Dear Music Lover, March 2011 Continuing to live into our Sweet Sixteen season, SCH is alive with vigor and new growth, even as we reflect on where we have come in such a short lifespan. Through performance (three full-fledged ensembles!), education and outreach, and increasingly through pro-active interaction with composers, we continue to define our unique contribution to the world both locally and globally, seeking always to transcend even our own expectations! An internal, personal freedom the kind that transcends circumstances is what we explore together today in Journey of the Soul. We have found ourselves engaging in ever-deepening ways with all that life brings us, through working with this music and the marvelous texts represented. It is our sincere hope we might all be moved in some way toward enhanced personal freedom, through understanding that we share common elements of the human journey, and so are never alone. Political and social freedom, through the remarkable story of the Estonian people s stand against Soviet invation, using song as their primary vehicle (!), is our focus as we look at the music of this tiny nation in May. We are privileged to weave portions of the documentary film The Singing Revolution into this final concert set of our sixteenth season. And we are so excited to have with us the singers of the North Jersey Homeschool Association Choir with us in those events. Please check the back of this program booklet for other dates to put in your calendar. If you ve not seen the Schola Sings Solo show this year (or even if you have!), you have one more opportunity. And please note that SCH will be offering an opportunity for singing, sharing, healing and remembering during the afternoon and evening of Sunday, September 11 th. I hope you ll seek out some of us following today s performance, and let us know of your experience. You might even talk the composer into autographing your program. Yours, in great music! 6 6 About Our Featured Composer Arkansas-born composer, Dr. Wayne Eastwood, wrote his first song when he was ten years old, the sole fruit born of a brief but embrangled one-way love affair with his fourth-grade teacher. Allin-all, he thought the whole thing pretty easy work, so he spent his formative years teaching himself music theory, vocal production, and composition. Unfortunately, on arriving at university, he found that most of his self-taught skills had to be untaught, a process that left him with severe emotional scars and his professors with a few more tangible ones. Nonetheless, his teachers cleaned him up enough to get through school without embarrassing anybody excessively and with a portfolio sufficient to interest Ned Rorem in tutoring him. Finding school easier than working for a living, Eastwood returned regularly to university studies, usually with a new batch of songs dedicated to yet another fourth-grade teacher. He holds an undergraduate degree in voice, a master s degree in composition, and a Ph.D. in conducting from the College of Music at the University of North Texas. He would have taken more degrees, but the university changed the locks on the doors and told him to get a life. Degree in hand, Dr. Eastwood then worked as a conductor, teacher, truck driver, singer, book editor, computer programmer, and a composer of commercial jingles. Remember that time in the past when you ve had a really bad tune stuck in your head for days? He s truly sorry about that. He has worked as the Director of Choral Activities for universities in Texas and Idaho, taught graduate courses in California and Ohio, and spent a term at the University of Łodz, Poland, lecturing on the dangers of American music. Dr. Eastwood is married to a pastor who still hopes she can help redeem his soul, and composes in an 1885 Victorian held together by paint and inertia. His music appears regularly in the programs of university choruses and standing choirs across the country. The Philippine-based Ateneo Chamber Singers sang a set of his choral works on their recent world tour, to outstanding reviews and a few screams for diplomatic immunity. He collects Pogo first editions, vintage LPs, and patterned paper towels that he stuffs between the cracks in the walls of his house. He knows (but is not telling) a plethora of occult secrets about some East-coast conductors, and Homeland Security, so far as is known, has not identified him as a person of interest.

