1 JACKSON COMMUNITY COLLEGE Department of Music MUS 131 Understanding Music Syllabus Spring 2013 Section: MUS Instructor: Antoinette LaCinski Location: Hillsdale Campus, Clyde LeTarte Center Room 13 Dates: May 23-August 8, 2013 Day/Time: Thursday 6:00 p.m. 9:58 p.m. Contact Information: Phone/Text: Course Description: Lecture and directed listening of the elements of music, forms of music, and an introduction to the history of music of Western Civilization. Course Objectives: At the completion of this course the student should be able to listen to music with more comprehension of musical form, style, and other basic musical concepts, in particular, the development of music in Western civilization. Required Textbook: The Enjoyment of Music Essential Listening Edition, 2nd Edition. Kristine Forney, Andrew Dell Antoinio & Joseph Machlis. Instructor Attendance Policy: Attendance at all class meetings is expected. Instructor-directed listening is an essential part of the course and cannot be done outside the class. Lecture and discussion will highlight key information that will be included in unit tests. Tests are typically open-note/book, therefore you need to be at class to take the notes and know what was addressed from the book. Your final grade for the course will be reduced 0.25 for each tardy past one tardy and 0.5 for each absence past one absence. If you leave class early it will count as one complete absence. Participation reporting by the instructor is required by JCC, which is detailed in the JCC Catalog. If you must miss class, please notify the instructor prior to the class session via , text or call. Assignments: All test and report due dates are subject to change at the instructors discretion. The syllabus calendar posted on JetNet is the most current resource regarding due dates. Makeup tests are generally not given. Late work may be considered at the discretion of the instructor with a possible reduction of points. Your name and the date must be on all assignments and tests. Please refer to the reports section for additional requirements. ** Plagiarism or cheating will not be tolerated and an immediate F will be given for the class. **. Classroom Behavior: We are members of a scholarly institution; therefore, your behavior should be reflective of the community in which we are collaborating. All members of the class must be considerate and respectful of each other. Refrain from any behavior that disrupts or impedes your classmates' learning. If you have a problem during the class, please let me know discreetly. Refrain from using profanity in your written work and in your conversations during class. The seating arrangement may be changed if necessary. If you must leave or enter the room during class, please do so discreetly Electronic Devices: Phones, laptops and tablets are allowed as SCHOLARLY tools, at the instructor s discretion. Inappropriate use of the devices during class sessions will result in a grade reduction and suspension of electronic device usage during class. Technology: JetNet is a core component of this class. Numerous tests, assignments and resources are available via JetNet, so make certain that you can access it. Important class communications are sent via MUS Spring 2013 LaCinski 1 Revised: 5/29/13
2 the JCC student accounts so please ensure that you are checking that regularly and that it is working. Claiming that you had a technology problem will only be taken into account with confirmation from the JCC Solutions Center, which you must obtain and provide to the instructor. Grading: You are expected to read the assigned chapters prior to each class, pay attention in class for the entire session, and take appropriate notes. Keep all handouts, papers and tests until the end of the semester. Bring the textbook, all handouts, and the syllabus to each class. Keep a current record of your grade. If you have questions or concerns, please let me know. DUES DATES: The JetNet syllabus within our course will have the most current list for assignment and report due dates. Possible: 100. Category Percentages: Participation 20, Tests 35, Individual Reports = = = = = = = = 0.5 Participation: Criteria for Evaluating Participation: Read the chapter material in advance and be prepared to comment on textbook chapters Complete diagnostic and listening quizzes on JetNet Complete worksheets and participate actively in any small group activities. Best effort on assignments, tests and group work is expected. Reflection papers will count toward your participation grade as assigned. Upload a document in Word or pdf format in JetNet with the current date, your name, course number/setion/date (MUS Spring 2013) and current overall grade on JetNet after taking each TEST (not quiz). Diagnostic chapter quizzes and listening activities accessed via JetNet. Diagnostic quizzes and listening activities will be varied in their weight toward your participation grade. You may use your book and/or notes for the quizzes. Tests: There is one main test for each part of the book. Part 1: Prelude 1 - chapter 11 Part 2: Prelude 2 chapter 15 Part 3: Prelude 3 chapter 21 Part 4: Prelude 4 chapter 29 Part 5: Prelude 5 chapter 40 Part 6: Prelude 6 chapter 53 Reports: Total of FIVE reports. 1. Oral Presentation of a recorded or streamed concert report of a NEW classical work or traditional classical work. 3 The concert/event(s) you watch should be a minimum of 45 minutes. Most Kennedy Center concerts are approximately one hour. Your presentation should be a minimum of 3.5 minutes in length but no longer than 5 minutes. Please include the following basic information in your report with additional elaboration: Name of the concert How you accessed the concert Title of the concert Title of the compositions and their form and style Name of the composer(s) Medium(s) Your personal impression of the music in detail Were you affected emotionally Would you suggest other to watch this concert? Why or why not? Other topics may be addressed upon discussion with the instructor Must provide a listening example of approximately seconds in length (does not count toward the length requirement) May supplement with a tool such as PowerPoint or Prezi Upload a title page in pdf or Word format to JetNet with: Course number/section/term the date of the concert the date you watched the concert how you viewed the concert (streamed, taped, audio, video, etc.) web address if applicable. 2. Jazz artist, composer or band report. This is primarily a biography. There is a suggested list of composers on JetNet. You may choose someone from the list or choose your own but provide a post to the Jazz/Blues forum with the name so we minimize duplicates. Course number/section/term (MUS Spring 2013) Minimum of two-pages typed. 12-point font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins. (Quotations do not count toward the required length.) Include a works cited. 3. Written Live Concert Report: The concert should be reflective musical concert event of one of the types of music that will be primarily studied during this course (i.e., orchestra, wind ensemble, chorale, ballet, etc.). Suggested LIVE events include: the Jackson Community Concert Band, Jackson Symphony, Jackson Chorale, etc. Submit a written report of the event including a detailed description of the musical selections including background, biographical information, instrumentation, composer, ensemble structure, time period of the pieces and any other pertinent information. Include the program and/or ticket from the event along with your report if possible. Course Name (MUS Spring 2013) Minimum of two-pages typed. 12-point font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins. (Quotations do not count toward the required length.) Include a works cited. 5. End of class reflection. Provide details on some of these points as well as any other insight you may have during the class: Do you listen differently to music now? Do you have a better understanding of music? Has your perspective on music or musicians changed? What were some of your favorite pieces to listen to? Was there a musical piece or musician/composer that stood out to you?
