President: Bill Harris Editor: Rita Arendz The mandate of the Canadian Band Association (Ontario) is to support and promote the development of bands throughout the Province of Ontario by way of communication, program development, advocacy and lobbying at the provincial level. Welcome to this issue of, a periodic e-newsletter of the Canadian Band Association, Ontario Chapter. In this issue: From the President CBA Canadian Composer Award CBW11 - In Review In Our Backyard: o Brassroots of London, Ontario o Kitchener Musical Society Band National Youth Band of Canada Audition Deadline 16 November 2011 New Members The Music Corner Calendar of Events November/December 2011 e-fanfare Submission Deadline for next issue 31 December 2011 From The CBA(O) President Protecting Your Band A community band, to be successful, takes a lot of volunteer time and attention to detail. Issues that can too often be placed on the back burner are steps necessary to protect the band s assets and operations. As a community band you arrange a rehearsal location, advertise for members, collect membership dues, elect an executive, hire a conductor, purchase music and instruments and deliver concerts. Without thinking about it, we too often ignore the impact and risks that come with those operational steps. While we are lucky that Canadians are not as litigious as Americans, we must be aware of what steps we need to consider as we operate our bands. These are some areas to consider and potential actions to take: Financial concerns: Ensure that the role of Treasurer is visible and operating either as a separate position or as a joint secretary/treasurer position. The President or Conductor should not cover this task; When an asset is purchased, music, instruments or other, make sure that it is identified as the band s property with a stamp, engrave or label. Record serial numbers and take digital photos of physical assets for documentation purposes (in fact some bands have offered digital photos of members instruments for their personal records); If your band is registered as a charity with the Canadian Revenue Agency, make sure that the annual filing takes place within 6 months of your fiscal year end and ensure that the appropriate CRA paperwork and identification documents are used; 1/10

Have your financial records audited by a professional; Consider Liability Insurance to protect the band. More and more concert venues require that the band provide proof of Liability Insurance before renting space for a concert. CBA(Ontario) has worked with a major insurance broker to provide BandSure, a comprehensive Property, Liability and DaO insurance program designed with community bands in mind. Check out for additional BandSure information; Bands, over time, acquire large and expensive music libraries. It is important to not only protect the investment in the music but we must consider the legal implications of photocopying and duplication. If you have a piece in your library that is photocopied, consider purchasing the actual chart and retiring the copies. Investigate online libraries that provide access to copyright expire music for free use, consult the CBA(O) Resources webpage for pointers In future issues we will examine other areas that we must be aware of in order to protect our groups. Submitted by Bill Harris, President, CBA(O) CBA Canadian Composer Award 2011 Donald Coakley Donald Coakley (left) and Bill Harris, President CBA(O) after the presentation of the CBA Canadian Composer Award A native of Preston (near Cambridge), Ontario, Donald Coakley was for twenty years the Assistant Co-ordinator of Music responsible for the administration of instrumental music for the Scarborough Board of Education. His musical education took place in the United States holding degrees of Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the Crane School of Music at the State University of New York, in Potsdam, New York; Master of Music Education from the Esther Boyer College of Music at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Master of Music in Composition and Performance from the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music studying under American composer Vincent Persichetti. Coakley s works include those for band, full orchestra, string orchestra, chamber ensembles, and choir. Many of his compositions reflect his commitment to music education and are directed toward the capabilities of student ensembles on the elementary, secondary, and university levels. Mr. Coakley has received numerous commissions from performing organizations in both Canada and the United States. The CBA Canadian Composer Award is presented to a Canadian Composer who has made a significant contribution to band repertoire. Nominations are presented at the CBA National Board meeting and voted on by the representatives of the ten Provincial Chapters. At the fall 2010 National Board Meeting held in Halifax, the Nova Scotia Board Association nominated Mr. Coakley and the nominations was accepted unanimously by all chapters. The CBA Canadian Composers Award has only been awarded three times since its inception: 2/10

