2 (Baltimore, Md.) March 1, 2011 Music Director Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) announce the Orchestra s season, the fifth full season under the direction of Maestra Alsop. The upcoming season is a year long celebration of revolutionary women, featuring works by female composers and music that honors or depicts women in various roles throughout history from religious martyr to humanitarian activist. January 2012 marks the 600 th anniversary of the birth of French heroine, legend and martyr Joan of Arc. The BSO commemorates her life with two seminal works: the 1935 masterpiece by Swiss composer Arthur Honegger Jeanne d Arc au Bûcher, a piece that the BSO will also perform at Carnegie Hall, and Richard Einhorn s Voices of Light, composed to accompany the landmark 1928 silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc. The BSO will make its first tour under Marin Alsop and first domestic tour since 2000 (excluding previous Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center engagements) in March The Orchestra will travel to the West Coast to perform at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts (Costa Mesa, Ca.) and the Silva Concert Hall of the Hult Center for the Performing Arts (Eugene, Or.) and give a three day education and performance residency at the Zellerbach Hall presented by CalPerformances of the University of California, Berkeley (Berkeley, Ca.). The Orchestra has a long history as a cultural ambassador for the region and I am pleased to continue and expand that commitment, says BSO Music Director Marin Alsop. Our performance this season at Carnegie Hall and our exciting West Coast tour plans will forge new partnerships and enhance the BSO s reputation on a national scale. Our three day residency at Berkeley highlights the musicians and my passion for youth education and reflects our recent achievements in the creation of programs for adult lifelong learning. The BSO will present two large scale multimedia works: Philip Glass LIFE: A Journey Through Time, paired with photographs by award winning National Geographic photographer Frans Lanting, and Richard Einhorn s Voices of Light inspired by and performed with the silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc. The upcoming concert season also boasts a line up of some of the world s most in demand artists, including Itzhak Perlman as both conductor and soloist pianists André Watts and Leon Fleisher and violinist Hilary Hahn. BSO Celebrates Revolutionary Women Under the dynamic leadership of Music Director Marin Alsop, the BSO has become a leader among American orchestras for its unique programs designed around unified themes of cultural significance and broad appeal. The season recognizes revolutionary women, with BSO Music Director Marin Alsop the first woman to lead a major American orchestra leading the celebration will mark the 600 th anniversary of the birth of Joan of Arc. To pay tribute to this unique historic figure, our season will celebrate outstanding women throughout history, with special emphasis on Joan of Arc through the presentation of a major oratorio for nearly 200 performers by Swiss composer Arthur Honneger, presented both here and at Carnegie Hall, says BSO Music Director Marin Alsop. Our regional celebration will also include the silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc by Carl Theodor Dreyer with live accompaniment by the BSO, and a tribute to fearless leader Harriet Tubman through a newly written work by James Lee III. We are uniquely positioned to celebrate the contributions of extraordinary women and their legacy provides an indelible example of heroism that affects us all male and female. A major project and the centerpiece of the BSO s upcoming season is a semi staged performance of Arthur Honegger s Jeanne d Arc au Bûcher ( Joan of Arc at the Stake ), performed in Baltimore on November Season Announcement Page 2

3 18. The BSO will then take the project to Carnegie Hall on November 19 th this work s first Carnegie performance since Honegger s dramatic 1935 French oratorio is relatively unknown (with no U.S. performances since 2004) and tells the story of Joan of Arc, the peasant girl who heard the voices of saints telling her to lead France s army to victory. James Robinson, who previously collaborated with Marin Alsop and the BSO for Bernstein s Mass in 2008, will direct the BSO s semi staged version (with English supertitles). Guest choirs will include the Morgan State University Choir, Peabody Hopkins Chorus and the Peabody Children s Choir, both frequent BSO partners from within the Baltimore community. Also honoring Joan of Arc s legacy, the BSO will present a multimedia performance of Richard Einhorn s Voices of Light on March 2 4 in Baltimore and North Bethesda, accompanied by the work s original inspiration, the extraordinary 1928 silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc by Carl Theodor Dreyer, in partnership with the Pacific Film Archive (based at the U.C. Berkeley campus). Einhorn s work is an opera/oratorio for voices and instrumental ensemble described by the composer as a patchwork of visions, fantasies, and reflections assembled from various ancient sources, notably the writings of medieval female mystics representing the spiritual, political, and metaphorical womb in which Joan was conceived. The BSO, conducted by Alsop, will be joined by the Baltimore Choral Arts Society to present this rarely performed work in its entirety. This work is also part of the West Coast Tour repertoire. On September 23 25, the Orchestra performs the BSO commission and world premiere Chuphshah! Harriet s Drive to Canaan by Baltimore based composer James Lee III, which chronicles the bold and selfless acts of Harriet Tubman. On February 23 26, the BSO will perform James MacMillan s The Confession of Isobel Gowdie. Accused as a witch in 17 th century Scotland, Gowdie s infamous detailed confession and subsequent burning receives a hair raising musical re telling. On the same program, the BSO recognizes another untamed spirit that of Bizet s Carmen. The BSO will perform Sarasate s virtuosic violin Fantasy on Bizet s Carmen, performed by BSO Associate Concertmaster Madeline Adkins. On March in Baltimore and North Bethesda, the BSO pairs Aaron Copland s Fanfare for the Common Man with Joan Tower s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman. Also on that program is Jennifer Higdon s Percussion Concerto, featuring Colin Currie. This program will also be performed as part of the BSO s West Coast tour. This season, the BSO features five female performers making their BSO debuts: violinist Arabella Steinbacher, pianists Olga Kern and Lise de la Salle and sopranos Joyce El Khoury and Layla Claire and an impressive roster of female artists that also includes violinists Hilary Hahn and Nadja Salerno Sonnenberg, mezzo sopranos Susan Platts and Mary Phillips, cellist Alisa Weilerstein and Broadway star Judy McLane. BSO: From Coast to Coast This season, the BSO strengthens old and forges new partnerships from Coast to Coast. This project marks the BSO s fourth appearance during Maestra Alsop s tenure at New York City s prestigious Carnegie Hall. BSO Continues the Tradition of Family Holiday Programming Baltimore audiences have built a tradition of giving the gift of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra to their loved ones during the Holiday season. In December, the BSO continues old traditions and begins new ones with two festive programs: On December 2 3, Edward Polochick leads the BSO and the Concert Artists of Baltimore Symphonic Chorale in Handel s beloved oratorio, Messiah, led from behind the harpsichord as Handel would have performed the work. This popular performing troupe has performed to sold out concert halls the past two BSO seasons. The Baltimore Sun praised the BSO s Cirque program in March 2010, Thereʹs a lot of talk about breaking down barriers in classical music. This imaginative venture actually did that, and with a panache that whets the appetite for whatʹs next under the BSOʹs inviting tent. Cirque artists include world record holders and gold medal winners of international competitions. Among the shows highlights, Jaroslaw Marciniak and Dariusz Wronski, former Polish national hand balancing champions, perform feats of balance and strength that recently gained national exposure on the popular TV program America s Got Talent.
