1 CELEBRATING GHC The Reeder Please visit us on the Internet at If you have the sheet music the key can be determined by the sharps or flats shown at the beginning of each line of the song. Any note marked with a sharp or flat symbol will be played as a sharp or flat throughout the song unless it is preceded with a natural sign which cancels the sharp or flat for that measure only. The key signatures are always written in the same progression. The key of C to which most of our chromatic harmonicas are tuned has no sharps or flats. The key of G has one sharp, F#. The key of D is next. It has two sharps, F# and C#. The key of A has three sharps, F#, C# and G#. The key of E has four sharps, F#, C#, G# and D#. The key of B has five sharps, F#, C#, G#, D# and A#. The key of F# has six sharps, F#, C#, G#, D#, A# and E#. The key of C# has seven sharps, F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, E#, and B#. Note that E# and B# are really F and C. The keys with sharps are always written in this order. For example the key of E will have four sharps and they will be shown in the order, F#, C#, G#, and D#. So we can now determine which key by simply looking at the key signature. A quick way to determine the keys which have sharps is to look at the last sharp and the next note will be the key. For example if the last sharp in the key signature is C# then the key will be D. If the last sharp is G#, the key will be A and so on. Now look at the keys which are determined by flats. The same rule applies--they are always written in the same order. The first key with one flat, Bb, is News and Views by Jay Hotze If you don t have a music theory background you might find it challenging to determine the key of a piece of music. Your editor has received two articles on the subject of determining the key of a song: the one featured this issue was provided by our President, Bill Dulin and next issue we will feaure an article provided by our Director of Music, Frank Davis. In addition, I will include a chart that was given to me when I first joined the GHC which complements Bill s article. MUSIC NOTES WHAT KEY IS IT? 1 the key of F. The next key is Bb and it has two flats, Bb and Eb. The next key is Eb and is has three flats, Bb, Eb and Ab. Then comes the key of Ab with four flats, Bb, Eb, Ab and Db. Next is Db with five flats, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db and Gb. Again, all of the flats have been used so for the last two keys, Gb and Cb are used which are really E and B. Gb has six flats, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb and Cb. Cb has seven flats, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Cb and Fb. The short cut to determine the key with sharps (the next note) can t be used with flats but there is an easy method. The previous note in the key signature is the key of the song. For example, the key of Eb has three flats, Bb, Eb and Ab. If the key has four flats, Bb, Eb, Ab and Db, the key is Ab. How do you determine the key if you don t have the written music? You can ask Rich Krueger or me or someone experienced. How do we know? The last note of most songs is the same as the key. For example if the songs ends on C the key will be C. So using your harmonica, play the last note of the song and determine which note it is. This doesn t work for minor keys. More about minor keys later. Music is written in different keys to fit a specific musical instrument or a specific voice. Also some songs just sound better in a particular key. It is tempting to play in only one key with the harmonica since most are made in the key of C. It would be very boring indeed if we always played the same notes in the same key.
2 THE GHC REEDER is a bimonthly publication of the Gateway Harmonica Club, Inc. of St. Louis, Missouri, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and advancement of the harmonica. 3 My dear GHC members: In years past I began collecting harmonicas through competitive bidding on E-bay and trades within the club with other members. Alas, in life s cycle. there is a time for acquisitions and a time for disposition. I have arrived at the latter. I have four Hohner CX-12 harmonicas won on E-bay via a bidding technique known as sharp shooting. I offer them to club members at my cost, which are prices going back approximately eight years. All are in excellent condition, have been cleaned and sanitized, and are ready to play. The reed plates are interchangeable with the plates on the popular WH-12 Golden Butterfly widely played by club members, and the combs are interchangeable, requiring a simple five-minute modification to the CX-12 comb. For sale are: 1 CX-12 key of C - $ CX-12 key of tenor C - $88.00 each 1 CX-12 Jaz Harp, key of C - $ A discount seller in Dayton, Ohio, Harp House, prices these harmonicas new at: CX-12 key of C - $ (Reg. price is $317.00) CX-12 key of tenor C - $ (Reg. price is $318.00) CX-12 Jazz Harp - $ (Reg. price is $573.00) Units not sold within the club will go to auction. PICNIC REMINDER The annual GHC picnic will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at the usual location of Shady Springs Park, 3888 Shady Springs Lane, St. Peters, MO :00 PM to 5:00 PM Ralph Barber 3
4 A from Helen May / June Gateway Harmonica Club has been in the news recently and I hope everyone had a chance to see Buddy, Jessie, Jim and Frank on Channel 2. A very nice presentation of the Cohan Melodies was played. If you have not joined us for rehearsal lately then you are missing out on meeting over seven new members. Our membership is growing as is the interest for learning to play the harmonica. New music has been introduced at our practice sessions and eventually will be worked into our performance program. Our last few performances included Hello Dolly and Easter Parade. The sing along for the audiences has been very popular. Our gigs are always so rewarding and have put smiles on many faces of those individuals in the audience. Buddy, Jessie, Mark and Ernie continue to offer classes at the junior colleges and many of the classes have reached the maximum enrollment. Thanks to the team for all their hard work. If you know of anyone wanting to take the classes they are offered in the St Louis Community College catalogue which was recently sent via the mail. The class is only three sessions and is very reasonable. You can still attend SPAH and information is on the webpage should you wish more information. A large delegation is going from St Louis. Please note that those who perform at the gigs will change to our summer uniforms as of May 1, 2017: the white polo shirts with the GHC logo and black slacks.
