2 Dear Los Gatos High School Band, Orchestra and Choir Member, We share in your excitement that your trip to England is finally almost here. This tour booklet provides an outline of the highlights of your trip and a detailed itinerary with flight and hotel details for you and those at home who may want to contact you. It also includes information that will be useful while you are in England. All the information is subject to change due to any circumstances beyond our control. Name Badge Please wear this upon arrival in London so that our staff can recognize you and whenever you are participating in a tour program. Baggage Tags Be sure that each of your bags, including your check-in bag, has a completed KIconcerts baggage tag affixed. Other things to note: Airline Tickets Your airline ticket is an electronic ticket. A copy is not necessary for airport check-in as long as you have your passport and flight information. Passport Your passports will be collected in advance of the trip and held by the trip coordinators And finally, we wish you a very pleasant and memorable time. 4 PERFORMANCES June 25, 2014 Concert by Los Gatos High School Choir & Orchestra at Southwark Cathedral, London Southwark Cathedral lies on the south bank of the River Thames close to London Bridge. It is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Southwark. It has been a place of Christian worship for over 1,400 years. William Shakespeare s brother, Edmund, was buried here in The grave is unmarked, but there is a commemorative stone in the paving of the choir which was placed there at a later date. The Harvard Chapel commemorates the relationship of the Cathedral with the Harvard family after whom the university is named. DISCOVER ENGLAND - YOUR WORLD OF MUSIC 4

5 PERFORMANCES June 26, 2014 Festival Gala Concert with Los Gatos High School Choir, Orchestra and Band, London Sings! and Southwark Concert Band conducted by Frank Ticheli at Central Hall Westminster, London London Sings! is a new and innovative choir set up in 2012 under the auspices of South London Community Music. Its aims are to rehearse and perform a wide variety of music to a high standard, and to engage with the local community, both in its membership and by bringing top quality performances to the local area and beyond. We also plan to have a lot of fun doing it! The Southwark Concert Band brings you a night of big band music, covering everything from the golden era of 1940s swing right up to modern day jazz charts. Featuring some of the finest soloists south of the river, the SLSW is in great demand right across the capital, regularly performing at bandstands, community events and local festivals to packed houses. Central Hall Westminster London The Methodist Central Hall Westminster (also known as Central Hall Westminster) is a multi-purpose venue and tourist attraction in City of Westminster, London. 6 PERFORMANCES June 28, 2014 Recital by Los Gatos High School Choir at York Minster, York From the world s greatest treasures to the smallest curiosities, York Minster is one of the world s most magnificent cathedrals, with foundations rooted in the nation s earliest history. The Minster is also known as St Peter s, its full name being the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York. In the past the church sat within its own walled precinct, known as the Liberty of St Peter. The site of the magnificent medieval building has always been an important one for the city. The remains of the Basilica, the ceremonial centre of the Roman fortress, have been found beneath the Minster building. The first Christian church on the site has been dated to 627 and the first Archbishop of York was recognised by the Pope in 732. York Minster is the second largest Gothic cathedral of Northern Europe. The building we have today was begun in 1230 and took more than 200 years to complete, being finished in 1472 DISCOVER ENGLAND - YOUR WORLD OF MUSIC 6

7 PERFORMANCES June 28, 2014 Concert as part of the Harrogate International Festival with Los Gatos High School Band and Orchestra and St. John Fisher Catholic High School Concert Band in Bandstand, Valley Gardens, Harrogate The St. John Fisher Catholic High School Concert Band is the largest ensemble at St. John Fisher School and numbers some 50 members. The band is a traditional Symphonic Wind Band and prides itself on having members from Years 7-13 at the school. Some members have only been playing their instruments for a matter of months. The band has performed regularly at the National Festival of Music for Youth, and has given performances at Symphony Hall Birmingham. Valley Gardens - Harrogate Valley Gardens, Harrogate is an English Heritage Grade II Listed Garden situated in regal Low Harrogate, adjacent to a popular woodland known as The Pinewoods, and covers 17 acres. It includes beautiful historical buildings such as the Sun Pavilion and Colonnades which sit alongside a wide variety of shrub, flower and herbaceous beds. 8 PERFORMANCES June 29, 2014 Gala Concert with Los Gatos High School Choir, Orchestra and Band, The Harrogate Band and The Fisher Singers conducted by Frank Ticheli as part of the Harrogate International Festival at the Royal Hall, Harrogate The Fisher Singers began life ten years ago as a new community choir attached to St John Fisher High School in Harrogate. We are open to all keen singers and enthusiasm is the main qualification. Our youngest member is 11 and our oldest is somewhat more advanced in age. The Harrogate Band was formed in April 1970 from a nucleus of former Harrogate Granby High School Concert Band pupils who wanted to continue their playing after leaving the school. It was the first brass band in Harrogate since the original Harrogate Silver Prize Band folded in The Band s first conductor, Neil Richmond, led it to success at its first contest in November 1970 at York - the first of many contest successes over the last 30 years. The Royal Hall - Harrogate Harrogate s rise as a spa town of international repute over a 200 year period, led in 1903 to the building of the Royal Hall as a place of day and night time entertainment including grand receptions and special occasions, a role it effortlessly replicates 100 years on. Originally called the Kursaal, the Royal Hall s name was changed during World War 1 to reflect a more patriotic position. DISCOVER ENGLAND - YOUR WORLD OF MUSIC 8