About our Featured Composer Program The Featured Composer Series, now in its second season, seeks to raise awareness of a selected composer by performing that individual s work throughout the season. By weaving a number of works into the concert repertoire and marketing the composer with each performance, SCH hopes to generate positive exposure that compels publishers and other ensembles to program the composer s works. This season s Featured Composer is Dr. Wayne Eastwood. Featured compositions this season are: ɵɵ A Love Poem in July, written in the summer of 2010 for Deborah Simpkin King, premiered November 6 on the Schola Sings Solo recital ɵɵ Come Away to the Skies (Exultation), premiered on the December 4 and 5 concerts ɵ ɵ Final Litany, part of our Journey of the Soul concerts on March 19 and 20, 2011 You can make a difference! We are delighted that you attend and enjoy our concerts. These musical offerings and our educational programs require a considerable amount of effort and funding. We are fortunate that more than half of Schola Cantorum on Hudson s annual operating budget comes from generous gifts from people like you! We invite you to join us by contributing to our Annual Fund. In this way, you will help us in continuing to provide the highest quality choral and educational programs to Hudson County, New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area. How do you make a gift to SCH? Annual Fund envelopes are available at the reception area. Simply fill one out and include a check made payable to Schola Cantorum on Hudson. You can also make a donation online at by following the Make a Donation link on the lefthand side of the page, or mail your tax-deductible gift to: Schola Cantorum on Hudson P.O. 8 About Schola Cantorum on Hudson Schola Cantorum on Hudson was founded as an independent choral ensemble in 1995, with a mission of enriching the lives of the diverse New Jersey and New York communities with the highest quality of choral music. The ensemble has grown dynamically to embrace a mission of deepening and enlivening the human spirit by offering a passionate musical experience with innovative programming over a wide variety of musical styles, and representing all aspects of the vocal art. Schola regularly premieres new choral works and achieves high performance standards through a robust music education program. Its members a mix of active professionals and wellqualified amateurs supported by a dedicated Board and staff, believe that widespread cultural impact is possible through impassioned artistic leadership. In addition to its busy concert season, SCH participates in a variety of community events, and is increasingly performing concerts beyond the New York/New Jersey metro area. Our week as choir in residence for Evensong at Canterbury Cathedral in July of 2010 is but one recent example. The individual members of SCH have been drawn together by a shared love of great choral music and by a dedication to the highest standard of performance of that repertoire. Schola Cantorum on Hudson is committed not only to high-quality performance, but also to making a profound impact on both its immediate and expanded communities through educational offerings. Examples of the high-quality educational programs for the community include the Cantorum Young Singers, Choral Scholar Programs, and Community Engagement Programs. Other offerings include classes in advanced vocal technique and presentation, assertive sightsinging and ensemble skills, and the innovative Member Inreach program. The international initiative, Project : Encore of Schola Cantorum on Hudson, launched in 2009, puts major muscle behind support for lively choral compositions and their accessibility to conductors seeking to program new works. Schola Cantorum on Hudson is accredited by the State of New Jersey as a provider of Professional Development Credits for New Jersey public school teachers who participate in Schola's performance and educational offerings. More information about these educational initiatves may be found at ScholaOnHudson.org by following the Education link. 8

About Our Artistic Director Dr. Deborah Simpkin King is a choral and vocal performer and educator, working primarily in the northern New Jersey and Manhattan area. As Artistic Director and Founder of Schola Cantorum on Hudson, and Founder of the international initiative in support of new choral music, Project : Encore, she is known for creative programming and the premiering of new compositions. She is the owner of voice and conducting studios based in New Jersey, and is a frequent adjudicator and workshop clinician. Dr. King is known for building church music programs recognized for their excellence and passion in worship leadership, and has served on the faculties of several colleges and universities. She also works as a consultant on issues relating to the development of music programs in churches. She has coordinated the Annual High School Choral Festival for the New Jersey Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association since 1995, having served on the state board of directors since Dr. King s experiences as a vocal performer, writer and editor add to her understanding of the demands on choral singers. The thread of continuity that connects Dr. King s various activities is her fundamental belief that music is a gift that contains the potential for profound impact on the human spirit, which can nurture all of us throughout our lives. It is this perspective that informs all of her activities, from polished performances to vigorous insistence on the development of fluency in sight singing. Dr. King has two sons: Patrick Daniel, a Producer with Comedy Central s The Daily Show; and Michael Alexander, who is currently in his second year of seminary training in Dallas, where he resides with his wife, Hannah. 9

It is our hope that this will become a de facto indication of high quality as PROJECT : ENCORE continues to grow. You will notice the symbol used as a footnote mark for two of our Journey of the Soul concert works, Final and Do Not Stand At My Grave and Notes from Dr. King on PROJECT : ENCORE Our interest in helping the many wonderful choral compositions we have been honored to premiere take flight in the choral repertoire, via performances beyond our own, was the genesis of our searchable database, which we proudly call PROJECT : ENCORE. These works are ɵɵ Premiered, but not yet significantly performed beyond that ɵɵ Submitted, then vetted by a prestigious pool of conductors ɵɵ Uploaded (if approved) into the PROJECT : ENCORE database ɵɵ Available for discovery by conductors and organizations internationally! Each new success story, of a composition found and programmed through PROJECT : ENCORE, convinces us anew that the symbolism underlying our logo is just right: The butterfly: symbol throughout the ages of rebirth, and a symbol for the soul interwoven with element of music notation; suggesting repeat performances 10

