They played many years at the Dixieland Monterey Festival (which has now been re-named Jazz Bash By-the-Bay) and have re-invented themselves and are once again a part of the Monterey Festival. Individually the players are excellent, and together they produce a terrific sound that keeps the enjoyment level high and exciting. Members are: Don Irving leader, soprano sax and bass sax; Dick Williams coronet; Rich Owens piano; Kurt Abell banjo, guitar; Carl Reiley trombone; Bert Robinson bass; Debera McIrving drums Club Meeting FEBRUARY 15, 2015
2 2 Laissez les bons temps rouler For hundreds of years, Louisiana natives have contributed their talent and ingenuity to Louisiana's food, music, and festivals. These contributions have made a great impact on the area s uniqueness, which makes it an outstanding vacation destination. I m sure a survey would show that most of our MTJS members have visited New Orleans and experienced this first hand. Mardi Gras (French: Fat Tuesday), or Shrove Tuesday, is the last day of the period of carnival before Ash Wednesday, which marks the arrival of the fasting days of Lent. The name has come to represent the entire carnival period. Notable Mardi Gras celebrations take place in New Orleans, Rio de Janeiro, and Modesto Let us begin our Mardi Gras celebration at the Clarion on February 15 th. Wear your beads and masks, and show off your gold, green, and purple attire. Guest Band Thanks for coming out to see Toot Sweet Jazz Band at our January meeting at the Clarion. It was a new band and a new year. The music was high-energy and several band members joined in some outstanding jam sets with our local jammers. The musicians had a great time and it was definitely a treat for the dancers and listeners too! February brings another new band to our club, the Bye Bye Blues Band. They are a group of seasoned veterans of jazz and swing, who bring a fresh and exhilarating approach to traditional jazz tunes. They played many years at the Dixieland Monterey Festival. Individually the players are excellent, and together they produce a terrific sound that keeps the enjoyment level high and exciting. Mardi Gras Raffle Musically Speaking President s Message Our Raffle this month we will focus on the Mardi Gras theme. This is our only club fundraiser. There were fewer prize donations in January, but the contributions were exciting, so thank you, thank you, thank you to all that have been bringing prizes. Thanks again to Olga and Becky for all the help setting up the raffle and selling tickets. Get a free raffle ticket for each donatio. As always, tickets for (Musically Speaking Continued on page 3) MISSION STATEMENT The purpose of the MODESTO TRADITIONAL JAZZ SOCIETY To preserve & promote our unique American National music treasure for future generations, To give jazz musicians opportunities to share their talent with appreciative audiences, To encourage youth to learn & to continue the original American art form of playing jazz. We welcomed Boren Sak in November, Laurie Sandhold in December, and John Schmit in January to the Jazz Society. Thank you in advance for signing in at the front table so we don t miss anyone. This is where you can visit with Norma and others. I like to hang out there for a few minutes every month to catch up on all the latest news. Norma might be looking for someone to help with the duties up front, so if you are interested, please let her know. Food and Drink: I say this every month, but it is so important. Please remember that the Clarion has been furnishing us this wonderful meeting place for over three years, at no charge. The only way we are able to repay this favor is by ordering from the Hotel Food Service. They bring someone in every meeting to serve us. Please order food and drink to let them know we appreciate their hospitality. Next Club Meeting: Our next Club Meeting will be Sunday, February 15 th and with doors opening at 12:30 PM. Put on you dancin shoes, bring a friend, and come on down to the Clarion dressed to celebrate Mardi Gras. 4 4 9 Sue s Tidbits Okay I know I was watching more football than listening to music last month. But now that the Seahawks lost the SuperBowl I can start listening again..at least til Giants baseball starts. Toot Sweet Jazz Band pleased our dancers. Every time I came in to check on things the dance floor was full. And the jam bands were good too. Thanks to all the musicians who entertained the audience. The guest band for March is the Bye Bye Blues Band. I knew them as the Bye Bye Blues Boys, when my late husband, Chuck Eastman, use to play banjo with them. The band back then was made up of Don Pellerin on clarinet, Don Irving on bass saxophone, Ken Blood and Carl Reiley on trombones, Dick Williams on trumpet, Bert Robinson on bass, Marty Bartoli and Randy Emlay on drums. Rich Owens joined the band on piano later. Don Irving is being honored as MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR at the Monterey Jazz Bash by the Sea. I m sure the new members are just as talented as the original members and I m excited to hear them. The club board has decided to run the monthly expenses to show the membership how money is spent each month.
