Emer. Greetings! From President Marilyn Bogen Greetings from hot, humid Minnesota! Temperature 95 degrees. Humidity 95%. Feels as though I never left Florida! Speaking of "hot," our Season was "sizzling!" What a great year we had, starting with our first concert, "A Magical Evening of Harp and Flute Music," and ending with our "40th Anniversary Scholarship Winners' Recital," where 34 students were awarded $22,000 in scholarships! The article below about our winners is the centerpiece of this newsletter. We were very fortunate to have had many outstanding professional musicians donate their time to participate in our musical events, beginning with two harpists and seven flutists in our "opener." Another example was our very successful "Music with the Masters" Gala Benefit, which featured ten pre-eminent master musicians from Southwest Florida. One of those performing was Maestro William Noll, who generously hosted this event in his stunning home. In March, Alden Gatt, our 2006 Turiel Award winner, presented a benefit piano recital as a "thank you" to the Naples Music Club. Alden just graduated from The Eastman School of Music with degrees in piano and

You can hear him, performing with soprano Marielle Murphy, Sunday, June 6. See the announcement below for details. This is a musical event you don't want to miss! These major events were interspersed with other musical delights such as "An American Composer Happening," featuring performances by eighteen of our fine member musicians, a successful Music a la Carte event hosted by Van and Myra Williams, three student recitals, and numerous musicales in homes featuring performances by members of the club's small performance groups. We have many to thank for our successful year. We recognize the dedicated efforts of our Board, the assistance of many volunteers, and we appreciate the significant financial help provided by our many donors. We also thank North Naples United Methodist Church, Moorings Presbyterian Church, First United Methodist Church of Naples, Golden Gate High School and Steinway Piano Gallery for opening their facilities to us for concert venues, student recitals and our all-day scholarship competition. We also highly value our collaborations with both FGCU and area high schools. Thanks to FGCU's Dr. Michael Baron and Collier County's Linda Cummings and Adam Michlin for sharing their expertise and talents with us. What will the season bring? We have some very exciting concerts and events planned. Dates and locations are being finalized. When the schedule is complete it will be listed in a future Naples Music Club newsletter and on the Concerts and Events page of our Web site, naplesmusicclub.org. Have a great summer! Naples United Church of Christ 5200 Crayton Road (corner of Seagate Drive) ALDEN GATT our 2006 Turiel award-winning pianist and MARIELLE MURPHY, soprano These very recent graduates of The Eastman School of Music invite you to join them for what they tell us will be The most FUN you'll have at a classical concert all season! Gershwin Mozart Rachmaninoff Liszt Free admission. An offering to help launch these young artists will be collected at Intermission. Musicians are invited to perform in a special two-piano recital in early November and in our Members' Recital in late January! On Sunday, November 7, our season's opener will be a Phyllis Warren Memorial Two-Piano Recital (including double duos), to be presented at 3:00 at Moorings Presbyterian Church. This tribute to long-time member and Scholarship Chairman Phyllis Warren, who passed away Cathy Frecker and Phyllis Warren playing a two-piano recital in 2008.

January 22, 2009, will include performances by many of the pianists who knew her. It is being chaired by her most recent piano partner, Cathy Frecker.

This year we will feature music from the Romantic Era, embracing the period from late Beethoven through Wagner.

Naples Music Club presents winners of its 40th Annual Scholarship Competition in a Recital and Awards Ceremony By Marilyn Stanhope Always a popular event appealing to the area's musical community, the Club's Annual Winners' Recital was held this year at the First United Methodist Church of Naples on Sunday, May 2. Following the recital in which sixteen of the winners performed, $22,000 was awarded to 34 talented area musicians ages These young musicians had competed successfully in the Club's annual competition, chaired by Jan Grundeman and Judy Halpin, held April 17. Assisting with the award presentations was the individual who won the Club's first scholarship at the age of 17 forty years ago, Anita Boqvist Smith, now actively teaching, singing and accompanying in Boca Raton. The last award made is always the most coveted. It's the Club's Turiel Award, given to a student who best meets a number of criteria, including excellence in performance. This year's winner, Daniel Rosman, an 18-year-old clarinetist and senior at Estero High School, secured his win, worth $2,000, by wowing the judges with his performance of the Allegro movement from Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A Major. Grateful for the award that will launch him on to FSU in the fall, where he will major in music education, he says, "From being the drum major of a state finalist high school marching band and a student teacher in jazz and wind ensembles, I've discovered that my passion for music is more than the music itself." To Rosman, life is also about the people one

encounters who touch your life and whose lives you influence. "It is my goal to become a music teacher so I can give back the same (or better) experiences that I have been privileged to enjoy.

He credits his clarinet teacher, Paul Votapek, principal clarinetist with the Naples Philharmonic, as being the one person who has influenced him the most. Rosman lists many years of participation, during which he was 1st chair, with the Estero High School Marching Band, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble, the Naples Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Tri-State Festival Bands, Florida All State Band, and the Lee County Honor Band. For four years, he has been the 1st place winner in the woodwind division in the Naples Music Club's Scholarship Competition, and in 2009 he was top winner of the Naples Philharmonic Concerto Competition. Playing tenor saxophone as well as clarinet, he also has the distinction of receiving his high school's Top of the Class and Student Choice awards for wind ensemble. Besides music related organizations, he belongs to the National Honor Society, Knowledge Master Open, Estero High School Academic Team, and Teen Trendsetters. Thinking ahead beyond college, Rosman would also consider a short career in the U.S. Marine or Air Force Band, where travel is a side benefit. In his immediate future, Daniel Rosman has received a full scholarship to FSU's Summer Music Camp's Honors Chamber Winds Program. Armed with his music, his credentials, his scholarship awards, and his desire to share music with others, Daniel Rosman seems more than ready to take up the challenge of fulfilling his goals. Our Links page is also a quick way to connect to area music of various kinds, including schools and performing arts halls, organizations, church and other concert series, and retail stores. "Summer Scherzos" brings members of the club's four small performance groups together The Naples Music Club has a number of small performance groups that meet in members' homes monthly. For the second year, members of these four groups have formed a fifth group, just for the four summer months. It's made up of members of all four regular groups. Call Jeannette Boucher, coordinator, , for a listing of dates and homes where these convivial musicales will be taking place. Interested in joining one of the regular groups? Volunteer musicians are sought by NCH Music has been shown to be very therapeutic to those who are in pain, anxious or fearful. Naples Healthcare Systems has developed an Arts in Healing program and is asking for those who sing or play a musical instrument in a soothing style to volunteer a few hours in the hospital.