Program I Morning Freshness Birth Worldly ways as yet unknown. Possibility born only of instinct opening, doors upon doors. My Lord, What a Mornin Dawn My Lord, what a mornin My Lord, what a mornin Oh my Lord, what a mornin When de stars begin to fall. From the door s soft opening, and the day s first sigh, filling the room, I see before me a life of door, one opening on another: Doors upon doors, and doors upon doors, And sighs, sighs upon sighs, sighs upon sighs Done quit all my worldly ways, Done quit all my worldly ways, Done quit all my worldly ways, Join that heavenly band. Harry T. Burleigh Eric William Barnum Text by Robert Bode Rising in a tide of mornings, rising, rising Until that final sigh, And the last morning, and the last holy breath, Whispering, this, this, this. 12

II Possibility Interrupted Final Litany by Dr. Wayne Eastwood Cantata for Soprano, Bass, Mixed Chorus, Clarinet, Piano, Timpani and Cello Featuring Gilberto Gómez, baritone Laura Greenwald-Strom, Caroline L. Sargent, and Zuzanna Ducka, sopranos; Mari Schindele and Cara Pernas, alto; Joseph Martin-Stowe, tenor; Ryan LaBoy, baritone, and Don Strangfeld, bass Joyce Nestle, Judge; Don Strangfeld, Warden Movements 1 and 14 provide the reality bookends of the external drama: the prisoner is convicted and sentenced; the convict is put to death. In movements 2 13, we experience vignettes along the journey of life and death, ego and shadow integration, remorse and repentance. Movements call all of us as collective members of the human family, into the journey displayed so dramatically in these troubled lives beck ning toward the light. Texts set in this style are those of various inmates, identified by initials. 1. Introduction Judge: The defendant will rise It is the judgment of this court that you be taken from here and that, at an appointed time and at an appointed place, you be put to death. May God have mercy on your This work is part of Project : Encore of Schola Cantorum on Hudson. Project : Encore works have been premiered, and then evaluated via blind adjudication by prestigious conductors as being works of excellent quality. The online, searchable database is located at: 13

2. Stir Up Thy Power Incarceration Inmate speaks to psycho/spiritual incarceration. In the tradition of the Greek chorus, ensemble voices carry the overlay message of spiritual freedom. Metrically independent lines convey the unpredictable movement of the Spirit bringing redemption. Deliverance from incarceration arrives with increasing fullness in triple meter, and a traditional plagal Amen. Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean. Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. (Psalm 51 : 7) You can not take a man and lock him away and call him prisoner, for man was born a prisoner unto himself You can not make a prisoner out of me by locking me away I am already a prisoner within myself Stir up thy power, O Lord, and with great might come upon us; I was born a prisoner, and I will die a prisoner, without pity, without reprieve And because we are sorely hindered by our sins, I will die. Sorry. Regret running out my soul, I will die a prisoner. Let Thy bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us. What but death will break these chains and set me free? K.E., executed January 12, 1994 Amen. (Collect for the Third Sunday of Advent, BCP) 3. In One Life (A.M.B.) Despair: trouble cancels good. Is it self-pity, or the beginnings of examination? The astute auditor will note that the motif of the clarinet and bass solo lines is the exact inversion of that set to Stir up thy power, in the previous movement. In one life, as sorrows rise, drowns ev ry good and noble deed; Into one life pale troubles fall, the tired and putrefying leaves of dying trees. 14

4. Weeping Under a Naked Tree (R.Z.)* Tears, loss, seemingly endless sameness is painted in the piano ostinato. Clarinet/piano 7-measure passacaglia (a musical form often associated with a dirge) is interrupted for a mere five measures of hopeful reaching Godward. Weeping under a naked tree, casting my tears upon last summer s leaves. My eyes, aged and blurred; footsteps wander in pointless pattern. Fingers, trembling, reach Godward. Arms, spindly and brittle, futile rage against a winter sky. Weeeping under a naked tree. * After fourteen years on Death Row, R.Z. was released from prison in 1994, the state reluctantly admitting that it had tried the wrong man. 5. Who Are the Two of Us? (D.S.) Internal Duality That which I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. St. Paul; Romans 7 : 15 Crafted from a whole-tone scale, over a C# cello ostinato, with unstably-pulsating meter; searching ascending cello scale leading directly into the internal dialogue of mvt. 6. Who are the two of us, this man beside myself and me? the man I know in one I ve never known, who are you? who are we? Two minds at war with themselves, Two hearts untruly joined, With me on this hand and you on the other, the sum made less by the whole. Who are the two of us, this man beside myself and me? the man I know in one I ve never known, who are you? who are we? 6. I m Nobody, Who are You? (after Emily Dickinson) Note the two-part canon carried by altos and tenors, a whole-tone and a half note apart, surrounded by the plain triads in long notes from sopranos and basses. The question remains unanswered I m Nobody! Who are you? Are you Nobody too? Then there s a pair of us? How dreary to be Somebody! Don t tell! They d banish us, you know! I m Nobody! Who are you? 15

