12 PERFORMANCES Edinburgh University Music Society Chorus The Edinburgh University Music Society Chorus is one of the largest choirs in Scotland, performing several times a year in front of large audiences. Chorus is non-auditioning, and consists of Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass sections. As with the other ensembles of EUMS, Chorus puts on a concert at the end of each semester in various venues including St. Cuthbert s Church, Greyfriars Kirk and St. Mary s Cathedral. Though the Chorus is non-auditioning, the quality of our performances is very high, and with the numbers behind us we produce a fantastic sound. Don t take our word for it, make up your own mind: here is an excerpt from a recent recording of us performing Rossini s Petite Messe Solennelle. Our Chorus performs challenging pieces of music from a wide classical repertoire, with recent works including Orff s Carmina Burana, Jenkins The Armed Man and Verdi s Messa de Requiem. Chorus also collaborates with one of our orchestras once a year to perform large choral works. Recently Bruckner s Te Deum and Walton s Coronation Te Deum were performed with some stunning solos from within Chorus, and Elgar s Dream of Gerontius in 2011 was a sell-out. 19 PERFORMANCES New Cambridge Singers was founded in 1986 by Tim Brown, Director of Music at Clare College, Cambridge. He set out to create a highly competent chamber choir, based in Cambridge but not linked to the University or its Colleges. Membership is open to all, including members of the University, by audition The choir generally gives six concerts a year, sometimes giving two performances of each programme, one in Cambridge itself and the second in a nearby town or village. Occasional forays beyond the region have taken the choir to Copenhagen and Canterbury and even Estonia. Christopher Brown, a locally-based composer, singer and conductor, was musical director of the choir from 1997 until his retirement in Under his leadership the repertoire consisted mainly of Baroque and contemporary British music, though a broad range of a cappella music was covered, and from time to time more widely known and popular works such as the Fauré Requiem, spirituals, or close harmony are performed to encourage audiences unfamiliar with the choir s core repertoire. Graham Walker a locally based cellist and conductor, took up the musical directorship of the choir in The choir has an active scheme of commissioning and premiering new works and which are funded by direct donations to the New Music fund or by buying shares in the New Cambridge Songs scheme. The choir frequently supports local or national charities and seeks opportunities to cooperate with educational and youth groups in the region. Graham Walker, the musical director of the New Cambridge Singers, as well as being acellist and conductor, was first a chorister and later a choral scholar of St John s College, Cambridge, where he read mathematics; while an undergraduate he developed his interest in conducting, directing the Gentlemen of St John s for two years and a variety of other ensembles around the University. Subsequently he took up a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, to study cello and baroque cello. As a recitalist he regularly tours the USA, where in 2008 he performed all Bach s Cello suites. Graham is a cellist of various ensembles, including Classico Latino (a piano trio performing classic Latin American music, with whom he has toured Colombia several times). Amongst his recordings, variously as a cellist, singer and conductor, is his latest disc, Classico Latino and Friends: Journey Through Latin America, which was launched in April of this year and is currently competing for the Latin Grammys. In 2011 he was awarded a plaque live on Colombian national television in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Colombian Andean music. He is choir director of St Mark s, Newnham, Musical Director of the Haslingfield Choir and Orchestra, and in 2013 accepted the musical directorship of the New Cambridge Singers. 23 PERFORMANCES City Chorus City Chorus is a friendly amateur choir that rehearses in the heart of the City of London. We perform three concerts each year in a variety of styles. The choir is directed by Paul Ayres and accompanied by Philip Shannon. Paul Ayres Paul Ayres was born in London, studied music at Oxford University, and now works freelance as a composer & arranger, choral conductor & musical director, and organist & accompanist. His compositions usually involve words - solo songs, choral pieces, music for theatre productions - and he is particularly interested in working with pre-existing music, from arrangements of folksongs, hymns, jazz standards and nursery rhymes to re-compositions of classical works, as in Purcell s Funeral Sentence, 4A Wreck and Messyah. As well as City Chorus, Paul is the regular conductor of the London College of Music Choirs and the Walbrook Singers, and the associate accompanist of Crouch End Festival Chorus. He has led many education workshops for children, played piano for improvised comedy shows and musical theatre, and has given solo organ recitals in the UK, Scandinavia, Europe, North America and Australia FROST CHORALE, UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI 23
