1 Yarm Preparatory School Issue 515 Friday 14th October 2016 Head s Message... Visit the Prep School Pages:- It has been an eventful final week of this half term with much endeavour and industry evident across the school. I have been impressed with the lessons I have been a part of recently and must commend the staff for planning such a super variety of learning experiences. We aim to encourage our pupils to embrace challenge; being presented with the opportunity to do so is a key part of our school and can be seen in both lessons and the rewarding breadth of opportunities on offer. We recognise that it is not always easy to work through a challenging task, take risks in your learning, cope with failure and sometimes struggle to reach a solution. Our teachers aim to carefully and skillfully manage these events as they help to nurture resilience, adaptability and collaboration amongst our pupils. These skills are fundamental to developing our pupils as empowered learners and remain at the forefront of our efforts. I was delighted to see our Year 4 boys represent the school on Thursday in the Yarm U9 Rugby Festival which we hosted at Green Lane. They faced tough opposition and a long afternoon of contact rugby. Spirits were not dampened by showers in the early afternoon and the team progressed though each match and developed together a great deal. They left the field at the end of the day, like all teams, with their heads held high and walking tall. Congratulations to all the boys, thank you to Mr Underwood and the staff who helped run proceedings and to the parents who came along to support this great event. Head s Challenge: : I am underneath the sea and near a bee. When you don't want to be close, you use me. What am I? Bill We had a lovely Y3/4 Music Assembly on Wednesday, with many pupils playing for the first time. I was incredibly proud of them, and it was lovely to see the children being so supportive of their friends. Mrs H Craven Uniform Shop Opening Hours The Uniform shop will be open during the half term holidays as follows:- Tuesday 1pm 4pm Thursday 1pm 4pm

2 Starring in a West End show! I recently visited London. The reason I was in London was that I performed in a musical called The Lazy Ace! It was an amazing experience for me and my family. I had to talk in an American accent for a whole day, it was really annoying. Maya K, 5J In London I performed in a big show called The Lazy Ace. I played the part of Buzz, I took care of the street kids. I stole money from a bank, nobody knew until Ida noticed that I had lots of money! I also performed a solo in Hard Knock Life, it was really good. Lexie T, 5B LastMinute.com Spamalot offer DarlingtonOS are offering tickets for just 10 on the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday Matinee performances. 3 Year 4 at Yorkshire Sculpture Park I really enjoyed the sculpture park. It was jam packed with amazing activities. Overall, my favourite sculpture was the giant tiled octopus. The colours were like an amazing sunset with a few odd blue ones. The legs were twisted and tangled. I loved it and want to go again! Rishika C, 4P I had a really good time at the Sculpture Park and I want to visit it again. I particularly liked looking at the futuristic bird houses. Pixie P, 4S I really enjoyed my day in the Sculpture Park, my favourite part was looking at and discussing the KAWS sculptures. Jake L, 4S The Sculpture Park was amazing! My favourite part was when we made a sculpture of our own. My sculpture was called Harry Tickle the magic juggler. Noah F, 4P At Yorkshire Sculpture Park we had a glorious time. We saw headless sculptures, sound sculpting and many more but my favourite sculpture of them all was a crossbone head sculpture. There was also a horse sculpture that was made of lights. What a joyful time I had. Sally M, 4J My favourite thing at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park was making our own sculpture because we made a really good one, I thought so anyway! I had fun doing it. Ben M, 4J

4 One of the things that made the sculpture park so fabulous and spectacular was the sculpture that could have been close to the twin of the BFG! The only difference was that this one was made of wood. It was the most remarkable trip ever! Annabel C, 4P I liked working as a group to create sculptures, my favourite part of the day was looking at the digital sculpture of a horse. Evie B, 4S I really enjoyed the Yorkshire Sculpture Park because the sculptures were very interesting. Chloe P, 4J The Sculpture Park was a great day out! I like the pixelated horse and the rabbit made out of old stuff. Teddy K, 4P I enjoyed it when we made our own sculptures, my groups was called bunny bunker. All of the sculptures were unique. Joseph B, 4J I enjoyed my visit to Yorkshire Sculpture Park, my favourite activity was sketching the sculptures. Avanish B, 4S The sculptures were very interesting, with the KAWS sculptures being my favourite. The best past of the day was when we created our own sculptures. Alexander C, 4S At the Sculpture Park we had a brilliant time. My favourite part was when we saw some sculptures which looked a lot like Mickey Mouse. The artist was called Brian but he called himself KAWS. Hannah M 4P At Yorkshire Sculpture Park the thing I enjoyed the most was the KAWS sculpture because it looked as if it was dead, he was gigantic. I felt like he was going to fall on me. The person that made it was called Grey World UK, he used to work at Disney Land. Zaara S, 4J It was an interesting day, my favourite part was working in a team to create our own sculptures. Alice W, 4S

5 Year 3 Come And Try An Instrument I liked the flute. I liked it for the sound and for the pieces. It is the best instrument. Mia P, 3H Can you believe that a harp has 47 strings? Jasman S, 3N I like the violin the best. Boaz V, 3H We tried musical instruments. My favourite instrument was the flute because it has a soft sound. Elizabeth N, 3A I tried lots of musical instruments. The flute was the hardest. I quite like the harp; it was very fun, I wish I could do it again. Oliver B, 3H I enjoyed playing all the instruments and my favourite instrument was the harp. Oliver M, 3A I enjoyed all of them. I was surprised that I really enjoyed it because it was my first time. Yara A, 3A We tried different instruments. The choices were cello, violin, harp, recorder and flute. I like the harp because it has a lovely sound. Charlie B, 3A My favourite instrument was the harp because there were loads of strings. Charlie B, 3N My favourite thing was the cello. I loved all of the instruments but I wasn t good at some because it was hard blowing in the mouthpiece. Manya R, 3H I tried some instruments I have never tried before. I enjoyed the flute and the harp. Sam S, 3A Yesterday, I tried doing the harp, cello, flute, clarinet and violin. When you play the harp, a normal harp has 34 strings and a pedal harp has 47 strings. If you want to play the flute, you have to put your lips in a particular shape. Hajra S, 3H