7. My Family Experience of God The hymn text is one of the earliest Christian hymns (ca. 200 AD) and celebrates the transformation of humanity through God s Holy Spirit. The Aeolian tune (which appears again in mvt 12) is named Kedron, for the brook between jerusalem and the Mount of Olives. Interestingly, the first known text linked to it was Thou man of grief remember me. The opening clarinet line prefigures the later-sung Benedictus, over which the clarient plays Kedron. Sunset to sunrise changes now, My family never went to church much. The old man said that religion was a bad waste of a good Sunday. Momma, she d sneak off once in a while and leave some blackberry jam on the preacher s porch, but mostly we just kept to ourselves For God doth make His world anew. On the Redeemer s thorn-crown d brow the wonders of that dawn we view. (Kedron; St. Clement of Alexandria, c200 AD) I got religion myself one summer. I d have kept it too, cept Gramma told me I d got the wrong kind and was goin straight to hell if I didn t give it back. I never did feel God again Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. (Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord.) From then on, if somethin good happened, I never told Gramma. She was happier bein sad. (A.W.) 8. Some Keep the Sabbath (Emily Dickinson) Composer s note: a hoedown. Conductor s note: in continually and unpredictably fluctuating 5/8 meter! (none of the above typically related to keeping the Sabbath! ) Some keep the Sabbath going to church. I keep it staying at home, with a bobolink for a choirster, and an orchard for a dome. God preaches a noted clergyman And the sermon is never long, so instead of getting to Heaven at last, I m going all along. Some keep the Sabbath in surplice; I just wear my wings. And instead of tolling the bell for church, our little sexton sings. 16

9. Lost (G.H.) Insanity He lost it while you were counting coins and houses, While your purposeless lovers lie, While your fruitless apple trees die at the merciless hungry wind, While raging hands defiled the sod, While you sang sweetly to your God, While rude hands had dragged him over cat, over slave, over freeman, Over town, over shadow, over talk, over pain, over rock, and mountain! He lost it during the dark, gray, night of wonder, While you were at home enjoying your pipe. 10. Blood to Wash (K.E. See No. 2. He was excuted for this double murder.) Blood to wash, blood to defile Blood to save, blood to condemn, Scarlet drops of crimson wine, Fill the chalice for this sacrifice: On this claret cup to dine, so to lose my life, Paradise their souls to win. Like pigment ground from Satan s arts the stains from two one-beating hearts Baptise my hands but not my sin. Blood to wash, blood to defile, Blood to save, blood blood blood 17

Broken Open I pray that each one of us stays awake as we fall that we choose to go into the abyss willingly and that our fall is cushioned by faith faith that at the bottom we will be caught and taught and turned toward the light. If we can stay awake when our lives are changing, secrets will be revealed to us secrets about ourselves, about the nature of life, and about the eternal source of happiness and peace that is always available, always renewable, already within us. Elizabeth Lesser 11. I Died for Beauty (Emily Dickinson; truncated) Composer s note: This is the final coming to terms for the prisoner. I died for Beauty but was scarce adjusted in the tomb, When one who died for Truth was lain in an adjoining room. He questioned softly why I failed? For Beauty, I replied. And I, for Truth. And so as kinsmen met a-night, we talked between the rooms, Until the moss had reached our lips, and covered up our names. 18

12. Were I To Measure Regret Composer s note: The point is that the prisoner is freed by the truth. He wants those who still hurt to know that their anger is now misspent. He hopes that all can join now in releasing him and their hate not with mercy, but with their own encounters with the truth. Listen for the opening cello motif, which is that of mvt 2, Stir up thy power. Judge: The defendant will rise to make his statement. Were I to measure regret, what container would be sufficient to hold it or display it here? Dare I ask for mercy when I have no merit of it? How does mercy earned maintain any quality of mercy? It is my meritlessness which cancels fear of those who can end my life and frees me to fear the one who is able to forgive my soul. Here in o erwhelming final strife, the Lord of Life hath victory, And sin is slain, and death brings life, And sons of earth hold heav n in fee. (Kedron; St. Clement of Alexandria, c200 AD) The one who forgives has already worked that mystery, though I have yet to understand or fully accept it. I pray you can accept my state of forgiveness, adding it to that portion which is yours as well: That my death may mean new life for both of us. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. 13. Jesus, All My Gladness (Jesu, meine Freude. Johann Crüger. Text from Johan Franck.) Composer s note: The chorale serves as commentary to mvt. 12. Soft, thick, sonorous, but not somber. Jesus, all my gladness, my repose in sadness, Jesus, heav n to me: Ah, my heart long plaineth, Ah, my spirit straineth, Longing after thee! Thine I am, O holy lamb; Only where thou art is pleasure, You alone I treasure. 19

