4 Name Date How Elephant Got His Trunk One day long ago, Elephant came to a pond to drink the cool ' water. He saw Crocodile taking a nap. Elephant and Crocodile often liked to tease each other. So, Elephant decided to play a trick on Crocodile. While Crocodile was sleeping, Elephant put some mud into Crocodile's ears. Elephant thought to himself how surprised Crocodile would be when he woke up and could not hear. After a while, Elephant woke Crocodile. Crocodile said, "How are you today. Elephant?" Elephant seemed only to move his mouth as if he were speaking. Now, Crocodile was clever, and he realized, what Elephant had done. So he decided to play his own trick on I Elephant. Crocodile said, "I can't hear you. Please come a little closer." I W h e n Elephant got close enough, Crocodile snapped with his jaws and grabbed Elephant's tiny nose. Elephant pulled and pulled to try to get away. The more Elephant pulled, the more his nose stretched. In the end, Elephant pulled free, but not before his nose had stretched into a long trunk.
