2 Enrolment Information for Music for All Programme All students who are currently enrolled in the Music for All Programme will need to reapply for the via this link. Applications opened on: Sunday, 27th of March Applications close on: Sunday, 17th of April at 9.00am Turkish Musician Workshops From 7th -10th of March, the Arab Music Department hosted four Turkish musicians for workshops ( Turgut Ozufler-Qanun, Ali Tüfekçi - Nay, Bekir Şahin - Ud and Alper Asutay - Kaman/Violin) from Istanbul Technical University and Traditional Music Conservatory. They conducted 4 days of intensive workshops and demonstrations of Ottoman Classical music and musical instruments. The workshop was open to all Arab Music Department students. The guests sat with AMD Ud, Nay, Qanun and Kaman students to work on specific musical practice skills, sequences, exercises and pieces from the Ottoman Classical period. The workshop was a great opportunity to give more attention to important details in group classes and help students get used to working as a group in a different setting. During the four days the guests met with all AMD teachers, Yassine Ayari, Bayan Rida, Taoufik Mirkhan and Abdulla Mhoul for curriculum development sessions and to share ideas and materials for all levels of students. 2
3 AMD Annual Student and Faculty Concert On Saturday, the 12th of March QMA held it s Annual Arab Music Dept. Student & Faculty concert in Katara s Drama Theatre. AMD s Takht and Jawqa students exceled in their performance for the student section of the programme. It was a big challenge and a wonderful experience for all to prepare the pieces with the Turkish guest muscians during that week. AMD s Faculty also contributed with the Turkish guests for the second part of the concert. They performed a range of Ottoman and Arab classical music including Muwashahat, Samai and much more. The audience enjoyed the concert. 3
4 CMU Piano Trio On March 8th QMA hosted a concert given by a piano trio from Carnegie Melon University. The members of trio are Dimitri Papadimitriou on piano, Cecilia Orazi on cello, and Alyssa Wang on violin. They performed a wonderfully varied program of works by Beethoven, Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff. QMA students also had the opportunity to ask questions following the performance. Cecilia, Dimitri, and Alyssa told students about how much they practice each day, how they work together as a group, and about their experiences when they were student musicians. It was a fantastic opportunity for QMA students to be inspired by very accomplished musicians! The Faculty and Student Concert at QNCC, Auditorium 3 QMA s Annual WMD Student and Faculty Concert will be held on Saturday, the 30th of April in Qatar National Convention Centre- Auditorium 3 at 5.00pm. 6 QMA and QPO Concert at QNCC FOR THE FIRST TIME, QATAR MUSIC ACADEMY STUDENTS PLAY SIDE BY SIDE WITH THE QATAR PHIL- HARMONIC ORCHESTRA 4.00pm-4.45pm In one of the eight concerts in the Friday, April 22nd Festival of Music in QNCC, Qatar Music Academy (QMA) soloists and youth orchestra players will share the stage with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. Three Western Music Department students--violinist Tricia Enlin Ng, French horn player David Sztankov, and pianist Sebastian Tia--will play concerto movements with the QPO, and a takht (qanun, oud, nay, percussion) of Qatar Music Academy students will also perform two Arabic pieces. The concert will be conducted by Giovanni Pasini. Tickets are QR25, but as a recipient of Qatar Music Academy s Music Box you can get up to five free tickets through the use of a promotion code--the three letters QMA without the quotation marks. The Arab Music Department is delighted to welcome their new Percussion Teacher, Hany Zein, into the QMA family. Hany was born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt. He is a Music teacher and a professional percussion player. Hany graduated from the musicology department of Cairo s Academy of Arts in He studied percussion with Professor Hishem Arabi; one of the most important riq players in the Arab world. Hany commenced his musical teaching career at the Higher Institute of Arab Music in Cairo from where he was graduated, and then moved to Bahrain to teach music which provided him with an opportunity to obtain knowledge and experience with Khaleegi rhythm and percussion. Hany has appeared as a soloist with several orchestras, including the Cairo Opera Orchestra and the Cairo Conservatoire Orchestra. 6