14. Benedictus Spoken text from eye-witness accounts. Warden (reading): It is the judgment of this court that, at this appointed time and at this appointed place, you be put to death. May God have mercy on your soul. Benedictus (to the prisoner): After we walk down two long corridors, you will find your wife waiting to say goodbye. Benedictus then, through one more door and we re there. Excuse me if I seem nervous. I ve never done this before. Benedictus qui venit, qui venit That s OK, Warden. Neither have I. in nomine Domini. Amen. 20

The final walk 15. Finale: Solemn Drums (Emily Dickinson) (Solemn drums to hear, solemn drums, drums, the drums ) Inconceivably solemn, things so gay Pierce by the very Press of Imagery Their far Parades halt on the eye With a mute Pomp A pleading Pageantry Flags are a brave sight But no true Eye Ever went by One Steadily Music s triumphant But the fine Ear Aches with delight The Drums to hear. 16. Finale: Good Morning, Midnight (Emily Dickinson) Good morning Midnight I m coming Home Day got tired of Me How could I of Him? I can look can t I When the East is Red? The Hills have a way then That puts the Heart abroad Sunshine was a sweet place I like to stay But Morn didn t want me now So Goodnight Day! You are not so fair Midnight I chose Day But please take a little Girl He turned away! 17. Finale: Feet Small As Mine (Emily Dickinson) Composer s note: Finally the Litany motif is fulfilled. Feet, small as mine have marched in revolution, Small hands have hoisted them, Feet, small as mine have marched in witness, Firm to drum, when speech went numb. Let me not shame them, Beck ning, beck ning, feet, small as mine, Beck ning toward the light. 21

III Internal Freedom realized through Interconnectedness; Peace through life beyond the grave. Do Not Stand at My Grave and Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there, I did not die. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints of snow. Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. I am the flowers that bloom. I am a quiet room. Of quiet birds in circling flight, I am the soft starlight of night. When you awaken in the morning s hush I am the swift uplifting rush. Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. J. Lanier Grant Us Peace (excerpt) and A Prayer for Peace Grant Us Peace Grant us peace, Your most precious gift, O Eternal Source of peace, And give us the will to proclaim its message to all the peoples of the earth. Recessional (Not One Sparrow Is Forgotten) Not one sparrow is forgotten, E en the raven God will feed; And the lily of the valley From His bounty hath its need. Stanley M. Hoffman A Prayer for Peace May the one who causes peace to rule in the heavens grant peace to all who are gathered here today, to all peoples, and to all the earth, and let us say amen. Shaker Hymn, arr. William Hawley Then shall I not trust Thee, Father, In Thy mercy have a share? And through faith and prayer, my Mother, Merit Thy protecting This work is part of Project : Encore of Schola Cantorum on Hudson. 23 IV Rebirth of Possibility New Mornings. We are never alone on the journey, for it is shared. Will There Really Be a Morning? Will there really be a Morning? Is there such a thing as Day? Could I see it from the mountains If I were as tall as they? Morning, Morning, Where does Morning lie? Has it feet like Water lilies? Has it feathers like a Bird? Is it brought from famous countries of which I have never heard? Morning, Morning, Where does Morning lie? Beautiful River Shall we gather at the river, where bright angel feet have trod, With its crystal tide forever flowing by the throne of God? Yes, we ll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river, Gather with the saints at the river, that flows by the throne of God. Craig Hella Johnson Oh some Scholar, Oh some Sailor, Oh some Wisemen from the sky, Please to tell a little Pilgrim Where the place called Morning lies? Morning, Morning, Where does Morning lie? Words and Music by Rev. Robert Lowry, arr. William Hawley On the margin of the river, washing up its silver spray, We will walk and worship all the happy golden day. Yes, we ll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river, Gather with the saints at the river, that flows by the throne of God. 23
