The Hugh O Brian Youth (HOBY) leadership training was founded in Hugh O Brian Youth leadership has a mission to inspire and develop our global community youth to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation. HOBY programs are used annually throughout the United States serving local and international high school students. There were over 500 people chosen to attend HOBY. Will Johnson is one of the two students chosen to represent TFA. Will heard from Mrs. Gregory that he could be a natural leader and he could get people to listen. He didn t know he was going to get chosen to represent TFA. Will s brother Lyle went to the Broyhill Leadership Conference to represent TFA. Will s brother was also president for Student Council as a junior and a senior. Will thinks he needs to do the same thing as his brother because he has always had trouble living in his shadow. Will would like to represent The Fletcher Academy in the best way possible. He is very glad that he is going to be representing HOBY this summer. Will hopes to get something out of this conference, and when he comes back, he will put his new learned skills to the test. Tristen Lafferty is the other TFA representative for HOBY. He is doing HOBY because Mrs. Blaylock picked him. Tristen is most looking forward to meeting other schools and representing The Fletcher Academy in the best way possible. He says the conference is a statewide thing. Tristen thinks attending HOBY will be fun experience socializing with other 10th graders and learning leadership skills. ~ Robert Grubb Inside this issue: New Basketball Coach Ms. Rich s Little Rascal 3 Backpack Buddies 3 Shakespeare 4 Texting and Driving Ins. 2 P a g e 2 F a l c o n F Y I TFA has a sport coming up this year, and it is called basketball. Jordan Davis, a new 8th grader at TFA and a basketball player, ays that what he likes about basketball is that it is a sport that s a team effort. Jordan has been playing basketball for two years. He wanted to play basketball because he wanted to play a school sport. Jordan has played at another place besides TFA, Durant Road Middle School. Something that he likes about the new coach is that he won t allow you to slack and that he pushes them to get better and better. One of the thing that the new coach will teach you about is the wings on the court, and what not to do and what to do when you're in the game. Coach Alford does not have any pets, but he said that he has two beautiful daughters that are way better than pets. His daughter s names are Taylor who is 6 years old and Avery who is 3 years old. Outside of basketball, his main job is a stay-at-home (or rather stay-on thego) parent. He is also working on a Masters Degree in social work at NC State so he can do counseling. Coach Alford said that he is very involved with his church and also has a band called The Blues Recovery Project. Coach Alford also enjoys watching sports and playing basketball. What made him want to coach at TFA was because of Betsy Gillespie, a friend from church who asked him if he would be interested. Now he has a dream come true, loves basketball, working with kids, and was looking (and praying) for another part-time job. Coach Alford immediately scheduled an appointment with Coach Joyner and loved the school and its mission. Coach Alford says, You all have amazing opportunity in sports and academics! Your students are very amazing people. It has been a pleasure to work with the basketball team and get to meet other students as they have introduce themselves to me. Coach Alford says that he grew up as a UNC fan but went to State where his allegiance changed. He is an all-wolfpack fan, he says, though he married a UNC graduate and grew up in Pirate Country. He has taken classes at UNC and Duke as well. He says he appreciates all the big schools around here, but he is a Wolfpack guy. In high school he was better at music than sports, so he did that more than sports, but he did play baseball until he was 16 years old, although not for high school. He did spend many hours growing up playing basketball and football in his neighborhood. For high school Coach Alford went to J.H. Rose High School in Greenville. Coach Alford s favorite sport is basketball. His favorite restaurant is the Angus Barn, though Coach Alford has only been there once due to the high prices (he and his wife were able to dine there for under $60 by sharing a meal and they had plenty to eat...that is a more affordable way to go, but still expensive!). For a quick meal the Backyard Burger is his favorite choice. Coach Alford loves getting the grilled Hawaiian Chicken sandwich with baked potato. Coach Alford s hobbies are playing music and going to the gym to play basketball. One tip that Coach Alford has for the basketball team is to outsmart your opponent. ~ Carson Sweeny Above: Coach Alford; Left: Kevin Pitino plays defense against Ms. Coleman in the game against TFA alumni, parents, and faculty. 3 V o l u m e 1 5, I s s u e 4 P a g e 3 Ms. Rich s Little Rascal As everyone knows, our beloved Ms. Rich had a beautiful baby girl named Reagan a couple months ago. Ms. Rich and her husband thought of that name when they looked through a book called One Hundred Thousand and One Baby Names, and it was the only one they could agree on. The baby s Photo of Reagan courtesy of Ms. Rich weight was 6 pounds, 15 ounces. Her birthday is September 29, 2013, and she was born at 7:05 pm. Ms. Rich did want to know whether it was a boy or girl so that she could paint her room and pick out her clothes. Reagan s middle name is Mildred, and they thought of that name because both of Ms. Rich and Mr. Rich s grandmothers names are Mildred. ~ Kathleen Urgo It s Not Just Adults in Need of Food A lot of people don t realize how many people are starved because they can t afford food. In Wake County an organization called Backpack Buddies was