Brian Appleby from Alberta in 1991, Eddie Graf from Ontario in 2003, and for 2011, Donald Coakley from Ontario. Submitted by Bill Harris, President, CBA(O) Community Band Weekend 2011 In Review Our 10 th annual Community Band Weekend, held October 14-16, 2011, hosted by the Orillia Wind Ensemble, was a great success! Music for a Fall Afternoon actually started last winter with the first visible signs in spring when CBA(O) was presented a cheque from the City of Orillia to help off-set the costs of the performance venue, the beautiful and historic Orillia Opera House. The summer was sleeping on the surface but very busy as the music was being selected, invitations sent to Donald Coakley to be Guest Conductor, and to John Palmer. By September the OWE team had hammered out the details of a wonderful weekend as this was to be one of music-making and friend-making! Brewery Bay was the location of the Friday night Meet & Greet some were returning faces from past years and some were new (published in Orillia Packet & Times Friday May 13, 2011 photo credit faces out for an experience. Saturday was Nathan Taylor) time to get to business as eighty musicians from thirty community bands rehearsaled both in the morning and in the afternoon. The windows of the rehearsal area overlooked Lake Couchiching the warm commariedie and fun in learning the music far out did the weather that was visible by the conductors looking past the back of the band. Morning Rehearsal started at 9am - finished at 12 noon! Afternoon Rehearsal started at 1pm - finished at 4:30pm! 3/10

As can be imagined, there had to be a post-rehearsal event which included dinner and lots of talking, laughing, commiserating (over some of those wrong notes earlier in the day) which was thoroughly enjoyed at Sixteen Front. Sunday was performance time, but not without a dress-rehearsal actually more of how do we fit on the stage rehearsal. We didn t! Staging had to be erected in front for three more rows to accommodate everyone! But not to worry the wonderful team at OWE had that all organized especially in light of how to get everything brought in with the use of a boom-hoist! Once everyone figured out how to get to their seats and back without knocking over a music stand everything was Good-To-Go! Now that we have found our seats its dress rehearsal! The repertoire this year had a very definite tilt to all things Canadian, both old and new. Of the thirteen works performed, eight were by Canadian Composers, with Donald Coakley and Louie Calleja conducting their own works, and John Palmer listening to his. The program was challenging, yet approachable and the first half included such works as Howard Cable s arrangement of O Canada and Snake Fence Country, Donald Coakley s A Distant Voice and Donkey Riding, Louie Calleja s Scherzo, rounded out by Frescobaldi s Toccata and Frank Erickson s Air for Band. After a much needed intermission, more Canadian repertoire was performed with Robert Buckley s Cathedral Grove (from Cascadia Suite) and Procession of the Sorcerers, and John Palmer s Canadian Folk Song 4/10

Fantasy. Other works in the second half included Jacob de Haan s La Storia, and Peter Graham s Drums of Thunder (complete with jungle sound effects) and Earth Walk, both from his work titled Windows of the World. What concert would be complete without an encore! Also sprach Zarathustra! (better known as the theme from Space Odyssey 2001! just ten years later!) The audience was ecstatic, the musicians very tired but beaming! Thank you to all who helped put this great weekend together and we look forward to next year s in Richmond Hill, Oct 13-14, 2012 hosted by the Silverthorne Symphonic Winds! And for those who like to plan even further in advance May 25-26, 2013 will see the inaugural CBW-East hosted by the Seaway Winds Concert Band in Cornwall! What an exciting weekend! I have to admit I was mentally tired by 4 o clock on Sunday, but it was worth it! Mary Gerard, French Horn, Orillia Wind Ensemble The weekend was fabulous! Janet Barnard, Baritone, Etobicoke Community Concert Band In Our Backyard Brassroots of London, Ontario Celebrates its 25 th Anniversary Brassroots first concert of its season will be a celebration of 25years of concerts in London Ontario. The ensemble was founded in 1986 by Professor James White and a few of his students and quickly established a valued presence in the cultural life of the city. Since those early days the ensemble has grown from strength to strength and now enjoys an enviable reputation as one of Canada s finest brass ensembles. When the famed British Philip Jones Brass Ensemble disbanded in the same year as Brassroots was formed, they were most generous in donating some of their arrangements to Brassroots. Thus charts were available for those early concerts by this unique ensemble - comprising four trumpets, one horn, one tuba and four trombones and two percussionists. In the formative years, London s own Jeff Christmas composed several charts and skillfully arranged some jazz standards. These, along with arrangements by several members of the ensemble, have enriched the library that now contains well over four hundred charts. Concerts are eclectic in nature, embracing every genre from jazz to classics. 5/10

