Nimrod s Message Editor: Cat News Vice President s Message Things have been kind of slow for the Kitty Guess what, it s Autumn and the countryside is full of color. The temperatures have gone from 90 s to low 50 s Community. I m really basically an inside cat but almost overnight. I can t decide whether to wear a jacket occasionally I get to go out on supervised outings. or just in shirtsleeves. I do have an Ace in the Hole That means I can go out on the Deck as long as I however. I regularly check my outdoor weather station don t go off the Deck. Due to the fact that I for the current conditions outside my house. My station is occasionally violate that proviso, I often find myself a Acu-Rite which gives me outdoor Temp, humidity, grounded for several days or weeks. At the very wind speed, barometric pressures, least, if I continually whine to go out, I will have to rainfall, as well as a little forecast take a time out. Well, as kitties have relatively window (based on falling or raising short memory about these events, I rely on John barometric pressure. It calculates breaking down and reinstating my trustworthy cat Heat index, due point and wind-chill. status. With all that, I can even check the extremes of high s and low s for all the above. There is even an alarm to go off if any of the values goes above or below levels that the user sets. Maybe that s too much but I get a certain security knowing what the outside conditions are and decreases the occasion of I should have warn a coat or Why is my umbrella at home. It s October, time for squash to be harvested (including All this talk about Fall, John calls it Autumn, I am pumpkins) and enjoyed as the season is upon us. Butt.. Everywhere you go its pumpkin this and pumpkin that! I very much looking forward to getting out and was reading the Traer Joe s flyer the other day and they chasing blowing leaves across the yard and have gone PUMPKIN CRAZY! They are advertising: attacking bugs that have slowed down due to the Pumpkin Ginger mini ice cream cones, Pumpkin rolls cold temperatures. Well, I am going back to reading with Pumpkin Spice Icing, Pumpkin Cheesecake, Pumpkin wafer cookies, Pumpkin pancake mix, Gluten about the two new Snow Leopards that were just Free Pumpkin Bread, Pumpkin Spice Coffee, Pumpkin born at the Syracuse Zoo. I guess I will have to just Butter, Organic canned Pumpkin, and of course keep whining and talk John into arranging a play Pumpkin Spiced Pumpkin Seeds. Ok, not so odd But date with the baby Leopards. Oh, and by the way, I Pumpkin Ale, Pumpkin Coffee, Chocolate Mousse Pumpkins (Chocolate Pumpkins???) and PUMPKIN don t have to decide if I am taking my coat when I DOG TREATS? go out! On another topic, have you notice that everywhere you turn you keep hearing about alternate TV access. That s everything from Movies to News to special subjects (Ted Talks etc.) and even TV viewing from different countries. Remember when TV was three network channels, broadcast ending at midnight with a patriotic short followed by an Indian head resolution screen. When the TV was turned off, the picture would collapse to a bright dot in the middle which would gradually fade to black. Ah, those were the days; now its broadcast digital TV, Satellite TV, and Internet Streaming Video. I guess we will just have to do some presentations on Rosamond Gifford Zoo Snow Leopards these subjects at our meetings to address some of this stuff. More is not always better and less isn t necessarily the Good old Days. 3

