2 2 Presidents Message Well looks like we had another great winner of a concert with the HOMECOMING concert. Sam Minevich had another All Star line-up of several great young artists formerly from Regina and now studying outside the province, combined with a stellar top up of some of the very best local jazz players on the scene today. Sam s book not only was very diverse featuring great well known standards, but, some interesting popular tunes, along with definite cutting edge material that featured at various times, everyone in the band. To be sure, the place was packed, as extra tables needed to be set up and once again it was a typical HOMECOMING concert with an opportunity to see so many good friends and loyal supporters of RJS.- all at the same time and in the same location. Once again special thanks go to all those volunteers that also helped make this special HOMECOMING concert successful and possible, Mike & Pam Daly, Al Fitzpatrick, Joan Kelly, Kate Keyes, Pat Rogan, Phil Walsh, Claudette Weinbender, and Bev Wilson. Without the help of our loyal and hard working volunteers live jazz would not be possible in Regina. Now get ready for another great concert on Friday, January 23rd. Le Bistro will host the Johnny Summers Quartet. It s been a few years since trumpeter Summers played here with an All Star Edmonton Sextet, led by Don Bernier. Summers was very popular that time and his singing was really an added bonus to a very good band. Once again you can count on it being a fun night and you re guaranteed not to be disappointed with the musical talent. I ve been waiting some time to hear and see their drummer Karl Schwonik live for the first time, so this should be an interesting musical event. The entire group is highlighted elsewhere here in this our January News Letter. Then on Friday February 13th we ll have a great band for your Valentine s party entertainment. The Pile of Bones Brass Band will light up Le Bistro. So get ready for that funky horn line and shake your booty rhythm section to get your feet tappin in time to their infectious, happy, sound. Their group of 9 are gonna make you think there s a whole big band in the room celebrating Valentin s Day early. Following that get ready for the return of John Stetch for the 1st time in over 5 years. He will be doing a solo concert on the Fazioli piano at Darke Hall on Sunday, March 22nd. You ll want to catch this outstanding solo piano performance. John Stetch is another one of those great Canadian exports now living in NY. RJS will also be soon selling tickets for a vacation trip to Las Vegas to be drawn during JazzFest Regina 2015, June 17-21, Tickets will be only $10 and we hope you ll help support our fundraiser for JazzFest Regina The trip will be airfare and tax for two from Regina or Saskatoon to Las Vegas with accommodations at Caesar s Palace Hotel or similar 3 night stay based on a Wednesday departure and Saturday return. The trip will need to be booked before December 31, 2015 and hopefully we ll have them ready and on sale at our current concert this Friday, January 23rd at the Bistro. Meanwhile, we hope everyone had a relaxing and warm holiday season and are enjoying a winter that seems so far to be much less punishing than the past 2 seasons. But that simply means you ll be able to catch some great live entertainment that RJS will be offering you throughout Thanks for your continuing support as you re the reason RJS - jazzregina is able to do what it does. So stay tuned to get all the 1st. hand info here on our programming line-up in 2015 and other related info on news in the jazz community and you won t miss a beat. Please check out our new website at: Peter Champagne President RJS
