3 In 1970, Sharp started to build up expertise in LCD research and development. There is a proverb that perfectly expresses how products come to have worldwide recognition as first-class or a masterpiece: Rome wasn t built in a day. Since releasing the world s first* 1 pocket-size electronic calculator with LCD 35 years ago, Sharp has successively introduced a variety of products that incorporate LCD, such as electronic organizers, word processors, and notebook computers. Earlier, Sharp was the first manufacturer* 1 to produce a television in Japan. With the advent of LCD, technicians dreamed of the day of incorporating TV and LCD. As successive generations of technicians come and go, technology is passed along, and the spirit of making the impossible possible continues to thrive. With the technology developed by each generation, Sharp has built up a wide array of LCD expertise. In 2007, Sharp revealed the world s largest* 1 prototype LCD TV, which measures 108 inches. 4 The test of time has given birth world-class leading-edge LCD technology. Research and Development for New Frontiers in LCD Integrating Technologies to Improve LCD Performance The first LCD TV was sold in the 1980s and measured 3 inches, with manufacturers later competing to gradually increase the screen size to 4 inches and 5.5 inches. Amid this competition, engineers at Sharp succeeded in making a ground-breaking historical change by increasing the size of the LCD monitor to as large as 14 inches in a single step. This innovative technological breakthrough received worldwide acclaim for overturning commonly held assumptions about LCD. The moment of that breakthrough was the first proof that LCD would begin to replace cathode-ray tube monitors. With the start of production at the Kameyama Plant in 2004, LCD TVs now surpass CRT TVs in specifications such as screen size and picture quality. The release in 2007 of the world s largest* 1 prototype LCD TV, which measures 108 inches, proved that Sharp s LCD technology is the most advanced in the world. The 108-inch LCD TV was a milestone among the many achievements during the more than 30 years of Sharp s experience in LCD technology. * 1 Based on publicly available information as of July 2008 When LCD TVs were first released, they experienced several problems such as response time and viewing angle. As a solution, Sharp developed the Advanced Super View (ASV) LCD and greatly succeeded in overcoming these difficulties in display performance. In addition, 100Hz technology further improved video quality. While conventional video is made from a picture with 50 frames per second, 100Hz technology produces video with 100 frames per second to provide smooth, natural pictures even in quickly moving scenes. 100Hz technology is made possible by Sharp s unique LSI, which supplements the preceding and following scenes to produce a new picture. The LCD itself, however, is not a single entity but a blend of dozens of liquid crystal materials such as one with quick response according to the change in voltage and one with a high degree of light transparency. Making a display with the optimal mixture of types requires numerous complicated and time-consuming processes. Also, the liquid crystal particles must be controlled at the nano-particle level to operate at the intended speed and in the intended direction. Although the complexity of this control seems to require almost supernatural power, Sharp has more than 30 years of experience in testing these processes on a daily basis. 04

5 Picture Technology No Instruction Manual for the World of Beauty Molding Technology to Blend High Technology and Craftsmanship The questions of what picture quality is and what beauty is reach a certain conclusion : Displaying the beauty of the natural world as it is and in the way that the creator of the content intends the image to be reproduced. This is the picture quality that AQUOS aims for. The green of a forest and the green of a traffic signal must each appear on the screen as they do in nature to our eyes. The red of an apple and the red of a tomato must be different at a glance. People s skin must appear with colour gradations in order to seem vivid. To achieve these requirements, Sharp has developed four particular elements of picture quality in AQUOS with optimal balance : contrast, colour gradation, sharpness and vividness. In achieving this development of picture quality, however, there are aspects that cannot be expressed in numerical values. This aspect is the element of beauty. As the performance of LCD panels continues to improve in the future, Sharp will further strive to focus on this sense of genuine beauty. The various pieces that comprise an LCD TV are molded from plastic. In the molding process, melted material is injected into a pair of hollow metal dies and then cooled. The gap between the dies must be less than 0.03 mm. If it is any larger, the molding material will escape. A pair of dies must be designed so that some parts have zero gap and other parts have a small gap but no material escapes. For the 65-inch AQUOS, the dies are 2 m long with a weight more than 20,000 kg, and these huge slabs of iron must be made with great precision from one edge to the other. In addition, the texture and feel of the dies, as well as the overall design must produce a sense of artistic elegance. The piano finish is applied with a uniform colour coating that gives the impression of impeccable lacquerware. The ability to achieve the glossy finish that gives the impression of traditional masterpiece starts with the selection of die materials for unprecedented high-precision molding and ends with polishing by human hands. 05

6 One second on an AQUOS produces one hundred pictures to deliver smooth and precise motion. 100Hz Technology AQUOS models use 100Hz technology developed from Sharp s highly advanced LCD expertise. This provides a picture with 100 frames per second (double the conventional 50 frames per second) by supplementing the picture from the preceding and following scenes using Sharp s unique algorithm. Also, the technology coupled with the ASV LCD, developed for high-speed moving images, provides smooth and clear pictures for quick-moving sports scenes and clear lettering in moving captions without motion blur. 7 With colours faithfully reproduced and high contrast, you will clearly see the difference between dusk and dawn on an AQUOS. Dynamic Contrast The latest LCD technology achieves a high contrast ratio of 20,000:1 (37/32D65, 37/32DH65). This enhances clarity and expressiveness of colours, providing more realistic pictures with fine gradations for movies and other video content. The pure panel can produce er s and vivid colours even in brightly lit living rooms to a degree possible only with LCD. Its finely honed features deliver performance befitting this era of the environment, including energy efficiency, low resource utilisation, long service life, use of environmentally sound materials and design for recycling. The cogeneration system using LNG (liquid natural gas) A 1,000-kW fuel cell system, the largest of its kind in Japan Kameyama Modern production plant with advanced environmental technology In August 2006, Sharp opened its second production facility for LCD TVs at Kameyama in Japan. The Kameyama Plant No.2 sets strict standards for protecting the environment, as Kameyama Plant No.1 already does. This is the world s first facility to use eighth-generation glass substrates, which are roughly twice as large as substrates used in the first plant. About one-third of the electrical energy needed for production at the plant is generated in combined heat and power systems run on natural gas. Waste heat is recovered and used in air conditioning, for heating water and for producing steam. The huge photovoltaic systems assist the cogeneration system in producing energy. In addition, all the waste water is collected from the production process and recycled with water purification technology. The plant is an environmentally improved factory with highly advanced technology that Sharp always strives for.
