August, 2017 MACBETH SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK DUNCAN AND LADY MACBETH Message From Deb Stanson : Deb, who directed the play with David Tanner reports: The play was a great success, only had to cancel one performance which was on the second Friday evening. Great audiences. Big thank you to an amazing cast and crew. Incredible under the lights at night. Special thank you to Casey Hermanus for the loan of his trailer and truck for the run of the show and to Don Antosh for allowing us to park it in his driveway every night. We attended the show on the first evening and it was absolutely magical under a full moon, shadowy trees and storm brewing in the distance. The lighting complimented the impressive natural backdrop of trees and bushes in the park. Perfect setting for a Macbeth production! The audience (not just us) looked spell bound. All the work and skills that went into costumes, props, sound, special effects including makeup and lighting combined so effectively with the acting talents on stage! (Full disclosure here. I'm not a big Shakespeare fan. In spite of studying Shakespeare at school and university and seeing countless productions of the Bard including Stratford, it is experiencing these ECT summer productions in the park that have really brought them alive for me). Everyone involved with the show deserve congrats for your contribution to such an outstanding evening of magic in the park! You made a challenging play come to life! ***************************************************** INSIDE: ECT Aug. 8 Maggie Parent has been working on finding a home for our beautiful teapot and mushroom and flower board from the spring show: Alice in Wonderland. Thank you to Maggie for arranging for the props to be taken and to be used in a local school production. We are all happy that these amazing creations can be used again and appreciated. Maggie is currently working on finding homes for some vintage clothing from our no longer used racks. See below for pics of some of these gems from the past. Special thank you to Deb Stanson for filling in the vacant publicity slot for this past year and also being president and directing shows (plural). We have a beautiful brochure ready to promote our coming season thanks to Deb with the help of David Tanner and Lisa Thatcher at the R&R Printers in Fergus. (See coming events.) Big thank you to Matt Dawe, Nancy Baker, Deb Stanson, Maggie Parent and Mary Anne Neville for helping to clean up the costume room.. They spent 5 8
hours sorting, boxing and purging. Matt and Deb were thrilled to be able to fill two big racks with costumes for A Christmas Carol. They also had 6 garbage bags and cardboard which Deb took to the dump. Maggie has the purged dresses to see if anyone would be interested in (60's, 70's, 80's) which we have never used. All of the Alice costumes are packed in bins and labeled. Matt took any costumes that were dirty or stained to be cleaned. If you have any plastic hangers you would like to donate, we could use some stronger ones to support some of our heavier costumes. Please contact Mary Anne Neville maneville8@gmail.com 9

St. James Anglican Church in Fergus And then. Corner of Mill Street and Metcalfe in Elora (the old Oddfellow s Hall) ECT rented the upstairs which is now the second floor. Third floor condos were added at a later date when the building was renovated. Read on for ECT s first official home (Warning: no indoor plumbing.) 11
ECT s first home Salem (corner of George and Washington Streets) Although it is an old stone building, it looked a lot different then. We rehearsed on the second floor but the washroom was by the entrance that you see to the right of the picture. Washroom facilities were a bit primitive with no flush or running water so it was more like a Johnny on the Spot. There was a big post in the middle of our rehearsal hall upstairs that presented some challenges for the directing team to actually see the actors or at least all the actors at one time. The first play rehearsed there was Barefoot in the Park by Neil Simon. According to our resident historian, Gary Bryant, it was ECT s first adjudicated play and was performed at the Elora Mill Inn. We have signed our lease for another year at our current space and although we are very happy to have the facilities we have right now with building space, costume and props space and rehearsal etc., we lease from year to year and should always be monitoring opportunities when and if needed for the future. So if you have any ideas, here s the criterion in a nutshell: *A place in Wellington County closer to Fergus or Elora *2500 square feet plus for $1500 all in *Have already investigated basement of Elora Inn where St. John Ambulance used to be, the Fergus Pool building, behind the old Catholic church site in Fergus where the activity centre building was, the old Beatty Building and a space that was for rent in Freshco Plaza Fergus Contact any board member or Jim Monaghan at heartjim@hotmail.com 12
OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR ECT MEMBERS: Need costumes for Halloween and/or Costume Parties? We have some costumes for sale at a nominal price. Below you will see an example of a couple of our vintage costumes. We have more but they are going fast from as far away as Manitoba! So get them while you can. $10..Contact Maggie Parent at maggie66@rogers.com Maggie will have many of these on display at our Annual General Meeting September 17 th at the ECT Workshop. Congratulations to Deb Stanson on being offered and accepting the position of hosting a radio show once a month on Centre Wellington GRAND 101 starting this September. This 20 minute show will include interviews and upcoming events featuring local community theatre groups. If anyone would like to contribute ideas for interviews, Deb would be glad to hear from you. Contact debstanson@gmail.com Does anyone know any (people) /families in the Elora Fergus area who would be interested in hosting a Japanese student (female) who will be attending Centre Wellington District High School this September to June? My niece s company compensates $725 per month. If anyone knows anyone could you let me know? Thanks so much. Connie McTaggart mctaggartkc@gmail.com 13

Clean up and clear out! The Musselman family have been kind enough to allow us use their barn free for storage of our sets and pieces over many decades. We figure it is time to clear up and sort out our belongings there that have accumulated over many many years and many many shows. They came to our rescue to allow us to use their space and been very generous to us ever since and tolerant to our needs. Now we need your help so that we can clear out. The more help the better. Sunday, October 1 st in the morning is the time schedule for the mass clean up and clear out. Please help. If you need more info, please ask anyone on the board but if you could just set that morning aside on your calendars for now we would be very glad to see you there. 14
