3 DIRECTV HS17 Genie 2 If you look at the coax input, it is labeled SWM15, suggesting it supports 15 channels. In fact, the Genie 2 uses up to 11 channels with two bonded (1 nominal plus 2 additional for bonding) to support the capability to simultaneously view/record up to 7 channels at any given time (including up to two 4K UHD channels). 4K UHD will utilize bonded transponders, requiring use of three SWM channels.

4 DIRECTV HS17 Home Server There are three ways to connect the Genie 2 to the internet. The preferred way is wired, via plugging in an Ethernet cable directly from your home network to the Giga Ethernet port on the Genie 2. Secondly, you can use a BBDECA. Finally, the Genie 2 will connect to your home wireless internet via a 2.4 Ghz range. It uses 5 GHz wireless for the internal WVB (wireless video bridge) to connect wireless clients and also supports an external WVB for extended range if needed. The Genie 2 requires a Reverse Band (RB) DSWM22 LNB for most installs, which implies a mandatory truck roll for upgrade to/installation of a Genie 2. While it will actually work on a standard SWM LNB (or multi switch), policy requires the RBDSWM22 LNB to support transponder bonding when it is implemented. This LNB does not support the World Direct dish, but there will be support for that later this year for customers with international programming. At launch time SWM-8/16/32 installs may be allowed for MDU and International World Direct customers until the new LNB is released. Full client tracking is being introduced with the Genie 2. This results in formal tracking of all clients on an account using correct information from the label on the client, and thus eliminates the need to use a PIN number to add a client. Some additional facts and information about the Genie 2: It does NOT support OTA in any form. The AM21 does not work with the Genie 2. The outboard power supply connector is unique, you must use the correct power adapter with the Genie 2 No telephone input port no caller ID. No Picture-in-Picture. You cannot have any other DirecTV receivers or DVRs active on the same account as a Genie 2 Like all Genies, you can only have one Genie 2 active on an account. The ESPN App (ESPN3) is temporarily not supported, but will be included in the near future.

5 DIRECTV HS17 Home Server DIRECTV has taken its Genie product family to the next level with the Genie 2. The Genie 2 was introduced to testing as the HS17 Headless Server, which means it has no local output to a television and provides service only through Genie clients and DirecTV ready RVU television sets. For those DIRECTV customers used to the typical look of a set top box, the Genie 2 takes a new direction. But the form factor of this 4K/HD DVR has two very good reasons. The design is such that the built in Wireless Video Bridge will be better able to supply wireless clients with a quality signal, and to ensure proper air flow and cooling. Being headless, the Genie 2 can be placed within easy connecting distance to an internet router, and in a location more central to the entire house/structure it is serving. However, it should not be placed within 4 feet of an existing WiFi device to reduce possibility of interference. This Genie can t lay down on the job. If you lay it down, you ll get a prompt on your TV that says Help, I ve fallen and I can t get up!. There is also a warning if it gets too hot (so don t cover it with anything). You need to remember three numbers for the Genie 2: 1, 2 and It can download or stream 1 on demand program at a time. 2 It can Handle two 4K streams at a time either recording or streaming (Record 2, Record 1/ Stream 1 or Stream 2) 7 - It can record and/or stream to clients for live viewing up to 7 total satellite channels at a time. The channels can be any combination of SD, HD and 4K (keeping in mind only two 4K channels can be recorded/watched at any one time). At this time, the mobile device will only be able to stream in SD from a Genie 2 (and streaming to the mobile device does count as one of your 7 viewing locations). You can actually have 8 clients (genie minis or RVU TV s) registered to a Genie 2 at any one time, but only 7 can be in use at any given time.

History of the Cutting Edge The Cutting Edge program started with a partnership between DIRECTV and hobbyist Earl Bonovich, Earl had been known for his reviews of the DIRECTV R10 and R15 DVRs. In 2005 Earl was asked to join the staff at DBSTalk and he was able to build the bridge between DBSTalk and the DIRECTV engineering department. In 2006 DIRECTV released the HR20 HD DVR, later in 2006 Earl announced the first optional download for DIRECTV receivers and the Cutting Edge was born. Since then thousands of downloads have been available over the entire DIRECTV line of receivers.