Block calls on your phones and other options By Bart Koslow, Whether cell phone or landline phone, we all receive many nuisance calls daily. It is a simple matter to block unwanted calls on most phones once you know how. Let s begin with your home landline phone. I receive numerous junk calls every day. I use a Panasonic smart home phone system. Like most smart home phones, it permits you to enter your phonebook. You can also set the number of rings before the answering machine kicks in. The LCD on my phone will show me the name of anyone calling who is in my phonebook. Conversely, any name not in my phonebook will also show. The first time I receive a nuisance call I ignore it. My phone will record the name and number of all calls made and keep this information until I erase it. How do I block an unwanted number? I have choices. My Panasonic will block up to 250 phone numbers. In my case, I use Spectrum (Time Warner) for my landline. You may go to the Spectrum website and block selected calls. You may also check the box that tells Spectrum to use Nomorobo.com. Nomorobo is a large database of nuisance calls. You will hear one ring, and the call will be blocked. For those of you who use other phone providers, you still may use Nomorobo provided the provider has a Simultaneous Ring feature that will ring your phone and Nomorobo at the same time. Furthermore, you may request Nomorobo to add phone numbers to its database by going to its website. Your provider, like mine, may also have a way to block calls on its website. What about my cell phone? It is even easier to block unwanted calls. If you have an Android phone, just go to Recent Calls, select the phone number and then Details. Under Details you will see a choice to block the call. Depending on the Android version finding the Recent Calls Details varies. What about you iphone? Basically, it works the same way if you have IOS 7 or later. Open the phone app. Select the Recents tab at the bottom. Click the I symbol next to the unwanted number, scroll down and tap Block this Caller. Confirm your decision. Microsoft cell phones work in a similar manner. Tap the phone app on the start screen, swipe to history, tap and hold the caller you want to block, and tap block number. I also have one other option using my Panasonic phone system. You may link two cell phones to the Panasonic phone system. When linked via Bluetooth, the main Panasonic phone unit will show a lighted LED, one for each linked cell phone. When a cell phone call comes in, it will ring on your Panasonic landline system as well as your cell phone. Likewise, you may use the Panasonic system to call out on either of your cell phones. When you finally drop your landline system, the Panasonic Phone system, in my case with five phones around the house, will be a godsend. With unlimited cell phone service becoming extremely cheap, this is an option. Now you can answer or call over your cell phone network from any phone in the house. Even more, the Panasonic system has much better sound. Hopefully, when you have activated some of the above features, you will have some peace and quiet. Or, just go back to the Good old days!

Add Bookmarks to Your Word Documents By Nancy DeMarte, If you have composed a multi-page Word document, especially if it has a table of contents, you can make it easy to go to specific locations within the document by adding bookmarks. A bookmark is used to jump to a place in a document. It is a cousin to a hyperlink, which is most often used to go to a specific place on the Internet. Let s say you have written a tutorial that has a Table of Contents. By adding a bookmark to each section in the tutorial, the reader can go to any section by clicking its title in the Table of Contents. Anything in a document can be bookmarked: text, a picture, or section, for example. Here are steps for creating a bookmark for section 4 of the tutorial below: TABLE OF CONTENTS This tutorial includes a few methods for backing up your PC files: 1. Backing up to a flash drive (page 2-3) 2. Backing up to a CD or DVD (page 4-8) 3. Backing up using Windows 7 Backup and Restore (page 9-10) 4. Backing up using Windows 10 File History (page 11) 5. Creating a System Image & System Repair Disk (page 12) 6. Backing up to OneDrive (page 13) 1. Go to and select the title of the chapter where it is located in the document. 4. Backing up using Windows 10 File History 2. On the Insert tab in the Links group, click Bookmark. 3. Under Bookmark name, type a word or short phrase and click Add. (Bookmark names must begin with a letter and must not contain any spaces. They can also include numbers or underscores, as shown.) 4. Test your bookmark by typing Ctrl+G to open the Go To tab in the Find and Replace tool. In this example, we only have one bookmark (File_History). If you have created several bookmarks, choose the one you want. Then click Go To. You will immediately jump to the title of that section. How to add hyperlinks to get to your bookmarks, rather than use the Find and Replace tool. Below are the steps you will need to create hyperlinks to the bookmarks in your document. 1. Right click the word or image you want to become the link and then left click Link 2. In the Link to box, click Place in this Document (left pane) 3. In the list, select the bookmark you want to link to, and click OK. Now you can use the keyboard combination, Ctrl+click, with each hyperlink to go directly to its bookmark in the document. 7

