2 Welcome to the auditions for Franklin Civic Operetta Association's production of: Little Shop of Horrors General Information This packet is designed to make the audition process as streamlined as possible for you, the actor. You must return your completed audition form (inside this packet) at the auditions. The meek floral assistant, Seymour Krelborn, stumbles across a new breed of plant he names Audrey II - after his coworker crush. This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down-and-out Krelborn, as long as he keeps feeding it. BLOOD. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II s out of this world origins and intent towards global domination! All auditions take place at the Barrow-Civic Theatre at 1223 Liberty Street in Franklin. This packet is provided so that you may complete your paperwork prior to arrival. However, packets will also be available at the audition. 1. Prepare 32 bars of a piece of your choosing. You must bring the sheet music with you to the audition. 2. Everyone who is auditioning will be asked to cold-read from the script. 3. Dress appropriately for a dancing portion of the audition. 4. Return your completed Audition Form from this packet during auditions. 5. No one will be permitted to observe the audition. 6. Your picture may be taken as part of the audition process. This will be to facilitate casting, costume, and make-up requirements for the show. 7. You may be asked to stay longer after your audition if the director needs to speak to you. 8. Youth under the age of 18 require the signature of a parent/guardian on the audition form.

3 Cast Announcement The cast will be announced as soon as the production staff have reviewed and discussed each applicant. You will be contacted by phone. Casting will be dependent on the audition and the actors conflicts. Rehearsal Time The rehearsal times will be mostly dependent on the schedule of those who are cast, however expect to rehearse Monday through Thursday along with some Saturday s and Sunday s. Weekday rehearsals will be in the evening. Saturday rehearsals may be held at any time of the day, and Sunday rehearsals will be either in the afternoon or in the evening. After the show is cast, we will look at conflict times to determine the best possible times to have members rehearse. As the show evolves, rehearsals will start requiring all actors to be present. Some rehearsals will go longer than scheduled. We ask for your understanding in this part of the creative process. We ask that all actors bring a pencil with them to mark blocking and choreography notes in their scripts. It is expected that all cast will be on time to their scheduled rehearsals. Do not be late. Tardiness disrupts the production. The cast will be responsible for notifying the director, music director, stage manager, or one of the producers if they will be late or absent. Headshots/Publicity Cast members will have their headshots placed in the display cases in front of the theater. Each cast member will be financially responsible for the cost of their headshot. No photos will be on display without approval from the director. There will be a photographer arranged for those who do not yet have a headshot on file with the theater. Each cast member is requested to help promote the production through your local organizations, schools, places of employment, or other civic duties. The production staff has additional opportunities to promote the production and will be looking for volunteers to help. If you have ideas, please let a member of the production staff know. Please, remember that although you may not agree with all of the decisions in the production of the show, you are expected to support the show and its production staff. We would like for this to be a positive experience for everyone. Cast Extras All cast and crew will have the opportunity to purchase memorabilia commemorating the production, such as apparel and cast photo prints. An order form will be provided. This is not a required purchase.

4 Character Descriptions Seymour Krelbourn (Male, 20 s to 30 s) - Our insecure, naïve florist s clerk hero. Above all, he s a sweet and wellmeaning little man. He is not a silly, prat-falling nerd, and therefore should not be played as the hero of a Jerry Lewis film. Range: Tenor (A2 G4) Audrey (Female, 20 s to 30 s) - The bleached-blond, Billie-Dawn like, secret love of Seymour s life. She has poor selfworth and education, but incredibly good looks and a sweet and vulnerable demeanor. Range: Mezzo-Soprano (G#3 D5) Mr. Mushnik (Male, 40 s to 60 s) - Seymour and Audrey s boss. A failure of an East Side florist. He is profit-driven, greedy, and manipulative. He seldom smiles but often sweats. Range: Baritone (G2 F4) Orin Scrivello (Male, 30 s to 40 s) An egotistical dentist with a passion for leather and sadistic tendencies. Thinks like an insurance salesman and talks like a radio announcer. Range: Baritone (G2 G4) Voice of the Plant (Audrey II) (Male, 20 s to 50 s) - An off stage actor. The voice is that of a street-smart, funky, conniving villain. The sound is a cross between Otis Redding, Barry White, and Wolfman Jack. Range: Baritone (G2 G4) Crystal, Ronnette, and Chiffon (Female, 20 s to 30 s) - Three female street urchins who function as participants in the action and as a Greek Chorus outside it. They are young, hip, smart, soulful, and the only people in the whole cast who really know what is going on. Together, they are a to notch 50s 60s girl group like the Chiffons, Ronnettes, Dixie Cups, Supremes, Blossoms, and Crystals. They are our story tellers and very much drive the action. Range: Alto, Mezzo-Soprano, Soprano (Ab3 F5) We may consider a small ensemble of strong singers and actors to appear in two or three numbers in the show to boost the vocal and visual impact of the production. The minor roles of Customer, Radio Announcer, Mr. Bernstein, Mrs. Luce, Skip Snip, Patrick Martin, and Wino 1 are usually all played by the actor playing Orin. Wino 2 is usually played by Audrey II s puppeteer. It is possible we may allocate some of these roles to individual actors who could make up the small ensemble.
