2 Music on the Hill June 30 July 25, 2008 Ages 9 to 14 Music on the Hill (MOTH) is a four week program that balances study and performance of chamber music with supervised recreational activities and a choice of arts workshops. Music on the Hill, now in its 14th season, is held in the spacious addition of the First Church in Belmont, Unitarian Universalist Church. The space, which features beautiful, sunlit classrooms and a spectacular cathedral ceiling, is truly a wonderful place to make music. Also, First Church is conveniently located across the street from the Belmont commuter rail and has a #74/75 MBTA bus stop nearby. MOTH serves the needs of young musicians who live in Eastern Massachusetts. The staff includes teachers well known for their experience and success with young people at this formative and decisive stage of musical development. Participants will come away with a heightened musical awareness on many levels, new friendships, and an enthusiastic interest in seeking out and participating in future chamber music ensembles. Our program is designed for intermediate to advanced instrumentalists who are eager to have fun making music with others. MOTH seeks motivated young people ready to respond to a variety of influences. Our program encourages harmony between the artistic disciplines and shared experience and achievement among musicians. Tuition Application fee: $30 (There is no fee for students who have already paid their annual registration fee.) MOTH student tuition: $2,200 Private lessons (optional): $228 (This covers four 45-minute lessons for instrument or composition.) CIT student tuition: $825 Financial Aid deadline is April 11, At MOTH Each Student Plays and performs in two chamber ensembles. Has the opportunity to perform in weekly solo recitals. Performs in the MOTH orchestra. Expands musical horizons through choices in electives such as music theory and history, jazz improvisation, and viola for violinists. Has access to private lessons in their instrument or composition taught by excellent faculty. Chooses a daily visual arts/theatre workshop or a supervised recreational activity. 2 Music on the Hill

3 CIT (Counselor in Training) Program Ages 15 to 18 Students will be chosen by audition and recommendation. Ensemble coaching and opportunities to perform with MOTH faculty and students in recitals are available. CIT students will help faculty and staff in rehearsals and other activities during the day. Enrollment is limited to a maximum of 8 students. Financial Aid Financial aid is available for this program. Those interested in applying must submit a financial aid application within two weeks of acceptance into the program. Please contact the administrative offices for an application. No financial aid applications will be accepted after April 11. Financial aid recipients must confirm acceptance of aid by May 5. 4 General Information A $30 application fee is required of all students who are not currently enrolled at Powers Music School. Tuition is $2200. Private lessons in a particular instrument or composition are available for an additional fee of $228. In order to provide the optimal experience for all participants, auditions are required. Acceptance into the MOTH program is by rolling admission. Typically students will be notified of acceptance within two weeks of their audition. To reserve your place in the program, a $500 non-refundable deposit is required within two weeks of notification of acceptance. The deposit is not required for financial aid applicants during that time. Tuition balance is due in full for all applicants by May 16 unless a payment plan has been arranged for financial aid recipients. Credit card (Mastercard, Visa) payments are accepted as well as checks. All fees and tuition for this program are non-refundable. MUSIC ELECTIVES and WORKSHOPS* Art Art classes at MOTH offer students an opportunity to work in a variety of media including drawing (pencil and charcoal), painting (watercolor and acrylic), mixed media collage, plaster, papier mâché, paper marbling, and chinese silk painting. Different classes are offered each year. Jazz Improvisation Improvisation is great fun and a wonderful way of using one s musicality. Participants in jazz improvisation will enjoy learning and exploring improvisational techniques and will find what makes improvisation so exciting to musicians and listeners alike. This class is open to instrumentalists with or without background in improvisation. Music History and Theory This class provides students a broad overview of music from the 17th century to the contemporary music of today. Students will enjoy listening to recordings in class and have an opportunity to discuss aspects of pieces they are learning and performing. Reading materials will be available for those interested. Students will work on basic musicianship training, and part of their daily practice will include sight reading and rhythms, along with written assignments. This class may be divided into different levels based on ability. Organized Recreational Activities MOTH students will have the opportunity to participate in indoor and outdoor games and activities, such as soccer, volleyball, softball and chess. 4 Music on the Hill

5 Theatre Drama class gives the MOTH student an opportunity to act and learn acting skills. Repertoire may include scenes from Shakespeare, complete short plays of contemporary authors, and a variety of improvisational skits. Students perform for students and parents at the end of the session. Viola for Violinists Are you a violinist interested in learning how to play viola? This class allows violin students to learn the fundamentals of playing the viola including alto clef reading and techniques associated with the viola. This class is limited in size and violas will be provided. *All electives and workshops are subject to change based on minimums and enrollment numbers. Enrollment is based on a first come, first served policy. I am glad to be able to use what I have learned each school year to play chamber music in a fun setting and at a higher level each summer. MOTH provided a stellar opportunity for Jay to stretch into more demanding music and ensemble playing in an extremely supportive environment. Within each ensemble the kids were at equivalent levels of mastery, which was very effective at eliminating competition that could intimidate a young player. The skill-level of the campers was spectacular this provided some great inspiration to our camper. The faculty members were also highly competent music educators and musicians themselves which greatly enhanced their credibility with the kids. Steven Rauch, father of Jay Rauch, firstyear MOTH musician I feel that the program was definitely eye opening, cooperative, and challenging in nature with so many musically talented students. Karl also gets exposed to top-notch professionals, their playing and their tips. MOTH is a way to have fun socially with kids with similar interests.
