3 Uppingham Orchestra Course offers the opportunity for experienced adult musicians to tackle an exciting and varied repertoire, and play in a full symphony orchestra. In addition to the twice daily, full orchestra rehearsals with conductor, Peter Robinson, you will receive expert tuition in sectional rehearsals from a team of highly accomplished, experienced professionals and play further works within string, chamber, wind brass orchestras and other chamber groups. Each afternoon various groups meet: string, chamber, wind and brass orchestras. These are directed by some of the course tutors. This might be the chance for you to play your second instrument. Although it is possible to be involved in musical activities from morning to night, there is also time to explore Uppingham and the lovely county of Rutland. Uppingham itself is a small and pretty market town with attractions such as antique shops, art galleries, tea rooms and traditional pubs. Further afield there are many places to visit including Rutland Water and the local towns of Oakham and Stamford. Applications are welcomed from adult musicians of all ages. What matters is that you enjoy music making to a high standard within a supportive and friendly environment. The course directors, conductor and tutors are committed to enabling you to have a truly rewarding week, both musically and socially. Conductor: Peter Robinson Peter Robinson is one of the UK s most experienced and versatile opera conductors. His repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary, with a special interest in Italian opera of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Peter studied music at St John s College, Oxford and began his operatic career as Chorus Master at Glyndebourne, followed by several years as Head of Music Staff and Resident Conductor with The Australian Opera in Sydney. He returned to London to become Assistant Music Director at English National Opera. Recent projects have included his fifteenth consecutive appearance with Opera Holland Park; co-conducting ENO s Marvellous Miller, celebrating Jonathan Miller s productions spanning 40 years at the London Coliseum; conducting the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for the Finals of The Grange Festival International Singing Competition. Peter has worked with most of the major British orchestras. including the LSO, LPO, RPO, Hallé and BBC Concert Orchestra. For television, he has conducted Jonathan Miller s productions of Così fan tutte and The Mikado, and, for Channel 4, The Marriage of Figaro. For eight years he was Artistic Director of British Youth Opera. In addition to his work as a performer, he teaches and coaches singers regularly at the National Opera Studio, the Royal Opera House s Jette Parker Young Artists Programme, and the Guildhall School, as well as the Royal College of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music where he was recently elected Hon ARAM. The course tutors have a wealth of experience, performing within a wide range of the major professional orchestras and chamber groups. In addition they are experienced and enthusiastic teachers. 4 How to apply Minimum standard for wind and brass is Grade 8. For other players the minimum standard is Grade 7. Applicants should be 18 or over, unless accompanied by an appropriate adult. If you wish to apply for a student bursary please contact the Summer School Office by phone or . Otherwise, please apply via Applications should reach Uppingham School by 30 April, 2018 along with the appropriate non-refundable deposit. To ensure a full, balanced orchestra places in some sections of the orchestra are necessarily limited. Acceptance letters will be issued as soon as possible following receipt of deposit and application form. Deposits will be refunded to unsuccessful applicants. The boarding houses are adjacent to one another and are within easy walking distance of the rehearsal rooms and the town centre. The rooms are simply furnished study bedrooms, all with wash basins. Twin rooms are available on request. Shared bathroom facilities are on each floor. There are a small number of single ensuite rooms which will be available for an extra charge and which will be allocated to the first to apply. While it should be possible for everyone who wishes to have a single room, it might be necessary for those on student rates or subsidised rates to share. Applications from course non-participants are welcome on the basis that they share a twin room with a course member. Both boarding houses have kitchen facilities for making hot drinks. They also have comfortable lounge facilities. 5 Writing A Short Story: From Beginning to End Monday 20 Friday 24 August 10.00am 4.00pm 250 Tutor: Bridget Holding The writing process can sometimes feel overwhelming. I n this course, through the writing of a short story or narrative poem, you ll learn a system for chunking down any project into bite-size, do-able pieces. Courses for Adults at Uppingham Summer School Stained Glass Making for Beginners Monday 13 Tuesday 14 August 10.00am pm 175 Tutor: Claire Hart A beginners stained glass course, covering all aspects of design and construction of a stained glass panel. Students will develop a design idea into an accurate pattern, before learning how to cut sheets of coloured and textured glass ready to be leaded together. We will then move onto constructing the lead framework around the glass pieces and solder the panels together. Finally students will be shown the cementing process to finish and strengthen the panels. All materials required will be provided and are included in the cost of the course. You ll choose your idea and start writing. You will be supported to negotiate moments of stuckness and block, to complete the first draft. Moving into the second draft we will consciously apply specific tools to bring passion and power into your story. These will include: emotion, sensory impressions, narrative structure, and dialogue. You ll come away with a beautiful product, of publishable quality. You will feel satisfied and invigorated by the process. This course is suitable for fledgling and experienced writers, and writers of all types of fiction and non-fiction. Please arrive at the first session with three ideas, each of 25 words or less, that could form the basis for a short story or narrative poem of up to 2000 words. Upholstery Monday 13 Friday 17 August 9.30am 4.00pm (with 1 hour for lunch) 250 for 5-day course or 55 per day Tutor: Jo Sutton Bring a piece of furniture to upholster and we will guide you through each stage of the process using traditional techniques and materials. Before the course starts there will be an opportunity to talk to the tutor, Jo Sutton, to discuss your piece, identify what you will need to bring and your aspirations for your furniture. This is a lively course filled with learners both old and new willing to share experiences and learning together in the craft of upholstery.
