3 At the Elora Community Theatre s Annual General Meeting, Don Antosh of Elora was recently presented with the Lis Pieper Memorial Plaque. The recipient is selected by local theatre groups which include Elora Community Theatre, On the Spot Productions, Centre Wellington Children s Theatre, Fergus Grand Theatre Volunteer Group and other users of the Fergus Grand Theatre. After Lis Pieper, a longtime active member of Elora Community Theatre, passed away six years ago, the ECT group established the Lis Pieper Memorial Award. This award was set up to honour those who made outstanding contributions to local theatre in Centre Wellington over the course of several years and to recognize individuals who have exhibited Lis dedication to community theatre. The Lis Pieper Plaque hangs in the front lobby of the Fergus Grand Theatre. Don Antosh was a member of the Fergus Grand Theatre Volunteer executive from , as well as doing the same job before that, since the fall of He acted as House Manager and volunteer coordinator during that time and was instrumental in recruiting many volunteers. Don has been involved, onstage or off, building sets, acting, producing with the following groups: Elora Community Theatre, On the Spot Productions, Vision Productions, Grinder Productions, The Not So Grand Players and has served on the boards of both ECT and the old Theatre on the Grand. In addition Don has, over the years, put in numerous volunteer hours at the theatre building and fixing things, solving problems, and generally getting work done. Don continues to be involved with Elora Community Theatre. Congratulations Don for your continued years of support for the Arts community in Centre Wellington. (submitted by Deb Stanson) 3
4 A Message from the Director of Inlaws Outlaws and other People Stan Jensen In-Laws is cast and rehearsing. Super cast with some first timers with E.C.T. The flu bug has hit some of our cast, but we can t be stopped. Cast is made up of Keith Assoun, Nancy Baker, Dave Beynon, Lewis Beynon, Bianca Bonneau, Dian Borek, Rochelle Eckert, Robert Free, Mark Holloran, Laura Hunter, Mellissa Jakl, Lia Kannemann, Chris Mackay, Mary Anne Neville and Dan Williams. We are rehearsing Sun, Tues & Thurs evenings starting at 7PM. Members are welcome to come and watch. Matt has agreed to do costumes & David Tanner lights/sound. Barb from Guelph worked on this show in Midland a few years ago and has offered to ASM! She was also the one who urged Dian Borek to audition. When Robert is finished with C.C. he has promised to do set design for In- Laws and with Kevin Johnston as Stage Manager and Deb Stanson as Producer, we are truly unstoppable! Hope I didn t miss anyone. By Stan Jensen -Director 4
5 And now some information about our third play of the season! Directed by Acey Kaspar and Zoe Dunbar 5 Is He Dead? A New Comedy by Mark Twain, Adapted by David Ives Is He Dead? was written by Mark Twain in 1898 so it will be 120 years old when we perform it in the Spring of Twain died in 1910 at the age of 74, therefore the play was never produced in his time. This was due to a combination of bad luck, bad timing, and politics. The play is a fictional story is about a talented French painter Jean-Francois Millet who has a close group of friends all quite poor and in debt. In an attempt to solve their money problems, they decide to help Millet fake his own death to increase the value of his art work. All the while, Millet has taken on the new identity of his fictitious twin sister, the Widow Daisy Tillou. In true farce form, there is plenty of action, and more than a fair share of misunderstandings and innuendo, however, is appropriate for all-ages who can follow a story line and understand some thick German, Irish and French accents. Jean Francois Millet was (in real life) one of the most famous 19 th -century European painters in America in Twain s day, and it has been said that his works share a common bond with Twain s own works in that they both share a respect for ordinary people. The original manuscript of Is He Dead? was rediscovered in 2002, and then published a year later. It opened on Broadway 4 years after publication in December of 2007 so was first performed only a short 10 years ago. This is why we bill it as a new comedy by Mark Twain. This play contains 17 characters, but can be performed with actors, depending on the amount of doubling. A couple of the
6 roles only have a brief appearance on stage with no lines, so we will likely end up with actors: 3 young men who can play in their 20 s, 2 young women of similar age to the young men, a slightly older man to play the lead role who doesn t mind crossdressing, plus 3 middle-aged/older men, and 2 middleaged/older women who are about the same age as the older men. We plan to hold auditions in early January of 2018, on Sat/Sun Jan 6 & 7 from 1-4pm, with callbacks on Wednesday, Jan 7pm. Look for reminders & updates closer to the end of the year for audition information. Rehearsals will likely begin in February, and mostly be on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The theatre performances will be on Friday, Saturday & Sunday, May 4,5,6 & 11,12,13, with evening shows on Fridays & Saturdays, plus Sunday matinees. There will be an informal read through of the script at the ECT rehearsal space on Sunday, November 5 th from 11:30-2:00. If interested in showing up to listen or help read, please phone Acey By Acey Kaspar-Director ********************** Introducing Culture Days Cast and Crew