7 AMD Parent-Teacher Meeting On Thursday, 3rd of March Yassine met with new parents enrolling in the Arab Music department s Academic Programme. Yassine talked about the AMD music programme and explained the different level including theory and practical exams. U.S. Airforce at QMA On Saturday, March 26th, Dr. Shanti Simon and her colleagues from the US Air Force visited QMA. Dr. Simon conducted the Symphonic Winds and Youth Orchestra. Symphonic Winds students were also lucky to hear a fantastic performance by Samuel Bachelder (piano), Joe Ganzelli (drums), Jeremy Laukhuf (bass), and Matthew Heister (guitar) of some jazz pieces. Students in both ensembles enjoyed learning from Dr. Simon. She stressed the importance of listening while playing in an ensemble such as Symphonic Winds and Youth Orchestra. This is an essential skill for musicians in any ensemble! Royal Irish Academy of Music- Preparatory Exam Congratulations to the Prep 2 students for attending their first mock exam. Good luck for May 20th (prep exam will be held in Ziriab at QMA from am)! Three sessions for parents were held to help parents to have a better understanding of the theory that is required for their children. Thank you to all of the parents who attended the sessions in Arabic and in English. 7
8 Oryx FM Yassine Ayari and Abdulla Mhoul had an interview at Oryx FM, the French radio station on March 2nd talking the Arab Music department s programmes (Music for all and Academic). They also demonstrate and played pieces for the listeners. QMA Young Talent on Stage at the St. Regis The last student concert in the Steinway QMA Young Talent series is scheduled for April 23rdth at 4.30pm at the Jazz at Lincoln Centre at The St. Regis Doha Hotel. Family and friends are most welcome to attend. There is no entrance fee. Doors open at 3.45pm. ACS Workshops On March 14th and 16th students from ACS School attended workshops at QMA. Yassine Ayari, Bayan Rida, Taoufik Mirkhan and Hany Zein from the Arab Music Department demonstrated Arab Music and Musical Instruments such as Nay, Qanun, Ud and Percussion. At the end of the session, students enjoyed creating rhythms using Dom and Tak two different sounds on the tabla. Piano Master Classes Thank you to Florence and Isabelle Lafitte for the wonderful master classes that were held on Sunday March 13th. Thank you so much to the French Embassy for their support with hosting the event. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to receive feedback about their playing in time for the exams in May. 8
9 Francophonie Week Yassine Ayari, Bayan Rida and Taoufik Mirkhan took part of the Francophonie week opening ceremony with Siwar Choir and Lafitte Duo. The Lafitte duet performed songs, with the SIWAR Choir and musicians from Qatar Music Academy at Katara Opera House. Link to article in the Peninsula here. Babar the Elephant Students from ACS attended two concerts about the story of Babar the Elephant. Thank you to Rachel and Debbie for the fabulous performances. AMIS Honor Band On Thursday, 17th of March two percussion students from the Arab Music Department (Sami Bou Ghanem and Chloe Adelaja) participated in the 2016 AMIS International High School/ Honor Band and Orchestra Festival in the Fine Arts Theatre at the American School of Doha. 9
10 Important Information: Western Music Department Recitals The Instrumental Recitals will be at held at QMA on April 16th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 27th, 28th, 29th and May 6. Please see the Recital schedule on the notice board outside Room 42. Students will be required to play all of their exam pieces at the recital. ABRSM Practical Exams The Practical exams will be at held at QMA on May 5th, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th, 12thand 13th, The exams will run from 9.00am until 5.00pm. Please see the exam schedule on the notice board outside Ziriab Hall. Students will need to have rehearsed with an accompanist twice prior to the exam day. Students must have an original copy of the music with them during the practical exam. Photocopies will not be allowed. Piano students, please organise to practice on the grand piano in Ziriab Hall at least once before your schedule exam. 10
