January 18th, 2017: Terminale s trip to Nice! During the beginning of the year the Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 European sections had the opportunity to experience a Shakespeare play at the Théâtre National de Nice. With a full production of The Winter s Tale in English, performed by English actors, the students experienced a full night of English immersion. Following the performance, the students were asked some questions about their reactions, opinions, likes, and dislikes surrounding the piece. Continue on to see some Jules-Ferry student reactions!

Le conte d hiver festival Shake Nice! > Janvier, mecredi 18 20H00 William Shakespeare, mise en scène Declan Donnellan Shakespeare can not do without the magician, Declan Donnellan. After years of success in Paris, and for the first time in Nice, the English director takes us through his vision of the Winter Tale, one of Shakespeare's most beautiful plays. With his troupe of fourteen actors labeled "so british", it magnificently orchestrates this work oscillating between tragedy and light comedy. The magic operates on an intense rhythm, the piece comes to life in a staged production where the drama is constantly countered by fantasy and dream. From the first scene, under the powerful and tortured play of the sublime Orlando James, the jealousy of the delirious and paranoid King Leontes bursts out, accusing his wife Hermione of having deceived him with his best friend, the King of Bohemia. The soul of the sovereign laid bare, his family torn, his kingdom mined, the story takes a very dark turn. It will take fourteen years for this bad weather to dissipate and happiness to return to the kingdom of Sicily. In the meantime, one will have crossed the seas, discovered a daughter of an abandoned king, and a disguised prince, playing the tender shepherds. We will have succumbed to the irresistible gags, to the anachronisms, to a catchy party mixing rock, soul and madness. Finally, one is moved to tears by the power of a love that brings life like spring after winter. A true masterpiece in original version.

What was your overall reaction to play, The Winter's Tale? Léana Guidetti, The first part of the play, the tragedy, was very meaningful, deep, and moving. I liked it very much as it spoke to me, and the parts of the play that were meant to be scary, definitely succeeded. The second part of the play, the comedy, was very intriguing, memorable, and unique. Both of the part s mise en scène was excellent, and I didn t even realize how much time was passing because of how captivated I was. The play was very original because of how old it is, but portrayed with sets and characters that were very modern, along with the plot-twists of the play. So overall I found the production memorable because of how much I enjoyed it. Paul Maurice, Well, to be honest I was expecting to see something a bit boring, but it was a real pleasant surprise to see that they worked hard on the way they interpreted the play. I have to admit that I enjoyed it even if the dialogues were a bit hard to follow and the translations were not perfect. The representation itself was really good. Christophe Gomis,

Our favorite part of the play was the second half. It was really captivating and funny, especially when the character Autolycus was introduced. He was more animated and entertaining than the other characters. Our least favorite part was the very beginning of the play, and the parts we didn t understand. Morgan Danssaert, My favorite part was the last scene when all the characters stood beneath the statue of Hermione. This scene was really intense, moving, and well interpreted. My least favorite part was the part where we see grown Perdita for the first time. Her character quite annoyed me actually. My favorite part was the first half, before the intermission. My favorite moment was the scene with the storm because that s the moment I felt a lot of emotions, I was afraid, surprised, and on the edge of my seat. My least favorite part was the last scene, when Hermione came to life. I think it was so strange compared to the spirit of the rest of the play, so I thought the end was disappointing. Alyssa Russo and Thibault Roudier, Manon Waeytens, What was your favorite part of the play? What was your least favorite part?

If you were the director of the play, what would you change? The director s style was perfect for our generation. We can relate to it more because jealousy and friendship are situations that we have in our everyday life. Hechmi Bouglita, If I was the director I wouldn t change anything, I thought his style was very impressive and unique. Emma Marongiu, I wouldn t change anything if I were the director. I think that his distinct style fit very well in the play because it made it more modern and authentic, versus the other interpretations of Shakespeare. Lancelot Bonnefoy,

Who did you think were the most compelling characters of the play? Leontes was definitely the most compelling character by the way they illustrated his madness. He seemed like the most complex of the characters, and his actor did a good job of showing that. Hermione was the most compelling character because she played the part very well and shared her emotions with the audience, especially the scene in court when she was falsely accused of betraying her husband. Julie Bethenod, Océane Sin-Teav, Coline Repaux, The most compelling character was Hermione, King Leontes s wife. Some of the other students, as well as myself thought that her behavior and expressions showed that she was really pregnant!
