6 AMD Instrumental Workshop The Arab Music Department held its annual instrumental workshop on February the 20th. The goal was to have all AMD teachers sit with their students and work on specific practice skills, sequences and exercises to cover problems related to finger technique, maqam and improvisation. The teachers also worked on how to tune your instrument, how to take care of it and how to clean and keep your instruments safe. The workshop was an opportunity to give more attention to important details in a group class and help students get used to working as a group. It was an exciting experience for all of the AMD. The workshop was in preparation for the Turkish Instrumentals workshop which will be held at QMA starting March 7th. Welcome to New Piano Teacher, Erh-Chia! Dr. Erh-Chia Wei has received formal music training beginning at the age of five. Since childhood, she has demonstrated her musical talent by winning virtually every local and international competition in her native country, including the Taipei International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition. In 2000, she was the third prize winner of the International Rachmaninoff Competition in Tambov, Russia. Later she moved to USA to continue her education at the Boston Conservatory and the New England Conservatory, where she received her bachelor and master degrees in piano performance. She also received her Doctoral Musical Arts degree in piano performance at the University of Washington in Seattle. During her study in USA, she was the winner of several fellowships and scholarships, including Churchill Full Scholarship at Boston Conservatory and Scholarship of Mortar Board Alumni/Tolo Foundation in Seattle. Her principal teachers include Boris Lvov, Michael Lewin, Patricia Zander, and Craig Sheppard. Before moving to Doha, she was formerly a faculty member at Ip Piano School in Boston and Seattle Piano Academy where she discovered her passion for teaching. As a collaborative musician, she was a staff accompanist at Boston Conservatory and Ballet studio in Seattle. Her performance experience appears in many prestigious halls, including Taipei National Concert Hall, Rachmaninov Hall in Tambov, Meany Hall, and Benaroya Hall in Seattle. For several years, she established a strong and reputable studio in Seattle where her former students were repetitively winners of many local piano competitions and festivals. Her teaching strength shows in cultivating good practicing habits and achieving solid foundation of technique in piano playing. 6
7 Carnegie Mellon University Piano Trio Performance-Free event! Dan Martin, Dean of the College of Fine Arts, will introduce the Carnegie Mellon University Piano Trio featuring Dimitri Papadimitriou on piano, Cecilia Orazi on cello, and Alyssa Wang on violin. The performance will be held in Ziriab Hall after the Harmony Strings rehearsal on March 8 at 6.15pm-7.00pm. Please Anne-Marie Pignéguy apigneguy@qf.org.qa to reserve a seat. Trip to Myanmar Three QMA students recently participated in the AMIS Asian Middle School Honor Band and Choir Festival. AMIS stands for Association of Music in International Schools, and it was hosted in Yangon, Myanmar (Burma). Many students from international schools auditioned, and out of hundreds of other musicians Kaela Coil, Per-Niklas Barth, Hayley Binnekamp were chosen. Of the experience, Kaela said Having the experience of being conducted by guest conductors gave me a different and new perspective on the music that I wouldn t have received from our conductors at home. Without access to the world class education that I have gained from participating at QMA, I would not have made the audition to get into AMIS. Piano Masterclasses QMA will be offering Piano master classes with the two wonderful visiting pianists from France, Florence and Isabelle Lafitte. The classes will be held on Sunday March 13th from pm. Please contact Dr. Deborah Armstrong darmstrong@qf.org.qa for more information 7
