CAST Audition Packet Winter 2019 By Christopher Burrito Auditions: December 5, After school until all have auditioned Callbacks (by invitation only): December 6, :20 5:45 pm Performance Dates 2/2019: Tuesday, February 12: Elementary Matinee 1:30 PM Wednesday, February 13: After school matinee 3:30 PM Thursday, February 14: Evening Performance 7:00 PM Friday, February 15: Evening Performance 7:00 PM Please read this entire packet carefully! It is especially important that you, and your parents, read and understand the Top Ten Things to Know about MT theatre. This will help you understand the casting process.
Length: About 60 minutes. By Christopher Burrito ABOUT THE SCRIPT: Once upon a time lived Beullah the Witch and her more winsome sister, Francine. They were as opposite as opposite could be. Jealous of Francine s beloved daughter, Princess Rose, Beullah gives Princess Rose an evil curse. Thanks to the curse, Princess Rose grows up to be a Royal Pain, Now, 21 years later, Princess Rose must get married to be queen. Yet, who will marry such a bad apple? None other than Jonathan the meek assistant (to the assistant) shepherd. But before they can live happily ever after, they must overcome Beullah the Witch and a band of bumbling trolls. Cast of Characters: (Note: Below is a representation of the characters in the play. Please understand that some roles may not be listed while others are gender flexible and may be cast differently than shown. In addition, some skits may be added or deleted.) Narrator 1...The narrator gets eaten during the first scene. (9 lines) Narrator 2...Replaces Narrator 1. (23 lines) Beullah... A witch who is very jealous of her sister, Francine, who married a prince and became queen. (71 lines) Courtiers... nonspeaking Princess Rose... She is on the verge of adulthood and is one day away from Coming of Age when she becomes queen. Despite suitors, no one wishes to marry her and it s easy to see why! Rose, also known as the Royal Pain, is a stubborn, forceful young woman, and terrorizes all who interact with her! (82 lines) King... A big foggy and forgetful. (4 lines) Queen... She is more on top of things than her husband. (10 lines) Advisor... The royal advisor is bold, trustful and confiding and not afraid to call Princess Rose a royal pain to her face. (10 line) 3 Trolls...Fawning, bumbling and funny. Lemmy (25 lines) Norbert (36 lines) Wally (18 lines) Magic Mirror... A wise-cracking character full of personality. (11 line) Maids...They are frightened by Princess Rose because she abuses them. (3 lines among them) Jonathan... A simple and profoundly average assistant shepherd. For some reason, he falls in love with Rose at first sight. He s probably the first to ever do so. (42 lines) Murray... Retired wizard or so he says. Murray was actually fired from his previous job as House Wizard. (29 lines) Kaiso...Murray s sidekick. A sarcastic, humorous foil to the wizard. 4 suitors...suitors are at the castle to woo Princess Rose. Little do they know what she is really like. (11 lines among them)
Top 10 things you should know about MT Theatre: 1. Theatre takes commitment. Look at the rehearsal schedule carefully and consider the time requirement of other activities you are involved in. If you cannot put forth time and effort needed during this production, don t audition. 2. Theatre is a team effort. Missing a rehearsal (or performance) lets down the other members of the cast and crew no matter what your role is. 3. Sports. Boys basketball will conflict with winter play rehearsals. Track will not be a conflict for the winter play. 4. Auditioning. You will not be considered for the production without a parent signature and a photo. All students wishing to audition must sign up on the callboard outside Mrs. Azeltine s room. (1521) Students will be called up in random order. Actors should bring their completed audition packet with them to auditions. Crew should turn in their packet to Mrs. Azeltine on or before the audition date. 5. Getting chosen. Remember that being selected for the cast or crew is an honor. Quitting a production after you have been cast, or not fulfilling your commitment, may affect your future involvement in MT Theatre. 6. Working your way in. If you don t get your ideal role or crew position the first time you try out, don t be discouraged. This is a chance to prove yourself. You will find that all positions in theatre are fun! Remember that the director is always watching for a positive attitude, responsibility and commitment to the program.you are always auditioning. 7. Getting cut. While every effort is made to involve as many Timberwolves as possible, cuts are a normal part of theatre. Remember that getting cut is not a reflection of the judges feelings towards you. If you are not selected this time, try out again! It may be that the perfect role is waiting for you in another play. Perseverance is noticed. 8. Mandatory rehearsals and performances. All known absences must be listed on your audition form (Dr. appointments, vacations, prior commitments, family gatherings etc.). All rehearsals during the final two weeks of the production (and the performances themselves) are MANDATORY, unless in the case of illness. No early dismissals are allowed. 9. Communication. If you are ill and cannot make rehearsal, you must let the director know personally by phone or . The office does not notify extracurricular sponsors when a child is called in sick to school. It is your responsibility to communicate with the director. Unexcused absences demonstrate a lack of consideration for other members of the cast and crew and may lead to your dismissal from the play. 10. Tips for audition success. Memorize your lines (see monologues at the end of the packet)! Try to relax and have fun. The judges will be looking for people who are willing to step outside their comfort zone and act a little crazy.