Most of the members are music educators; several are conductors of High School Bands. Gwyn Beynon is the music director of Encore the Concert Band in London and Dave Davidson conducts the Kitchener Musical Society Band. Brassroots is about to release its sixth CD. It will contain ten of the best-loved songs such as September Song, Yesterday, When I m 64, Send in the Clowns and more. It will be a gift to those attending the Anniversary Concert on Saturday November 12 at St. James Westminster Anglican Church, London. The previous CD celebrates the music of Jeff Christmas, the central item being his Cocktail Suite, an inventive seven-movement suite depicting favorite beverages. It has received critical acclaim for the presentation and the quality of the music. All Brassroots recordings (including A Brassroots Christmas ) will soon be available on I Tunes and other download sites. While employment demands make it difficult for Brassroots to visit other towns, the ensemble has performed in over thirty communities and has represented Canada at the Great American Brass Festival in Kentucky. It has performed twice at the Ontario Music Educators conference and twice, it has been awarded best classical ensemble in London! A relatively stable membership is a key to Brassroots success. Julia Vaughan is a founding member and Rob Inch, Paul Stevenson and Susan Follows all joined the ensemble in those formative years. We know of no other ten- piece brass ensemble in Canada that has presented concert series in its community for 25 years. We would love to hear from other similar brass ensembles; share ideas and chat about music available for our type of ensemble. Visit for more details about the ensemble s mission statement, history, personnel and contact information. Submitted by Bramwell Gregson, Music Director, Brassroots Kitchener Musical Society Band The 60-member Kitchener Musical Society Band (founded in 1876) is in the midst of a busy 2011 schedule that by Christmas will have covered some two-dozen events. Many of them are outdoor summer park programs in local and regional venues, as well as performances for retirement communities, participation in civic events like the K-W Multicultural Festival, and continuing a new tradition of joint concerts with other area bands; this past June we shared an excellent Folk and Fantasy program with the Cambridge Concert Band. Most recently, we moved a regular Monday night rehearsal to Stewart Avenue School in Cambridge and were joined by Grade 7 and 8 instrumental music students of teacher Josh Crouch, who 6/10

plays baritone sax in the KMSB. During the remainder of the fall season, we will take some new and favorite Christmas selections to local retirement homes, as well as braving the uncertainties of outdoor weather for the famed Christkindl Market and putting on a more formal seasonal program in the lofty acoustics of the Kitchener city hall Rotunda. Earlier this year, several months of intense preparation for 2011 spring music festivals paid off handsomely with high 2 nd -place marks at Stratford and a gold award in Kitchener (where marks are not assigned). The KMSB was then recommended to compete in the Ontario Music Festival Association provincial finals through a recorded submission and earned 1 st -place honors (in 2010 we were 2 nd ). The KMSB has received good news this season in a long-standing quest to upgrade some of our aging equipment, especially percussion instruments. Although the City of Kitchener continues to generously support our regular ongoing expenses, additional funds are required for special projects. Our first-ever application to the Ontario Trillium Foundation resulted in a grant that will allow some of our most urgent equipment needs to be met. Additionally, we have just been accepted to proceed with a Waterloo Region Arts Fund grant application to cover a music commissioning project in honor of Kitchener s Cityhood Centennial in In November a wind trio of KMSB members will take the band s name to the Love of Music Marathon, a popular annual fundraiser for the K-W Symphony in which local amateur musicians collect sponsors for dozens of performances in a day of free live music that draws hundreds of listeners. Among the KMSB s ongoing projects is the transcription of several hundred cassette tapes of past performances recorded by late John C. Smith, a long-time band trombonist ( ) who passed away in November 2010 at age 95. The massive task, undertaken earlier this year by a non-playing KMSB volunteer, is nearing completion with more than 80% of the recordings now restored and preserved for posterity. Similar preservation work has also been done for band photo and media archives. A planned near-future project will be an exhaustive reorganization and culling of our large collection of scores to ease the burden on our hardworking volunteer librarians. A highlight of the KMSB s end-of season events is our annual Volunteer Appreciation dinner in December, where we share good food and good company and where prizes, service pins and scholarships are awarded. Thanks to several good responses this year from local media, our band is gaining a higher profile in the Kitchener area. The accompanying photo, taken after our August 28 concert in Victoria Park, is courtesy of the local SNAP community news tabloid; we re thrilled that they came out to hear us. To find out more about the KMSB, please visit our website at where you can also hear recent MP3 recordings from our current repertoire.
