3 2 There are times in one s life when the work that we do is so impactful that it remains with us for a lifetime. The year at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music was one of those years. It was a year of challenges that kept us from being stationary for even the shortest time. The year started optimistically with revenues trending ahead of the prior year and projections for a strong finish giving energy to the fall. The spring, unfortunately, did not continue these good fortunes and staff faced financial challenges that required drastic and creative measures to keep the organization moving forward. While donors came out to help us finish ahead of budget for contributed revenue, programmatic revenue dropped and demanded attention to educational programs that had been suffering. The restructuring I had begun in 2013 needed to be ramped up and intensified. New personnel were brought on to breathe life into programs and we embarked upon a 4-month strategic planning process that gave us both historical perspective and a blueprint for the future. Conservatory Connections was given a hard assessment and, with the leadership of Meaghan Heinrich, began to take shape as our leading programmatic area for The challenges were met by a determined, intelligent and selfless staff who came together in a most impressive, and often heroic, way. Letter From The President In the midst of the hard times we experienced amazing successes at every turn. A record number of people visited the McIntosh Goodrich Mansion during Doors Open Milwaukee. The second annual Festival of Trees and Music grew to 32 trees, 11 concerts and 160 students in recital. The Art Song Festival debuted with 36 singers and internationally-acclaimed judges showcasing spectacular singing. The Piano Sonata Festival expanded to include a competitive division and a master class with Cathy Kautsky from Lawrence University. Our inaugural Jazz Festival far surpassed expectation, including a concert by the legendary Phil Woods, one of the last he would ever give. The Education staff spent the summer developing an extensive curriculum for our Music Counts program using state and national standards as the basis for impactful music education. Summer camps featured bucket drumming, larger numbers of students in jazz, partnership for the arts and vocal arts, and our first Rock Star Retreat. Through it all our amazing faculty changed lives one person at a time through incisive, exceptional teaching. The hundreds of people, companies and foundations who gave their hard-earned financial support to the Conservatory made our community a better place through music. These people banked on each of the considerable successes we ve presented in this Report ensuring that the challenges were merely learning opportunities and not set-backs. My staff and I try to let each of our donors know how much they mean to us, but I know that words cannot adequately express the gratitude of children and senior citizens shown through a smile and a sparkle in their eyes. As I said at the beginning of this letter, will not be a year I soon forget. However, despite the numerous learning opportunities we faced, I am more excited and energized about the Wisconsin Conservatory than I have ever been. We do exceptional and important work and we have a community behind us who knows that, for 115 years, this institution is one of the reasons why Milwaukee is such a special place to call home. Thank you for your support. Cheers to a banner year in ! Gregory Ruffer President and CEO

Conservatory Internship Opportunities In the fiscal year, the Conservatory is excited to report that partnerships with six internship organizations were established: Independence First, Creative Employment Opportunities, Harrigan & Associates, Milwaukee Public Schools, Lead to Change, and WAICU (Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities). As a result, eight interns were brought on board, including three with special needs. Internships are open to high school and college students who are at least 18 years of age, and they can work up to 400 hours on a variety of projects and areas. Each internship is customized for each individual based on their specific wants and needs. Some of the many areas where interns have provided invaluable assistance include are databases and spreadsheets, summer camps (registration, supervision of participants), 30 Days 30 Ways Campaign, video recording, library support, and organizational efforts. One of the biggest accomplishments completed by the interns was the creation of four different mailing lists and databases for our Conservatory Connections programs, from which significant returns have already been seen. The Conservatory has received positive feedback from a number of organizations on the organizations ability to create a meaningful experience for special needs students. This year, because of the fantastic work done and the headway made, the Conservatory solidified a contract with the Rosemary Kennedy Foundation to fund additional special needs interns. The contract will go into effect in the next fiscal year and it will bring in five additional special needs interns, expanding the entire internship program to ten to fifteen individuals. Interns who have helped us throughout : Patricia Avalos, Becca Bowen, Janessa Galindo, Daniel Hansher, Will Malmquist, Lee Outlaw and Israel Perez.

5 Taking Strategic Command In May 2015 the WCM Strategic Planning Committee began working with the Helen Bader Institute for Nonprofit Management (HBI) team, consisting of Shelly Schnupp, Dan Neely and Doug Ihrke, to set the stage for planning WCM s future. The committee s focus was on the organization s financial status paired with its mission impact. Matrix Map was chosen as the tool to analyze WCM s business lines for financial status and mission impact. This tool was originally developed for nonprofits by Milwaukee-based Spectrum Nonprofit Services. Business lines included both mission focused programs and fund development activities. Strategic Planning 4 Completion of the Matrix Map required two types of information: 1) calculation of the true cost of business lines including organizational overhead, completed by staff in consultation with the HBI Team; and 2) assessing business lines for their level of mission impact. Planning Committee members identified criteria for mission impact. Based on these criteria the committee then completed a survey designed and summarized by the HBI team. Results of these two activities were used to map business lines on the matrix, illustrating each business line s profitability and mission impact. The main discovery found through analyzing the Matrix Map was that the core of WCM s business lines appear strong as most demonstrate financial profitability and strong mission impact. The WCM Planning Committee will look into these findings further to determine: 1) Do these business lines present opportunities that could be expanded? 2) Is there a market for expansion? On August 12, 2015 the Planning Committee met to discuss the Matrix Map and generated ideas for addressing the opportunities and challenges the study revealed. Business lines of either low mission impact or unprofitability were examined in-depth to determine the best ways to address the issues, and continue to be examined. Suggestions ranged from tweaking aspects of programming and fundraising activities to eliminating unprofitable programs and fundraising activities. Increased marketing, new approaches to fundraising and programming alterations were identified as possible courses of action. A number of these recommendations have been implemented since August Actions taken include termination of the Music Therapy program and re-envisioning fundraising activities. The Conservatory continues to face financial and programmatic challenges as the 2016 fiscal year unfolds. The lessons learned through the strategic planning process guide present and future decision making in order to ensure a strong financial position that supports the mission for many years to come Presidential Awards Marcus Anderson, flute student of Aaron Gardner; Louie Schurrer, guitar student of Matt Schroeder; Genevieve Jagodzinski, violin student of Julie Roubik; Christopher Carloni, bass student of John Babbitt; and Eric Chen, piano student of Michael Thiele Each received presidential scholarships based on their performances at the Honors Recital.
