They re basically the main idea. They make up all the rules. Now, lots of kids probably don t even know where they are or even who. Committee Amarillo College presents Bill Nye, The Science Guy Tuesday, March 8th 7:30 Civic Center Grand Plaza Tickets available at Amarillo College ******************* IMPORTANT CHANGE: SNOW MAKE-UP DAY WILL BE MONDAY, MAY 23RD!! ********************* Valentine s Day Taryn Galt. The holiday gets its name from Saint Valentine of Rome. He was a gentle priest who died more than a thousand years ago. This young priest named Valentine was put in prison in Rome hundreds of years ago because of his faith. Much later a feast was held to honor him on Feb. 14 th.the legend of Valentine says that this young priest wanted his family to know he was ok. The story says that a patch of flowers grew beyond his window. He picked some of the heart- shaped petals and wrote on them, Remember you, valentine and sent them off by a dove. No one knows for sure if this really happened or not, but it s a great story. Valentines Day has become about giving gifts, flowers, candy and cards to people we love and sweethearts. My favorite part of Valentine s Day is giving my valentines cards to my friends and family. Homework Abigail Zbinden Hi, I m doing an article about homework. Some of you groan when you hear that word, but some kids actually like it! I have been going around and asking learners and teachers what they think about homework and why they think it is important. One interesting comment that I heard quite a bit was, I like homework, but I just need it to be harder. It seems too easy to me. Here are some others, I enjoy math homework, but I want it to be easier. I like our reading log, and I don t want to change it I like homework; I just want it to be harder. I like homework, but I want more. I like homework I just want it to be harder. We don t get very much homework in my class. But I like the homework that we get. I really don t like homework, and I would like for us to not have to do it.. It is obvious that most of the Olsen learners like homework and would like it to be harder. But even if you don t like it, don t feed it to your dog! Page 2
3 Volume I, Issue 3 Crazy Mad Lib-Nancy I am a little and I live in a. I want to tell you a little about myself. I love to run and, (verb) and my favorite color is! (Adjective) I went to and got carried away and traveled much too far to. Then I went to, and I ate a delicious. Then I was sleepy so I went and slept in a.while I was waking up, another trudged up quietly and slowly behind me and fell over on my face. All of a sudden he, HAPPY (verb) VALENTINES DAY! Book Review Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink - Adley Gray This sweet younger children s book by Diane De Groat is about an opossum named Gilbert. His teacher told him to make a nice Valentine for each friend in his class. He finds it fun to do yet how can he write something nice about people who tweak his nose and make fun of his glasses? This can only mean trouble! For you older children, read Lost and Found by Andrew Clements. It s about twins, Ray and Jay. When the Jay goes to school and Ray stays home sick, he realizes that both of their information got put into one file! So they take turns going to school, thinking they ll still have fun it s only trouble! Don t forget to keep reading, it s good for your brain! Would You Rather Who would you rather meet a historical character such as Amelia Earhart, a present day celebrity such as Justin Bieber, a story book character such as Harry Potter, a superhero such as Batman, or a President such as Ronald Reagan? Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly across in the Atlantic Ocean in an airplane. Was she afraid? What made her want to fly? Justin Bieber is a teen pop music star. He got famous off YouTube. Do you write your own songs? Where do you get ideas for songs? Batman flies and battles the evil villain Joker. How did he and Joker become enemies? Does he like pizza? Stephen Pulliam I would like to meet Harry Potter because he s the main character of my favorite book series in the world, and because I find him very interesting; yet I know very little about what he does. What is his favorite sport? I would like to ask him what he likes about being Harry Potter, what s his favorite food. I think Harry Potter would ask me, Why do kids sit in front of a screen all day with big controllers in their hands, staring, ever unblinking, at the flashing screen? Why don t you decide who you would like to meet, and write a paragraph about them and why you want to meet them. Send it to Mrs. Bowen, or put it in Mrs. Bowen s box, and we might put it in the news letter next month! Page 3

I m sweet on you. Winter Wow by Cooper Newsome 4th grade writer My eyes pop open as I see the glistening world of white. I ran down the stairs and got the key to having fun in the snow a sled. I sprint outside and find the biggest hill in the neighborhood and climb quickly up to the very top. As I sit down on my sled a rush of fear and pride shoots through my veins. I push. My hair flies behind me and my mouth opens so wide a bear could mistake it for a cave. I feel like I am jello flying through the air off 1 st grader s lunch tray. Then it happened. A girl scream escapes my mouth. Not only am I petrified but now I am embarrassed too. I glance over to see what everybody is thinking. I hit a rock and flipped off my sled. I am sliding on my back and my hat slips over my eyes. I am blinded and I have no idea what was coming next. Splat! I am buried 2ft under snow but proud. At that point I realize I m not a girl. I m a man, a man who needs to change his pants.
5 Featured writer Jenna.. I step out of the limo. There are fans screaming my name. It s as if I m the sun and they re a field of flowers and are fighting to get a prick of me. In the building there are even more people. They are behind a long red velvet rope that holds them back. I swear, if I was a famous bug and they were a stampeding buffalo and they let that rope go I would go, well SQUISH!!! It s a long walk to backstage, but when I get there a lady is singing and she s almost done. The judges vote Yes! She made it! The audience goes wild! Next up on America s Got Talent, boomed a voice. I crinkled my music, I felt sweat appear on my forehead and trickle down my face and on my costume. I wipe it away with my hankie my mom gave me for good luck. I step onto the stage. The lights are piercing my eyes. I sit down at the piano and begin to play. After I m done all the judges vote Yes! The audience roars! JEN-NA! JEN-NA! JEN-NA! Then it slowly slips into reality. The faces fuzz and the shouting fades to my mom s voice. Jenna?! Jenna?! She asked shaking me. What? I asked drowsily. What happened to the music? I must have dosed off. I replied. She went back to the kitchen and I started playing Beethoven s 6 th on the piano, still keeping the constant chanting of the audience in my head, reminding me that someday I ll get there. Featured writer Alex.. What if there s no school? Aww man, do I really have to go to school I groaned getting out of bed. My mom turned around, gave me the skunk eye and told me What would it be like if we had no school? I went back to my dream about when I was 7. I walked through the leaves to school and thought why do I have to go to school? When I walked into school I vividly remember the smell of mash potatoes. I guessed that s what they were cooking in the cafeteria. I noticed the time, 7:57, I ran to class. I walked in and saw everybody sitting down, I took a seat. My teacher taught us how to use the computer like power points, typing things and the internet. I woke up and noticed that dream inspired me to go to school because computers reminded me of if we didn t have school how would we have computers or even simple thing like a Kleenex box because you have to know the perimeter and that involves math. We wouldn t have architectures because that involves adding the length and width which would be area. I now thought I guess the skunk eye works because now I am always going to school!
