Alex McMurray 2:00 PM Friday October 3: Alex McMurray spent a lot of time as a teenager jamming to classic rock records on guitar. When he played in his first New Orleans bands as a college student he was known for his shredding guitar solos. He started writing songs around this time to entertain his friends over marathon games of Yahtzee. He soon developed a collection of songs with jazzy changes and an easy swing that tell stories of eccentric characters that became the basis of his group Royal Fingerbowl. Alex s has released several records of his original material containing songs that are touching and sensitive and some that are downright hilarious. He is a prolific performer. When he s not performing out of town he can be found leading his groups The Valparaiso Men s Chorus, The Tin Men or the occasional Royal Fingerbowl reunion. Alex also appears as the guitar player with many groups in New Orleans and can be found on numerous local independent recordings as a featured artist or songwriter.
Tribute to Danny Barker 8:00 PM Friday October 3: Detroit Brooks and friends pay tribute to the legendary Danny Barker. Danny Barker made major contributions to the development of jazz music in America from its beginnings until he passed away in Born and raised in New Orleans, Mr. Barker moved to New York City when he was 21 and played guitar with the top bands in the burgeoning jazz scene of Harlem. He lived in New York with his wife Blu Lu Barker and their daughter for over 30 years, playing in bands, recording, writing songs and forming new groups. In 1970 he moved back to New Orleans where he continued to record, perform, write and teach. One of his most significant contributions to American music and culture came when he formed the Fairview Baptist Church Marching Band which included members of what would become The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Leroy Jones and countless others. The Fairview band heralded the resurgence of brass band music that continues to this day. This tribute to the great Danny Barker will begin with a panel discussion led by WWNO s Fred Kasten discussing the significance of Mr. Barker s work with musicians Lucien Barbarin, Gregg Stafford, Detroit Brooks and more. The discussion will be followed by a performance with a full traditional jazz band. Mehnaz Hoosein 8:00 PM Saturday October 4: Mehnaz Hoosein is an Indian pop singer and songwriter from Mumbai, India, popularly known for her hit song Banoongi Main Miss India. She is a graduate from St. Xavier s College, Mumbai. At the age of 13, Mehnaz started her vocal training in Hindustani classical music under the tutelage of Pandit Bhavdeep Jaipurwale. She began training as a dancer with Shiamak Davar from 1998 and performed with the Shiamak Davar Institute of Performing Arts till Mehnaz achieved success with her song Miss India which won her the 1996 Channel V Music Award for Best Female Pop Vocalist.
In 1996, Mehnaz won the Screen Videocon Award for Best Pop Singer for her debut album Miss India in the Non-Film Music category. Her song Main Hoon from the album Miss India was featured on the soundtrack of Deepa Mehta s movie Fire. In 1999, Mehnaz recorded a duet called You Are The Reason with Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock of the band Air Supply for the soundtrack of Dev Benegal s award-winning film Split Wide Open. In 2007, Mehnaz travelled to the United States and collaborated with local musicians who eventually formed the core of the Seattle-based band, Manooghi Hi. The group fused Indian music with American rock. Mehnaz and Manooghi Hi vocalize in several South Asian languages including English, Urdu, Sanskrit, Hindi and Bengali. Manooghi Hi released two albums titled Hi in 2009 and Silence in Mehnaz is currently living in New Orleans. She will be performing with multiinstrumentalist Andrew McLean and other local musicians. Boswell Sisters Revue 8:00 PM Friday October 10: The Boswell Sisters were a pioneering trio of singers famous for their tight harmonies and clever arrangements of popular tunes of the 1930 s. Their memory lives on thanks to their recordings, Vet Boswell Family Collection and several vocal trios that perform and record The Boswell Sisters arrangements to this day. A special event called The Boswell Sisters- Their Music Goes Round and Round is planned at The Historic New Orleans Collection October 9, 10 and 11th to close out the exhibit on The Boswell Sisters currently on display at The NOHC located at 533 Royal St. Artists from around the world who perform Boswell Sisters arrangements or in a style inspired by them have been invited to participate. The following groups will be performing:
New Orleans own Pfister Sisters Banu Gibson from New Orleans The Boswell Project from Adelaide, Australia Company B Jazz Band, Vancouver, B.C. She, Her & I, Los Angeles O Sister from Seville, Spain Duchess from New York Yazoo Zazz from Washington D.C. The Hazelnuts from Israel This is a once in a life time moment, a first, never before event that brings artist from all over the world back to New Orleans where The Boswell Sound all began. There are more events planned celebrating The Boswell Sisters at The Historic New Orleans Collection and The Spotted Cat Music Club. Vet Boswell s Granddaughter Kyla Titus will be present at many of the events. Loyola Jazz Underground presents Leroy Jones 7:30 PM Thursday October 23: The legendary jazz trumpeter Leroy Jones is known to music lovers as the keeper of the flame for traditional New Orleans jazz and to critics as one of the top musicians ever produced by the Crescent City. Jones himself, a native of New Orleans, whose playing has been described as a blend of Louis Armstrong and bebop virtuoso Clifford Brown, has been a critical figure in the history of New Orleans music. A regular at Preservation Hall in New Orleans and a featured performer in the Harry Connick Orchestra, where his playing and singing have made him a crowd favorite, Leroy has performed on every continent and in every major U.S. city at prestigious theaters, festivals and jazz clubs like the Village Vanguard in New York City. His television appearances include The Tonight Show, Good Morning America, Late Night with David Letterman, The Today Show, Arsenio Hall, Conan O Brien and Oprah Winfrey.
Leroy will perform with a student ensemble from The Loyola College of Music. Irene Sage 8:00 PM Friday October 24: Singer Irene Sage has been composing and performing original rock music for over 20 years. Her powerful voice is gutsy and gritty and she s capable of squeezing the blues out of any song and throwing in harmonies on the fly. She has released several recordings since Irene will be celebrating the release of her latest recording at The Mint. King James and the Special Men 8:00 PM Saturday October 25: If you go to BJ s Lounge on a Monday night you ll find Jimmy Horn performing as King James fronting his group The Special Men. Jimmy s a big guy but King James is larger than life with a raw vocal style, a thick drawl and tons of attitude that takes us back to a time when guys from the 9th ward worked on the docks and everybody smoked cigarettes. The Special Men is a big band playing R&B right there in the pocket featuring some of the best players in New Orleans. Together, King James and the Special Men preserve the sound of 1940 s & 50 s R&B (known as Rock N Roll across the USA) right here in New Orleans where it was born. It sounds just like Records From The Crypt but brand new and original. They perform Monday nights at BJ S Lounge and bring their sound across the country, including a performance at Lincoln Center in The Old U.S. Mint is located at 400 Esplanade Ave. in New Orleans. For more information call or awolf@crt.la.gov. The museum is wheelchair accessible. Doors open 30 minutes prior to each show. Visit MusicAtTheMint.org to purchase tickets.