invented. This organization sends kids home with backpacks on Friday filled with food for the weekend. That next Monday the kids bring the backpacks back so they can be filled again. During the school week the students get breakfast and lunch during the school day. The Backpack Buddies program is currently serving 35 schools with 3,200 kids enrolled to get food on the weekends. If people donate $150 a year, that s enough money to support a child for the whole school year. When you think about it, that number of kids who are starved grows bigger every day and that s not good. While on summer break, the kids don t have any food to eat, so the community has come up with another organization to feed the kids. I think everybody should do something to help out these kids, because nobody deserves to go home hungry. ~ Catherine Bryant Check out the FYI s audio stories at This month s feature story is a review on the new movie Catching Fire. ~Nathan Ebberts
4 William Shakespeare is one of the most famous playwrights of all time, and a group of actors and actresses came to The Fletcher Academy to perform some famous parts of plays written by Shakespeare. The plays that were performed were Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew, Midsummer's Night Dream, and more. Everybody laughed at some of the William Shakespeare. humorous parts from CC image courtesy of Shakespeare plays. Before this Books18 via Flickr. performance, not a lot of TFA students, however, acknowledged the humorous parts because when people think of Shakespeare s plays, they usually think that it s only serious, no humor at all, even though that s not the case. We also learned a lot of stuff about Shakespeare, like the way he wrote his plays was similar to Tupac, a really famous rapper who sold over 75 million albums in During the assembly, Jonathan Fitts, one of the actors that talked about Shakespeare, did a little thing that he mentions a line from either Shakespeare or Tupac and the audience had to guess where it came from to show that Shakespeare s style isn t old-fashioned at all. A lot of people really liked the performance. Here s what one of the students says about the performance. It was amazing! Zach Lange said. It was hard to choose which one s my favorite part. He said that he would watch it again and would love to have Burning Coal do this again next year. Even the teachers really liked it. I thought it was hilarious! Mr. MacDonald said. It made Shakespeare seem more accessible, or less old and boring. I m glad that the humor in Shakespeare was obvious. Even though Mr. MacDonald didn t really learn anything new about Shakespeare because he has taught Shakespeare, he still would love to watch the assembly again and would like to have the performers do it again next school year. The performers also loved performing in the assembly. Performing Shakespeare is one of my greatest joys in life, Jonathan Fitts, a Director of Education from the Burning Coal Theatre Company, said to the FYI. Being able to share his work with students is an even greater joy. His favorite part of performing is when the audience gets it, and he really likes removing the roadblocks that people have about Shakespeare plays, like the stereotype that they are hard to understand and boring. Jonathan s personal favorite play is A Midsummer Night s Dream because of the humor part of it which the audience really enjoys. Burning Coal Theatre Company does more than just Shakespeare; they do a lot of other plays too. The company s mission is to produce theatre that is experienced, not simply seen. They also go to many other schools of any kind. They don t just teach Shakespeare, they also teach from a range of stuff from playwriting to mask performance. If you want more information about the Burning Coal Theatre Company, go to their website: Everybody loved the Shakespeare plays that the Burning Coal Theatre Company performed at the Fletcher Academy. A lot of people that saw the assembly possibly want to see it again next year. It was a really cool and funny assembly about Shakespeare, and a lot of people loved it. Did you enjoy the assembly? ~ Matthew Williams See more photos online Top: One of the performers performing in front of crowd. Right: Jonathan Fitts performing. 5 Opinion Page Welcome to Sweet CeCe s! If you have a sweet tooth, then Sweet CeCe s is the place to go. I have been working at Sweet CeCe s for almost two years now. And from my experiences there, I wouldn t want to work anywhere else. Sweet CeCe s has the friendliest environment. We treat everyone with respect, and treat them like they are our best friends. Even when we get not the nicest customer, we always have a smile on our face, and always turn that customer s frown upside down. What I ve always loved about Sweet CeCe s from my first time ever walking into that store was that it was clean! Everything stays sanitized and you will never find a fingerprint or a smudge on anything. Also, we have a huge choice of candy and toppings. Our back wall is just covered in candy! I will be surprised if there is a candy we don t have that you want. But if so, we always take suggestions for new toppings. And of course, we also have a bar filled with REAL cookie dough, REAL brownies, REAL cheesecake, and FRESH fruit. And we can t forget about the yogurt, right? Our yogurt is an endless list. We change the yogurt about every five to seven days. So that if there is a flavor you want but isn t out yet, trust me, it will come. Lastly, every holiday our store changes! We decorate it to look like the holiday. It s beautiful! Fall and winter are my favorite times of the year, and being at Sweet CeCe s makes it a whole lot better! So make sure you come down and get some yogurt, who knows, you could see me! ~ FaithAnn Banks Sweet CeCe s of Wake Forest 3624 Rogers Rd Wake Forest, NC Stay Connected! falconfyi.weebly.com