Once Upon a Fairytale By Christopher Burrito Tentative Rehearsal Schedule Important information: The following schedule is tentative and includes all possible dates for rehearsal. Rehearsals typically run Monday Thursday with Friday being set aside for makeup rehearsal in case of snow days. All conflicts must be listed in the audition packet! A detailed rehearsal schedule will be given out at the parent/cast/crew meeting on Monday, January 7th. If you are absent -you are letting down the other members of the cast and crew, no matter your role. All rehearsals in the final two weeks of the production (and the performances themselves) are MANDATORY, unless in the case of illness. No early dismissals are allowed. Week 1 January 7th January 8-11 Week 2 January Week 3 January 21 January Week 4 Jan. 28 Feb. 1 Week 5 February 4 February 5 February 6 February 7 Show Week February 11 February 12 February 13 February 14 February 15 Cast/Crew read through 3:15-5:15 PM PARENT CAST/CREW MEETING 5:30-6:00 PM Blocking Rehearsals 3:15-4:45pm Blocking Rehearsals 3:15-4:45pm No Rehearsal Martin Luther King Jr. Day Blocking Rehearsals 3:15-4:45pm Polishing and run-through rehearsals 3:15-4:45pm Tech Rehearsal 3:15-6:00 PM Tech Rehearsal 3:15 6:00 PM No Rehearsal Parent/Teacher Conferences Dress Rehearsal 7:30 AM 10:30 AM (Breakfast & Rehearsal) Dress Rehearsal 3:15 6:00 PM Elementary Matinee Call time is 12:30, Curtain is at 1:30 pm After School Matinee Call time is 2:40; Curtain is at 3:30 pm Performance - Curtain is 7:00 pm Cast/Crew Party After school Performance - Curtain is 7:00 pm; Strike afterwards
Monologues Please be prepared to perform ONE of the following monologues at auditions. Memorization is expected. Remember... speak extra loud, use lots of expression, be confident, and have fun! Female LIONS AND TIGERS AND MOTHERS I can t believe my mom is making me take this stupid role! I tried out for the witch, not Dorothy! Now, I have to wear pigtails, for crying out loud. (Stomps foot.) There s no way I m wearing bobby socks and a blue-checkered dress. It looks like a table cloth. What idiotic director would look at me and think Dorothy? Can t anyone see that I m more of a gothic black-dresser like the witch? Talk about miscasting! ENVIOUS MERMAID These fins are getting on my nerves! Oh sure, they re great for swimming, but other than that, what good are they? I see the people on the beach. The way their legs are stretched out, soaking up the sun. Nice and dry. Not all water-wrinkly like me! I haven t been totally dry a day in my entire life! How I would love to feel the sand beneath my toes. Feel the crunch of broken seashells beneath my feet. But what do I get? Water, water, and more water! Quite frankly, I think I m getting seasick! Male WHY GROW UP? I don t ever want to be a grown-up. I don t. I mean, look at them! Their faces are all sour and stern and old looking! Why would I ever want to be one of them? They walk around like robot-people. No expression. No smile. No life! What normal teen would ever want to become one of those? No time for hanging out with your friends, listening to music, or going skateboarding! All work and no play! What kind of life is that, I ask you? CANDY BARS FOR SALE I think I ve totally missed the concept of fundraising. I m supposed to sell things to other people to earn money for the class trip - not buy the stupid things myself! I m down fifteen bucks already! Whoever came up with the idea of selling candy bars was crazy! How can they expect me - how can they expect any teenage guy to pack around this box of goodies all day and not eat any! It s pure torture.
