Lee Lassetter is a multitalented, multifaceted musician. She is organist at Manhattan Beach Community Church and has accompanied the Senior Choir there on four European concert tours. She also teaches older adults in the North Orange County Community College District and teaches individual piano lessons. She has sung in the Camerata Singers of Long Beach for more than fifteen seasons. Lee also played second soprano in the Los Angeles Recorder Orchestra for two years. She says it is always great fun and a real pleasure to conduct OCRS meetings! Lee will be bringing a variety of holiday music a mix of traditional carol arrangements, some early music with a Christmas theme, and some arrangements of fun holiday music. 2 Notice of Voting by Members At the January 2011 Meeting At the OCRS monthly meeting on January 14, 2011, the members will be asked to approve Articles of Association and amended and restated Bylaws for OCRS. We have an important decision to make at the January meeting about becoming a tax-exempt organization for tax purposes. Please be sure to read the notices from our treasurer, Susan Mason, above and on page 3. Now that OCRS newsletter is distributed by (except for the September issue), there are no limits on its length. So we invite you to contribute ads, announcements, articles, even artwork. Letters to the editors are fine too. Do you have instruments you d like to sell? Do you want to form or find a consort? Do you need advice from members on a recorder-related matter? ShaunaRoberts@nasw.org, and we ll put your information in the newsletter. Be sure to check out page 6; we ve included an easy copyright-free Christmas carol for your playing pleasure. Links to free Christmas sheet music are on page 10. Music is no longer being ed because it was a burden for some members boxes. 3 Treasurer s Comments on the Proposed Articles of Association and Bylaws OCRS intends to apply for recognition as a tax-exempt organization for federal and California taxation purposes. As a tax-exempt organization, OCRS will be exempt from paying income tax in years when its revenues exceed its expenses. If the proposed Articles of Association and Bylaws are approved by the members at the January meeting, I will file the federal application soon after the meeting. The proposed Articles of Association will serve as the organizational document that evidences the formation of OCRS. It states the name of OCRS, the date on which it was formed, and its purpose. It also states OCRS s intent to operate in a manner consistent with it Bylaws and with governmental requirements for tax-exempt entities. The proposed Bylaws are based largely on OCRS s current Bylaws, and there are no changes in the members rights. The proposed Bylaws add language that evidences OCRS s intent to operate as a tax-exempt entity. They also include changes from the current Bylaws to update a few of the procedures for conducting OCRS s affairs. For example, the proposed Bylaws allow the members to vote on a matter by mailing in ballots, as well as by voting at a meeting, and they also allow the officers to participate in Board meetings by telephone. Please plan to attend the January meeting. A quorum of the members must be present for the voting to take place. Susan Mason, Treasurer Musical Preludes We invite you or your ensemble to sign up to perform the pre-meeting prelude at 7:20 p.m. during a meeting this year. This is a great opportunity to perform before a friendly audience and show your friends what you are working on. If you sometimes need encouragement to practice between meetings, an upcoming performance is a good motivator. If you would like to perform, please contact Andy Dykes at ADykes@cox.net.
