2 Latest news Associate Professor This month one of our resident piano teachers, Ozgur Mert Esen, has been awarded the title of Associate Professor. Here s what Ozgur did in order to obtain that title in his own words I have been entitled Associate Professor by Council of Higher Education (CoHE). You may think this council as the general board of all universities and academic institutions in Turkey. Associate Professor title can be given only by that council according to our higher education regulations and laws. Once we complete our doctorate course we have the legal right to request associate professor exam form the Council. Council appoints 5 jury members from the major Conservatories, Music Academies and higher music institutions in Turkey. The exam consists of two stages. First stage is based on appointed Jury's assessments of the scientific academic works of the candidate (Articles in scientific journals, thesis, presentations in international conferences, master classes, participations and operations of scientific projects etc ) 5 Jury members investigate and evaluate the quality of the academic works of the candidate during 6 months, then prepare a report based on their assessments. After the Jury s report (if it s labeled as proficient) at the second stage of the exam, the council appoints a practical exam date with the same jury members where the candidate exhibit his/her artistic works and proficiency in Performing Arts. (For a pianist, the exam is 90 minutes solo recital. Difficulty is that the program of the recital must include the most important and major works of the piano repertoire) After 90 minutes performing and 30 minutes discussions about my performing and interpretations with the Jury, I ve got 5 proficient mark from my Jury and entitled Associate Professor on 13 October

3 Latest news Newton International School visits QMA In October, 21st, 45 students from Newton International School visited Qatar Music Academy to learn about Arab music and Arab musical instruments. Youngest doublebass player in Doha! Hadi Salman is the youngest double bass player in Qatar! Hossam Haggag, QMA s resident double bass teacher, describes teaching Hadi Hadi loves to play the bass and to explore the double bass sound. He is enjoying to play pizzicato in tempo and he always keep the rhythm. 3

4 Latest news Football star joins QMA Qatari-Kuwaiti football star, Adel Lami, has joined Qatar Music Academy for nay classes. Adult Music Classes Adult jawqa, adult theory and adult takht classes started this month in the Arab Department. Professional Development Qatar Music Teachers Guild held a Professional Development day for Music Teachers at Qatar Academy Al Wakra on Thursday 23rd of October. Qatar Music Academy was represented by Rachel Seay and Anne- Marie Pigneguy. Anne-Marie presented a workshop to interested teachers on using the principles of Orff and Koda ly in the classroom. It was a wonderful opportunity to hear about the musical experiences offered to students here in Doha! 4

5 Latest news Animal Circus Concert QMA will hold a family concert inspired by the stories of Aesop. The concert is in association with the French Institute, therefore there will be two showings of the performance, one in English and one in French. They will be on Friday, the 7th of November at 3.00pm (in English) and 5.00pm (in French), in Ziriab Hall. 5

6 Arab Music Department Marasi Concert Marasi will be performing for the British Library on October 30th. The concert will be recorded and published at the new Qatar National Library portal. This portal is dedicated to Oral and Musical Cultures. Qanun Qanun: The name derives from the Arabic word whichقانون means "rule, norm, principle, law". Its traditional music is based on the maqam musical system. It is a type of large Cithare, an ancient Greek musical instrument from the Lyre or Lyra family. The Qanun: Is flat Is a trapezoid shape Has a bridge, windows and skin Has 26 triple strings Played with fingers and plectra Placed on lap or table Has metal levers ( urab) to tune 6

Students can practice their piano music while a QMA teacher is nearby to ensure they are practicing effectively. Please note: this is not an extra piano lesson.
