Drinking water can be made safe by treating it with chlorine. Milk can be made safe by heating it and then packing it in sterilised containers. But it is either very difficult or simply not possible to treat most of the things we eat, in either of these ways. All that can be done is either to prevent bacteria from entering the food, or to stop them form growing after they have entered. For a long time, it was believed that some substances called ptomaines were agents of food poisoning but it was finally discovered that these ptomaine found in rotten food, can be swallowed without the harmful effects that follows it. In 1888, about 60 people, all of whom had eaten meat taken from the same animal, were taken ill, and one man died. Dr. Gaertner, a German bacteriologist, was able to isolate the food poisoning bacteria (Salmonella) which had caused the outbreak; and put forward the theory that all food poisoning was due to the presence of such bacteria. We were eight members in the team. The whole trip took us ten days in the mountains. Throughout the way our guide and my father explained to us about the various features of the Himalayas we were passing through. We had to face bad weather for two days. There was steep climb at some places and as we climbed up we were affected by high altitude sickness and lack of oxygen and we felt very tired. Pindari glacier is surrounded on all sides by snow covered peaks such as Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, Nanda Khat, Bailiuri and many more. This glacier is a frozen river of ice and settled in such a way that it looked like a huge staircase. Professor John Coleman and his team are one of four teams to win the Digging into Data competition set up to encourage imaginative, forward-thinking research using large-scale computing in Humanities. The resulting database will contain a years worth of spoken English and the project mining a year of speech will create the world s largest searchable database of spoken English sound recordings. It will be a useful resource for anyone interested in spoken English not just phoneticians and linguists, but also many other kinds of people such as teachers of English language, social historians, and interested members of the public. Professor Coleman said, in a world where there`s more multimedia available than text, audio searching is becoming a vital technology, even Google is moving into it now.
