Introduction I first walked through the doors of the Ephrata Performing Arts Center in the summer of Twenty-seven years later, I feel so proud and grateful to have found an artistic home in this friendly and welcoming community, working with the wonderfully talented actors, designers, directors, musical directors, choreographers and other artists who have also found an artistic home here. Thanks to EPAC s loyal and supportive audiences, we have been able to offer many challenging, unconventional plays and musicals, including the area premieres of so many works that might not have been seen locally if our audiences were not so open to taking chances on the unknown and adventurous. In our 2014 season, we will present a group of exciting shows, some of which are new to our stage while others are time-tested classics definitely worth another look. From the upbeat, modern fun of Legally Blonde to the dark, tuneful and still-provocative Cabaret, from the sweeping romanticism of Sunday the Park With George to the Ed s letter/intro powerhouse drama of Death of a Salesman and One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, EPAC s 2014 offerings will both challenge and entertain. If you are a longtime EPAC family member, please join us for another year of great theatre. If you have never subscribed, please join us for the first time. We look forward to seeing you all. Sincerely, Edward R. Fernandez Artistic Director
YOUNG PERFORMERS EDITION By L. Frank Baum Music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg February 7 23, 2014 Every year EPAC presents a Kids4Kids show, providing great experience for local kids between the ages of 5 and 16. This year s show is everyone s favorite, the fantastical adventures of Dorothy Gale, the Kansas farm girl who wonders what life would be like in the perfect world over the rainbow. Then a twister comes and does take her over the rainbow to a world of witches good and wicked, Munchkins, a scarecrow who longs for a brain, a tin man who wishes for a heart, a cowardly lion in need of some courage, and the wonderful Wizard of Oz himself. Our Kids4Kids shows always prove popular, thanks to the special excitement that the casts bring to their performances. The Wizard of Oz will offer this year s group of young performers an ideal opportunity to discover and to share with audiences the joy of theatre. (The Young Performers Edition, with a running time of approximately one hour, will be used in this production.)
By Dale Wasserman Based on the novel by Ken Kesey March 20 April 5, 2014 Petty criminal Randle McMurphy, tired of his labor duties in prison, fakes insanity so that he can be sent to a state mental institution, imagining that life there will be easier. How wrong he is. Nurse Ratched, in charge of the ward to which McMurphy is assigned, ruthlessly cracks down on any sort of insubordination. And McMurphy specializes in insubordination. The epic battle between McMurphy and Ratched, full of high drama and low comedy, first caught the public s attention when Ken Kesey s novel was published in This dramatization was a major hit Off-Broadway and was the basis for the classic Academy Award-winning movie. Now EPAC will bring this challenging and visceral fable back to vivid life onstage.
Book by James Lapine Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim May 1 17, 2014 With a soaring score by Stephen Sondheim, this rich and romantic tribute to the power of art weaves an enthralling spell. In this Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, we first travel to 19th century Paris, where artist Georges Seurat is creating a painting that will capture for eternity the eccentric people he encounters on a series of Sundays in a park. But his obsessive focus on his art threatens to drive away the woman he loves. The second act brings us to contemporary America, where Seurat s now-elderly daughter tries to help her grandson, an artist like his great-grandfather, to rediscover his artistic identity. Fifteen years ago EPAC was the first theatre in the area to produce this landmark musical, and we are excited to again present this beautiful work.
By John Pielmeier June 12 28, 2014 This gripping psychological thriller is set in a convent, where an angelic young nun has given birth in secret and is accused of having killed the baby. A clash ensues between two strong women a court-appointed psychiatrist, who has been sent to examine the girl, and the convent s Mother Superior, who is determined to protect her. Can either of these women truly help the young nun, who seems to have little understanding of what has happened? This most unconventional murder mystery was a longrunning hit on Broadway and a successful movie. We are sure it will fascinate and haunt you.
LEGALLY Blonde THE MUSICAL Book by Heather Hach Music and Lyrics by Laurence O Keefe and Nell Benjamin Based on the novel by Amanda Brown and the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer motion picture July 24 August 9, 2014 Join us for this delightfully comic and upbeat musical version of the hit movie of the same title. Legally Blonde chronicles the romantic and educational misadventures of young Elle Woods at Harvard Law School, where she has followed the boyfriend who dumped her when he decided it was time to get serious about his life. Elle, who has never had a serious thought, gradually learns and triumphantly demonstrates that being blonde and being smart are not mutually exclusive attributes. Full of charm and breezy satire, the thoroughly vivacious Legally Blonde is sure to take EPAC by pink storm.
By Arthur Miller September 4 20, 2014 EPAC is proud to present Arthur Miller s greatest play the story of the last days of Willy Loman, a veteran salesman who has just gotten along, riding on a smile and a shoeshine, forever seeking the dream of financial security that always eludes him. No longer able to support himself and his devoted wife, his mind slips between the past and the present, as his family watches, unable to help. This timeless story of a family in crisis exerts an extraordinary emotional pull. If you ve never seen this masterpiece, recently named by Entertainment Weekly as the best play of the last 100 years, here is your chance. And if you have previously seen this riveting drama, watching it in our intimate theatre will allow you to feel involved with the Loman family as never before. Death of a Salesman at EPAC will be a theatrical event not to be missed.
Book by Joe Masteroff Based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood Music by John Kander Lyrics by Fred Ebb October 16 November 1, 2014 Few musicals have proven as enduringly popular as this mesmerizing tale set in 1929 Berlin, where Cliff Bradshaw, a young American writer, has come in search of something to write about. He finds what he s looking for in this city full of sexual allure, cultural and political turmoil, and fascinating people, among them the enchanting cabaret singer Sally Bowles, with whom he becomes romantically involved; Fraulein Schneider, his crusty but endearing landlady; Herr Schultz, her kindly Jewish suitor who owns a thriving fruit store; and the Master of Ceremonies of the cabaret where Sally performs, who may be a bit more than he at first seems. This classic show is returning to Broadway this spring, but EPAC will bring this brilliant theatrical gem much closer to home for you.
Book by Thomas Meehan Music by Charles Strouse Lyrics by Martin Charnin Based on the comic strip Little Orphan Annie December 4 20, 2014 Even when things seem tough, better times are just around the corner in this beloved family musical set during the Christmas season. Your kids are sure to love Annie, the feisty orphan girl who escapes the orphanage run by the comically frustrated Miss Hannigan. When the seemingly gruff billionaire Oliver Warbucks decides to adopt Annie, Miss Hannigan plots to thwart Annie s good fortune, but you just know that a happy ending is in store, especially when FDR also gets involved. This joyous show magically sustains a perfect balance by being sophisticated enough for adults to enjoy while presenting a story that is tremendously appealing to the youngsters (and to the youngster in each of us). Heartwarming and funny, Annie will provide the ideal finale to our 2014 season.
