had met after a very long time we decided to go to our favorite place Crystal. It s famous for its Chinese food. We ordered some manchow soup, hakka noodles and cheese chilly. Till the time our order arrived Happy said Bro you have no idea how annoyed my parents are these days. 2

25 Jan 05 July They are forcing me to get into the family business. said. I am totally confused about what to do. He So what about your plans for MBA? Did you enquire about any institute for preparation of MAT test? He asked. Yes I have shortlisted a few renowned institutes in Amritsar: Parishram, Bulls Eye, Grey Matters and Time. Now I am confused which one to join. I replied While we were discussing all this our order arrived. The food smelt great and looked simply delicious. The waiter served us the food and we continued our discussions. When are you going to the institutes to know about the timings and the fee structure? He asked while having his food. I will probably go on next Monday. I replied. said. Do take me along when you go there. He I felt that Happy was showing a little interest may be because he thought that pursuing MBA was a better option than getting into the family business. 3

Dheeraj Kapoor We finished our food as well as our conversation. One fine day Happy and I went to all the three shortlisted institutes and asked all our queries. After spending a whole long day we finally decided that Parishram was the best in all respects. So we decided to join a crash course to crack the entrance exam at Parishram. The course duration was 45 days. I still remember one of the teachers at the institute- Mrs. Chadha who used to teach us general knowledge and National awareness. She was the owner of the institute. A short heighted lady with a blunt cut aged about 40 years. She was very aggressive by nature. Within a few days of our joining the course, we both became the most famous students of the class. Now and then Mrs. Chadha used to take our names, not because we were the most intellectual guys of the class but because we had earned a back bencher reputation. Each time she came to the class she would ask the same question, Happy and Akash have you revised what I had taught yesterday? We would stand up on our seats with blank faces when we couldn t answer what she asked. We would remain standing in her lecture every day. All the time we used to sit at the last bench and chit chat. We would make fun of the studious students of our class. We would play funny pranks in the class. I remember one day we had our English lecture going on. I and Happy were getting really bored. 4

25 Jan 05 July Happy said with a wicked smile on his face, Chal yaar let s make the lecture interesting. I knew something fishy was on his mind. What s the plan? I asked him. He placed an artificial lizard on the desk of the boy next to us. Suddenly we both started shouting and the boy got so scared that he actually jumped out of his chair and started shouting. The whole class was scared and we both remained silent and it was a real mess at that time in the class. Those were the days of scorching heat so it was quite difficult for us to manage to sit for 5 long hours. Whenever we got a break, we used to secretly go to the admin room as it was airconditioned. Sometimes we did not go back to our class after the break. Saturdays were the days we used to bunk and go for movies. After 25 days we had our first mock test. We were quite scared as we had spent all these days bunking, gossiping and having fun. We attempted our first mock test. I hardly knew anything in the test. Same was the case with Happy. We both were blank during the mock test. After the test I said to Happy, It is not as easy as we both had thought it to be. Exactly. It s very tough. He replied. 5

Dheeraj Kapoor A special session was held the next day for the backbenchers by Mrs. Chadha. She began addressing the class, It s not a joke to crack MBA All you backbenchers seem to be least concerned about your studies and future. Sitting on the last bench and talking this is what you all have been doing in these 25 days. Let me tell you all that we have the next mock test in the following week. If you don t clear it, I will inform your parents about it. Now go back to your classes. The session ended. While we were going back to the class I said to Happy, We shouldn t take this course for granted anymore. This attitude of ours will lead us nowhere. Happy nodded and replied, Yes Akash. You are absolutely right. Let s not waste a single more day. It s high time we start studying seriously. The next few days not only changed our seats in the class but also the backbencher reputation that we had gained in the past few days. 6

25 Jan 05 July Our performance in the next mock test improved to some extent. This time we were also appreciated by Mrs. Chadha. Our performance kept on improving in the next Mock tests. Forty-five days passed by. Finally, our exam day came and we both appeared for the exam at our respective centers. We both met after the exam and discussed about it. How was the exam? Happy asked me. It was quite lengthy. I replied The mathematical part was quite tough. Just half an hour was left and my entire English section was to be done. I added Acha what was your answer of the permutation combinations question? Mine was 6. He replied. O thank God, mine was also 6. I said. I had completely messed up my rough sheets. I couldn t find where I had solved which question. said I was completely lost during the exam. I Acha what did you write the synonym of abhorrence? 7

Dheeraj Kapoor I was confused between hatred and love. He said I marked hatred. I replied O thank god at the end moment I marked hatred. Thank You Babaji. joy. Bas clear hojae exam. He exclaimed with We both felt a little relieved after a few of our answers matched. After discussing it we felt jaise har student ko lagta hai that we would definitely clear it. Now we were desperately waiting for our result. Our routine changed getting up late in the morning, spending the entire day leisurely. We also enquired about the various MBA colleges, their cut offs during this time. As the days passed by we were getting more and more anxious about our result. We would call each other every day and remind each other about the number of days that were left for the result to be declared. The day before the exam result had to be declared I was praying all the time to God that I should get a good rank. The whole day I spent remembering the Almighty. 8

25 Jan 05 July Finally next day, the result was out. Both of us didn t get a good rank. But we had to go for the counseling. So both Happy and I went together for the counseling. During the counseling when we were waiting for our turn I asked Happy, What to do? The top 3 colleges are almost full. Our turn is yet to come. You will go before me as your rank is higher. The next 3 colleges are the average colleges in Punjab. I added. I will drop out the idea of doing MBA in case I don t get admission in any of these 3 colleges. Happy said with a frown on his face. Hmmmmm. I said. We both kept our fingers crossed while we were sitting outside. Happy s turn came and he went for the counseling. When he came out he was quite unhappy. I understood that he couldn t get his desired college. Next was my turn and I went in. Even I wasn t offered the college of my choice. I was offered C.T. Institute of Management, 9

Dheeraj Kapoor Jalandhar. We both were extremely disheartened and disappointed. So, Happy dropped the idea of joining and I was left with no other choice so, I planned to join up C.T. Institute of Management, Jalandhar. After the counseling I couldn t interact much with Happy. I was very excited to join my new college. I searched on the Internet about the reputation, facilities and everything else about the college. I was very curious to know about the location of the college. So, one day I called up my friend Kabir who belonged to Jalandhar. I thought he would be able to help me in knowing about the whereabouts of the college. Hi Kabir. Akash this side. I said Oh hello Akash. Where have you been? It s been a long time since we have talked. he replied in an excited tone. Bas had been busy with my MBA crash course. Acha I have got admission in Jalandhar only. I said Oh that s great. 10