Yes! I am a bit old school! By Joe Isaac, Tech Talk, My daughter wanted to delete some old programs and get them off her computer, but she couldn t remember how. As is typical of my family members, if they can t remember how something is done, it becomes my job to solve the problem. Could it be because I taught Windows at CKCS for about 21 years? Windows 10 is a great program, but the techies changed many things when they wrote the new program and then again, they do the regular updates. I knew how to solve her problem easily before Windows 10 you just go to the Control Panel. But that is something I hadn t seen for a while. I figured a way to get to it using RUN and the old DOS commands but thought there must be a better simpler way. Well, there is. All you need to do is type CONTROL PANEL in the search bar on the desktop, or ask Cortana to do that for you, and bingo, there is the old control panel, including PROGRAMS AND FEATURES. Another member called and asked where to go to delete his old printer that had died, and they took to the recycle center. Going to the control panel there it is, under DEVICES AND PRINTERS. Just delete the old printer and select another as the default printer. Online Music Radio Stations By Len Nasman, If you have a computer connected to the Internet there are thousands of radio stations to choose from. Here are some examples. Classical Music Stations classical/ The scroll down list will change from time to time. Observe the Genres note for each listing. Just click on the play button to start the music. Once he music is playing, the play button becomes a pause button. You can keep the music playing while you open other program windows. National Public Radio NPR I suspect in Windows 10 there is a way to find those projects, but they created categories under settings, which I never liked as well as the small icons in Control Panel. A tip. If you need to modify something on your computer, just ask Cortana for help. She manages the search bar on the desktop. She s very talented and generally will take you right where you need to be!

Once you have opened the NPR web site, scroll down to see a long list of local NPR stations. Observe that there is a menu bar that provides selections in different Genres. Click on the tool on the right side of the list to open the web page for that station. Use VLC Media Player The free VLC Media Player program can also be used to listen to radio stations around the world. This opens a long list of radio stations around the world. You are on your own to experiment to see if you can find something interesting. After you open a radio broadcast, you can minimize VLC and keep it running in the background while doing other things on your computer. Life without the Internet By Dan Douglas Have you wondered what life would be like without the Internet at our fingertips anymore? Having experienced this very situation recently, due to an extensive outage at our office complex, I can tell you it would take some adjustment. If you ever watch shows like The Walking Dead, then you get an idea of what a disconnected society would be like, but hopefully minus the zombies! Now, I will be the first to admit that I may be out of the ordinary with my dependency upon the Internet, due to the main nature of my business; repairing and upgrading computers. But I would bet that most of my time on the Internet is like yours; surfing the web, communicating with friends and family via Skype etc., doing , streaming movies and performing financial transactions. I do the extra tasks of downloading programs/updates, performing product activations, locating drivers and Windows fixes more than the normal person, along with the research required to solve various error messages and program version incompatibilities. So, when my Internet is unavailable, I m really limited in the functions that can be performed. Let s look at those functions that we take for granted while using the Internet and what alternatives we have: Surfing the web this is the main information source for most people today, I would guess. So back to TV, radio, the library and reading daily newspapers. The previous generation of Wikipedia Encyclopedia Britannica is back! I can get my first and worst job back - selling them door to door. 9

Remember the Microsoft ( Encarta?) annual encyclopedia on CDs? Communicating Cell phones will get really streamlined without all the Internet and related display functions and just back to basic phone call capabilities. Autumn is upon us Enjoy it while we can! back to the delay of mailing and receiving letters. Typewriters and carbon paper will come back from the dead to provide the capabilities of writing legibly and multiple copies (that is what CC means after all carbon copy for additional parties). Actually, I can still use the PC and a printer for the main reason PCs were first justified in businesses word processing. Streaming movies check your local theatre for playing times you can no longer watch your show on demand. Or you can use that DVD/ Blu-ray player for more than streaming back to discs. Maybe I can restart the movie rental business that I was in back in 1979! Financial transactions remember standing in long lines at the bank? Having to access your money only at the branch where your account is based? How about ticker tape machines for those who are addicted to following the stock market? Well my Internet is back now, so back to work I must go.
