1 RIAM Teaching Network Conference 29 th & 30 th June 2015

2 Director s Welcome - Reaching Out I am delighted to welcome you to the RIAM s second Teaching Network Conference. The RIAM Teaching Network was set up in 2014 with the goal of reaching out to the many thousands of practical music teachers in Ireland, to facilitate their own professional development and also to foster a community of practice through networking events. We are delighted with the response from teachers who have joined up. One major new development is the expansion of Jennifer O Connor-Madsen s role as coordinator of the RIAM Teaching Network from next September, as part of an increasing investment in this area from the RIAM, so you can expect exciting new initiatives in the months and years ahead. This year s conference continues in this spirit of reaching out. We have put together a programme which challenges you to expand your own skill-set, and also describes settings for music performance that move beyond the concert hall or traditional lesson format. We continue to offer focused advice on repertoire and aspects of music technique, and we will introduce you to RIAM s new advanced training programmes for those teachers who wish to engage in more in depth study. I look forward to meeting you over the course of the two days. Deborah Kelleher Director, Royal Irish Academy of Music

3 Teaching Network Welcome I am delighted to welcome you to the second RIAM Teaching Network Conference. This past year has been a busy one for the RIAM Teaching Network. We are delighted with the involvement of teachers all over the country with the RIAM Teaching Network. We hope to grow it further next year. Therefore, if you have any suggestions for resources or workshops you would like to see us include, please let me know. This event would not be possible without the help of so many people in the RIAM, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them. In the Local Centre Office Theresa Doyle, Dorothy McCauley, Ruth Milligan - Moody, Claire O Callaghan and Bernadette O Sullivan; In the General Office Frances Hogan and Ellen Inwood; On reception - Bernard Fox, Darina Marks and Maurice Slater; Patrick Burke; My fellow Senior Examiners Jennifer McCay and Lorna Horan; Kevin Kelleher, Ruth Meehan and Sinéad Heyenga; In the Library Philip Shields and Laoise Doherty; and the conference speakers Kim Fallen Bailey, Eve O Kelly, Anthony Byrne, Jonathan Browner, Hilary Moss, Rebecca O Connor, Virginia Kerr, Graínne Deery and Réamonn Keary, I would also like to thank Deborah Kelleher for her constant enthusiasm and support throughout the planning for today s conference and for the RIAM Teaching Network in general.
