Our staff worked very hard and put in a lot of hours to get this first issue out to you before Thanksgiving Break. We hope you enjoy it!!! -Staff What happened at the 5k?! On October 16, 2010, the Nick Kot 5k Run/Walk was held at Gwendolyn Brooks Elementary School. There were people at Brooks school who ran the race. This is what they thought: How did you feel after you ran the race? I felt tired and proud. 2 Who s New at Brooks? Mrs. Lambert This is Mrs. Lambert s first year teaching at Brooks Elementary School. She is Brooks reading interventionist. Q. What is it like at Brooks? A. Brooks is the first school that she has taught at full time, and we are glad to have her! She has been to Ireland and France. She loves to run, and her favorite word is imagine. 3 Upcoming Events!!! The Jungle Book Fundraiser The Jungle Book Fundraiser is at Waubonsie Valley High School on November 20, 2010, which starts at 1:00pm and goes until 2:15pm. Also, its first performance is at Metea Valley High School in the new auditorium. Hosted by Alphabet Soup Productions. Please help raise money for schools in Indian Prairie School District (District 204). Tickets are $5 (credit cards not accepted.) There will be a fun play that kids will love and enjoy it. You can order your tickets by mail to Bob Biedron S. Sunningdale Court, Naperville, IL 60564, or go to If you send an order form and the tickets are all sold out, Alphabet Soup Productions will send your check back to you. Go order those tickets before it is to late. By: Isaac Margulies and Jack Korsgard Thanksgiving Break!! It s almost Thanksgiving! Time to eat delicious food and celebrate with friends and family. What do you have planned for Thanksgiving break? Are you going out of town or having a family party? What kind of foods are you going to eat? Not everyone will eat a traditional Thanksgiving meal. For example, my family and I eat chicken instead of turkey. Share with your friends what you are going to do for Thanksgiving break! Where can you find the survey? 4 Sports NHL Predictions: Chicago Blackhawks Repeat as Central Division Champs Blackhawks This division is going to be more competitive than people think, but be prepared for a similar story to last year. The Blackhawks lost a lot of players like Stanley cup hero and goal tender Antti Niemi. They are developing the players that they drafted. They still have excellent players from last year like Patrick Kane and Jonathon Toews. Red Wings The Detroit Red Wings had a lot of injuries to players all over the board last year. This could be one of the reasons they fell short of their goals. However, they are healthy this year. With the help of goalkeeper Jimmy Howard, they should be able to make a run for the championship. Blackhawks Season Review The winning of the Stanley cup has been replaced with expectations of repeating. This will not be an easy task. In Chicago when the Blackhawks won the cup the fans went crazy! Stan Bowman has done a good job of rebuilding his team without changing his strategy. When you make the ability to make changes without having your team talk to you it is not an easy thing to do. Bowman did it when he was getting new players in the draft picks. Bam: Hard Hits in the NFL Cause Major Problems By Griffin Despot Coaches in the NFL are complaining about hard hits to the head or neck area. Why is this an issue? Why do people make such a big deal about it? Isn t that what fans want to see? First and foremost, there is a common misconception that there is a new rule regarding helmet-to-helmet contact. However, this is not the case. Officials are just calling these illegal hits more in order to protect the players. Concussions are becoming more and more of a problem, and research has shown that concussions can have a major effect on your health and brain activity later on in life. In order to remedy this situation, the NFL is fining players who deliver these illegal hits. Jason Babin from the Titans, was fined $20,000. Nick Collins from Green Bay, was fined $50,000, and James Harrison from Pittsburg has been fined a total of $75,000! That s a lot of money! The NFL is also threatening to suspend players who have been fined multiple times. If you are looking to play in the NFL, then you better watch out for these fines. 4

