3 FOREWORD These lesson plan activities were designed for parents and teachers by UH, College of Education, Department of Curriculum & Instruction, QUEST 1 students attending classes at UHSSL 2. As a tribute project to the Sugar Land and surrounding Fort Bend communities, these home grown activities combine child centered themes with local community resources. As such, being aligned to the TEKS 3 and in using educational objectives in the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains 4, these lesson plans are both functional and innovative for children and adults, alike. It is my privilege to say the lesson plans showcased here were assignments in my Second Language Acquisition class which my students modified to local community happenings. Since these lessons were designed for ESOL 5 students in content area classrooms, QUEST students gave emphasis to affect student attitude, interests and values in consideration of any learning challenges. The end result is a collection of lesson plans with humanistic themes (adapting to weather, community, cultural heritage, friendship, healthy choices, identity, pride and reaching destinations). Some of the QUEST students decided to adapt their lessons to different grade levels, creating a wider breathe to their work; while others chose to delve deeper into their lessons for a particular grade level, producing more in depth activities. All in all, these activities are fresh ideas coming from aspiring teachers who have all types of children in mind. These child centered lesson plans will be presented at the Fort Bend Community Conference, on October 23, Diane Jerome, M.Ed., Program Manager, QUEST Program (in Sugar Land), University of Houston at the UHSSL. A sincere thank you to Kathy Rose (Director of Development, UHSSL), Patricia Pollicoff (Communications Director, City of Sugar Land) and Pamela Shaw (VIPS Coordinator, Fort Bend ISD) for their partnership, without whom this community project would not have been possible. 1 Q.U.E.S.T. 4 LESSON PLAN Music Education Fourth Grade Content/Grade Theme Objective Rationale Cultural Exemplars Dialogue Questions Instructional Input Music Education 4 th Grade Cultural Heritage in Our Music Children will learn that music from around the world can be found in the Sugar Land and the Fort Bend community. Measurable objective: How do music styles from around the world affect our lives? The goal of this lesson is to have students develop an awareness of the different types of music that are influenced by the different cultures that make up the Fort Bend community. Pictures of various instruments, sheet music, concert venues and a range of people playing instruments from her homeland. To promote music appreciation, ask your child to compare and contrast different types of music, What do you hear when you listen to this music? Do you hear different kinds of instruments? Are they the same ones you typically hear when listening to your favorite music? Does the music have a unique rhythm or sound? Do you know where this type of music comes from? The teacher will have a power point presentation of different instruments and the sounds they each make, representing the different cultures around Sugar Land. Teachers play an important role in exposing their students to music from different cultures. There are four ways to accomplish this; singing, playing, listening or creating 6 (i.e., for homework: choose music that broadens the child s repertoire when listening to music in the car or at home have your child perform a song or dance; field trips: plan to see different types of musical performances in the local community, visit the musical exhibit at the Museum of Southern History, etc.) As a follow up, use the internet to locate the music s country of origin by using world music portals: English World Music Central and Spanish Músicas del Mundo 6 Adopted from the Utah State Music Core Four standards of elementary music instruction. 4

5 LESSON PLAN Music Education Fourth Grade The teacher will demonstrate how to compare and contrast aspects of music by picking three different cultures and using the Venn diagram to list instruments, musical genres, musical venues, types of rhythm and lyrics for three ethnic cultures. Independent Practice This is a two part lesson plan; the first part is an off campus activity and the second part is an in class activity. Students will (a) select one way (singing, playing, listening or creating) to explore the local culture through music (Ways to Explore Music below) and (b) compare and contrast aspects of music between three different ethnic groups. By using the Venn diagram (see Appendix, Diagram 1), students will compare and contrast instruments, genres, rhythm and lyrics across three different ethnic groups. Students may pick from these groups: White, African American, Hispanic, Asian/Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, or add a group of their own. WAYS TO EXPLORE CULTURE SINGING PLAYING LISTENING Students will perform a song for their class or celebrate the holidays through song by participating in Christmas caroling or joining a church choir. Contact the Houston Symphony for dates, times and locations of their Education & Outreach program, designed for young children. Students interact with instruments at the Instrument Petting Zoo during this free concert series. n.aspx Ask the dialogue questions after listening to music in the car. 6 LESSON PLAN Music Education Fourth Grade Listening to Christmas carols on the internet: pole.com/carols/index.htm Students attend the 4 th Annual International Festival (listed below) or a live concert of a band they might not usually listen to. CREATING Create a music scrapbook. Include tickets to musical events, pictures of instruments, favorite songs, etc. Write a song to enter in a songwriting contest: Materials Scrapbook materials, Venn diagram, instruments, copies of the music, PowerPoint and projector, and a CD player. TEKS Correlations Music, Grade 4. (2) Creative expression/performance. The student performs a varied repertoire of music. The student is expected to: (A) sing or play a classroom instrument independently or in groups; and (B) sing songs from diverse cultures and styles or play such songs on a musical instrument. (3) Creative expression/performance. The student reads and writes music notation. The student is expected to: (A) read and write music notation, using a system (letters, numbers, syllables); (5) Historical/cultural heritage. The student relates music to history, to society, and to culture. The student is expected to: (A) identify aurally presented excerpts of music representing diverse genres, styles, periods, and cultures; (C) perform music and movement from diverse cultures; (6) Response/evaluation. The student responds to and evaluates music and musical performance. The student is expected to: (A) apply basic criteria in evaluating musical performances and compositions; (C) practice concert etiquette as an actively involved listener during live performances.
