7 This is not a biographical film. s Statements To retrace and reconstruct the life and work of Carlo Di Palma is a way of recalling and rediscovering the methods and values of golden age cinema, Italian yes, but one that has had an impact and influence upon filmmakers in all the world. It is also a lesson in living: to live and to work with passion, simplicity and rigor. Carlo Di Palma, deeply rooted in Rome, through profound ties his roots reflects an international vision. It is also a lesson in art, one that refuses compromises. It is the story of a long search for perfection, through experimentation and innovation in film language, both technical and artistic, in the search every time of the best way to tell a story. With rigor, without ever sacrificing quality. My first contact with Carlo Di Palma was as a student of cinema, when I was in my first year and saw Blow Up. This film had such an effect on me that it became part of my life forever. I was also so impressed by the cinematography that without actually having met Carlo Di Palma at the time, I wrote a thesis on it. Many years later, I was asked to make this film. It was an opportunity not only to talk about Blow up and the films of Michelangelo Antonioni, but also so many other films that have become classics in the history of cinema. Films that are loved by directors in all the world and that have influenced their work. The more than one hundred films that Carlo Di Palma shot, and in which he participated, render a sweeping in-depth view of neorealism, Italian comedy, the masterpieces of Antonioni, and the best films of Woody Allen. Over the five years I spent working on this project, I discovered ever more the values of which Carlo Di Palma speaks in his interviews, and how the example of his work is so relevant and necessary for cinema, today perhaps more than ever before. ACEK srl About the production Carlo Di Palma was one of the great talents who, through their genius, contributed to creating the "Italian style" cinema that became famous throughout the world. We feel that this documentary is not only the story of the life of Carlo Di Palma, but that it is also a veritable journey through Italian cinema, through the more than one hundred films on which he collaborated: from Luchino Visconti's film masterpiece and the manifesto of neorealism, Ossessione, to the sparkling Italian comedies of the great masters, to the famous classics that became landmarks in the history of world cinema, such as Deserto Rosso and Blow Up by Michelangelo Antonioni. We believe that CARLO DI PALMA The Colours of Life (Acqua e Zucchero) can serve as encouragement, inspiration, and as a lesson too, for all of those young people who are driven by a genuine love and intense passion for cinema. So that they may be shown what unimaginable heights they can achieve through sacrifice, coherency in their values, commitment in their artistic choices, and mastery of their craft. Why did we choose the director Fariborz Kamkari? We asked Fariborz Kamkari to direct CARLO DI PALMA The Colours of Life not only because of his sensitive artistic abilities but with his international culture he could bring a more universal perspective to the documentary. In fact, Fariborz Kamkari, though he did not personally know Carlo Di Palma, studied his cinema and was strongly influenced by that unique cinematography which through its refined technique, nuances and luminous warm colors, contributed a different essence and profound meaning to each and every film. "Light, depth and magic". Adriana Chiesa undertook painstaking in-depth research into the life and work of Carlo Di Palma and worked alongside the director to evoke aspects of the figure of Carlo Di Palma that were not always known to the public: a person of intense humanity, tremendous vitality and natural elegance, and the stories, recollections, and cherished emotions that accompanied him all his life. 9 Biography Fariborz Kamkari ( ) Fariborz Kamkari is a Kurdish Iranian film maker based in Italy. His features include Black Tape: A Tehran Diary, the Videotape Fariborz Kamkari Found in the Garbage (02), The Forbidden Chapter (06), Golakani Kirkuk The Flowers of Kirkuk (10), and, Pitza e datteri (15). His mostrecent film is Water and Sugar: Carlo Di Palma, The Colours of Life (16).