5 Sports Baseball No Longer Popular?! Sadly as we all know it, baseball is in the past. Now some might object, but think about it. Baseball was once the king of sports. Think of all the awesome players: Babe Ruth, Roberto Clemente, or Jackie Robinson. I don t know much about it, but it has come to this. Now the only thing people talk about is football all day long according to my opinion. Men watch football all day long, and then they don t pay attention to females. Sometimes, we watch it, but baseball, no way!! Don t waste my time on that! According to Joshua Duffy, he describes it as a slow, simple, boring game. Now there are still fans out there, but who wants to watch men throwing balls, hitting them with a stick, and spitting out unappetizing tobacco. I don t want to offend people but I think it s time for baseball to go. Also, who wants a World Series when it says it s about the world when it is really about the country? Baseball is so old fashioned. Boys in the 1930 s would play it all the time! Now boys at recess play football. Sadly, I think baseball has come to an end. No one talks much about it anymore. It might be the same with horse racing. No one talks about it only the fans, and only a few channels show that sport. It doesn t mean it is gone, it s just set aside for other sports. There are still baseball fans out there, but what I m trying to say is there are not as many fans. Plus you can t have a feast and watch a good game like football. You decide, is baseball no longer as popular as it used to be? By Victoria Lopez Bullying Section Question 1: What should I do if I go through stop, walk, and talk, the bully keeps on coming back? Well, what you should do if this happens is go right to the principle, a teacher, or any adult. The bullying situation goes to far when this happens. The principle should be able to work out a solution to this. Afterwards, just keep your distance from the bully. Studying/ Homework Section Question 2: What do I do when it s too loud in the classroom, and kids won t stop talking? I can t study when it s this loud! The teacher will normally tell the class to quiet down by then. If the teacher isn t in the room, a teacher next door will probably hear and tell the class to quiet down. Question 3: Do you have any good tips for studying? Make sure you re in a well-lit room. Also, make sure that every thing that you may find distracting are out of the way, and turned off (DS, TV, computer, ipod, etc.). Question 4: How can you get all your homework done if you have extracurricular activities? Do homework on the bus, in the car, and any extra time you have to finish your homework. 6 Book Reviews Touching Spirit Bear By: Ben Michelson Response by: Luke Long and Madison Perkins Can a mythical bear help a boy beyond human reach? This book is about a criminal named Cole Matthews. He has been a troublemaker his whole life. I am going to tell you about the worst trouble he has ever caused. Cole got out of school and found Peter Driscal on the playground in the back of the school. Cole suddenly had a rage and started to beat up Peter. Cole could not stop this rage. The nearby students tried to pull Peter away, but it was too late, Cole had already bashed Peter s head on the sidewalk and left him with permanent damage. Cole is caught by the police. As for his punishment, he has to choose between being in a jail cell for the rest of his life, or going to a remote Alaskan island in the middle of nowhere. Cole says he would do anything to get out of a jail cell. So, Cole decides to go to the Alaskan island. One day on this Alaskan island Cole gets mauled by a Spirit Bear. Will the attack of the Spirit Bear destroy Cole s life or save his soul? This is a book for ages 10 and up. Why? It has so much fighting and things that people wouldn t understand if they were 1 st grade through 3 rd grade. Miss Daisy is Crazy by: Dan Gutman Reviewed by: Madison Perkins& Luke Long Miss Daisy is Crazy, a book in the My Weird School Series, is hilarious! It s about this kid named A.J who hates school. However, there is a new teacher named Miss. Daisy. She was never qualified to be a teacher, and all she does is sit around eating Bonbons. Miss. Daisy teaches second grade. The only problem she has is that she doesn t know how to write spell, read, subtract, or even add. That s kind of a big problem! They have to read a million pages, but you ll have to read the book to see why. Oh by the way, did I mention that she is on of the craziest teachers in the world! I recommend this book to young readers such as 1 st, 2 nd, or maybe even 3 rd graders. This book is comical, wacky, and side-splitting. If you like funny fiction books than this is the book for you. (That is why they call the book Miss Daisy is Crazy). Be sure to check out the next book in this series Mr. Klutz is Nuts. Mr. Klutz is nuts is about a principle that has gone out of his mind. This is a book for people who enjoy laughing. Enjoy this laugh-a-lot, exciting, and exhilarating book Miss Daisy is Crazy!!! (This book is also in the library). 6
