1 The Music Box Qatar Music Academy s monthly newsletter Workshops for Schools The Arab Music Department (AMD) conducted a series of workshops for different schools in Doha. SEK, Compass and Al Bateel schools visited QMA on October 10th, 24th and 25th to attend workshops about Arab music and musical instruments. Over 100 learned about the nay, qanun, oud, kaman and percussion. It was an exciting experience to promote Arab musical heritage to future generations. Highlights of this issue... 2 Latest news Qatar National Music Competition Venue- Drama Theatre, Katara Date-October 15th -19th Congratulations to all of the QMA students who participated in the first Qatar National Music Competition. Thank you to Sonja Park and Joris Laenen from MYA for organising and running the QNMC. It was fantastic to see 700 students from around Doha performing throughout the week. 4 Latest news The Katara European Jazz Festival 2017 The Katara European Jazz Festival will be held in Katara in the Al Jazeera café courtyard from on November 8th to November 12th. Bands from Bulgaria, Romania, France, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Bulgaria, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Poland will be participating in this year s festival. Workshops for students Once again QMA students are fortunate to be able to participate in five workshops hosted by Katara and the Embassies of: Italy, Germany, France, Austria and the Netherlands The workshops are free, please bring your instrument! 5 The Music Box October 2017 Latest news QMA & ASD Concert Band QMA wind and percussion students from the Qatar Youth Orchestra and Symphonic Winds and Percussion Ensemble joined with the High School Wind Ensemble from the American School of Doha to create the largest instrumental entry in the Qatar National Music Competition! Both groups prepared their parts independently then joined together the week of the competition to put all of the music together, including one very loud rehearsal in Ziriab Hall! 6 The Music Box October 2017 Latest news What s new in the Arab Music Department ? New Arab piano classes will be offered in the Arab Music Department- Music for all programme. Students aged 15 years old and above can join the new piano class. Ms. Dalia will take on these classes and will work on specific Maqam and Modes that can be played on the piano. She will prepare students to be able to play Arab songs and music that has a Western influence such as Fairouz and much more. Jelani Bauman American Jazz trumpeter Jelani Bauman visited the Junior Symphonic Winds and Percussion Ensemble on Tuesday, October 10th. Students enjoyed listening to his performance and they asked Mr. Bauman lots of questions about how he learned to play the trumpet. It was an inspiring start to a great rehearsal! Mentoring Senior trombone student, Tianyi Xu recently mentored junior trombone student, Vito Marcacci. 6

8 Important Information: Western Music Department Piano Recital- Student of Dr. Ozgur Mert Esen Daniel Ong will be performing in Ziriab Hall on Saturday, November 4th at pm. Daniel is currently preparing for his ABRSM Diploma exam in December Please come and support Daniel, friends and family are welcome! ABRSM Exams There will be a parent information evening about the ABRSM exam on Monday, November 27th at 6.00pm in Ziriab Hall with Anne-Marie Pignéguy, Head of the Western Music Department. This information night is helpful for new parents in the Academic programme at QMA. The registration and payment for the ABRSM practical and theory exams will be from January 2nd to January 7th, January 2018 by Anne-Marie Pignéguy. Please refer to the ABRSM website for more details: qa.abrsm.org/ Instrumental Recitals Students are expected to perform non ABRSM exam related pieces at the Recital in November. Students will perform 2 contrasting pieces for the Recital. The two pieces will be selected by the instrumental teacher. Students will need to wear performing attire at the Recital.
