1 COASTAL SYMPHONY OF GEORGIA / 1 FEBRUARY 2017 Experience the Excitement! APRIL 2017 The President s Corner As Spring arrives in the Golden Isles and the beauty of the Terry Readdick Piano Recital still resonates in our ears, we patrons of the Coastal Symphony of Georgia look forward to the season finale on April 10 th featuring the strong, emotional works of Verdi, Wagner, and Mahler. The building crescendo of our journey through the Romantic period will reach its climax with Mahler s Symphony No. 1, Titan, a composition of the late 19 th century that foreshadowed the dawn of Modernism in the 20 th. We applaud Maestro Luis Haza, Music Director and Conductor, and offer kudos to the fine musicians under his direction for this wonderful season and the most splendid performances yet! The rave reviews for New Frontiers, our third concert featuring Dvorak s Symphony No. 9 From the New World, are still pouring in. With the finale close at hand, the excitement for the Season is already beginning to build. Once again this year, we were fully subscribed, so we encourage everyone to purchase your season tickets now to ensure that you will continue to enjoy the Symphony s outstanding performances when we return in the fall. The new Season Brochure will be in your mailbox soon. You may also use the order form that appears on page 7. As you know, it is rare for a symphony of the quality and professionalism of the Coastal Symphony of Georgia to exist within a community the size of ours. Without you -- our patrons, corporate and individual sponsors, advertisers, donors and supporters -- the Symphony could not exist here, either. The generosity of this community makes the Symphony possible. We thank you and ask for your continued support and generosity at the highest level possible to boost the Symphony along its trajectory of excellence from Great to Greater! In addition to season subscriptions, we welcome all additional contributions, large or small, that you might wish to make as you renew your subscriptions. 2 COASTAL SYMPHONY OF GEORGIA / 2 APRIL 2017 Following intermission, Gustav Mahler s Symphony No. 1 in D Major, Titan, incorporates music from previous works that went through several iterations before its final form was published in Initially, the piece was a poorly received symphonic poem, influenced by German writer Jean Paul s novel, Titan. The symphony moves from youthful dreams, ambition, and success to the burial of illusions in much the same way the story line of the novel progresses. It is scored for a large orchestra, with several instruments used only in the expansive, stormy final movement. Experience Powerful Emotions as the orchestra closes the season with stirring music displaying feelings of fate, destiny, sadness, love, and triumph. Translated as The Power of Fate or The Force of Destiny, Verdi s overture opens with a musical theme of fate introduced in a short motif or musical idea in the brass which then is repeated throughout the piece. Grandeur and humanity are reflected in Siegfried s Funeral March taken from Richard Wagner s musical drama Gotterdammerung or Twilight of the Gods. A rich, haunting, dark feeling pervades the opening, but later the music becomes a hopeful, triumphant march. Grand brass and percussion return us to a more somber feeling and close of the march which represents the heart of the Ring Cycle of four operas written by Wagner. Mahler would become known as a late Romantic composer who acted as a bridge between the 19 th Century Austro-German tradition and the modernism of the early 20 th Century. His symphony provides a fitting finale to our season, which began with Beethoven s music that moved Classical music into the robust Romantic period, a season representing virtually a century of change in the musical repertoire.
