8 PROFILE OF THIS UNIT This unit incorporates a sophisticated, muti-program digita sound fied processor. The processor aows you to eectronicay expand and change the shape of the audio sound fied from both audio and video sources, creating a theater-ike experience in your istening room. This unit has a tota of 1 digita sound fied processor (DSP) modes. You can create an exceent audio sound fied by seecting a suitabe sound fied (this wi, of course, depend on what you wi be istening to), and adding desired adjustments. In addition, this unit incorporates a Doby Pro Logic Surround decoder and Doby Digita (C-) decoder for muti-channe sound reproduction of Doby Surround encoded video sources. The operation of the Doby Pro Logic Surround or Doby Digita (C-) decoder can be controed by seecting a corresponding DSP program incuding combined operations of the Yamaha DSP and the Doby Pro Logic Surround or Doby Digita (C-) decoder. Digita Sound Fied Processing What is it that makes ive music so good? Today s advanced sound reproduction technoogy ets you get extremey cose to the sound of a ive performance, but chances are you sti notice something missing, the acoustic environment of the ive concert ha. Extensive research into the exact nature of the sonic refections that create the ambience of a arge ha has made it possibe for Yamaha engineers to bring you this same sound in your own istening room, so you fee a the sound of a ive concert. Furthermore, our technicians, armed with sophisticated measuring equipment, have even made it possibe to capture the acoustics of a variety of actua concert has, jazz cubs, theaters, etc. from around the word, to aow you to accuratey recreate any one of these ive performance environments, a in your own home. Doby Pro Logic Surround This unit empoys a Doby Pro Logic Surround decoder simiar to professiona Doby Stereo decoders used in many movie theaters. y using the Doby Pro Logic Surround decoder, you can experience the dramatic reaism and impact of Doby Surround movie theater sound in your own home. Doby Pro Logic empoys a four channe five speaker system. The Pro Logic Surround system divides the input signa into four eves: the eft and right main channes, the center channe (used for diaog), and the rear surround sound channes (used for sound effects, background noise, and other ambient noises). The center channe aows isteners seated in even ess-than-idea positions to hear the diaog originating from the action on the screen whie experiencing good stereo imaging. Doby Surround is encoded on the sound track of pre-recorded video tapes, aser discs, and some /cabe broadcasts. When you pay a source encoded with Doby Surround on this unit, the Doby Pro Logic Surround decoder decodes the signa and distributes the surround-sound effects. This Doby Pro Logic Surround Decoder empoys a digita signa processing system. This system improves the stabiity of sound at each channe and crosstak between channes, so that positioning of sounds around the room is more accurate compared with conventiona anaog signa processing systems. In addition, this unit features a buit-in automatic input baance contro. This aways assures you the best performance without manua adjustment. Doby Digita (C-) The buit-in Doby Digita (C-) Decoder eads you into a totay new sound experiences. Doby Digita (C-) is a new generation of muti-channe digita audio technoogy, or the newest spatia sound processing format deveoped for 5 mm fim-movies by empoying a new kind of ow bit-rate audio coding. Doby Digita (C-) is a digita surround sound system that provides competey independent muti-channe audio to consumers. In muti-channe form, Doby Digita (C-) provides five fu range channes in what is sometimes referred to as a / configuration: three front channes (eft, center and right), pus two surround channes. sixth bass-ony effect channe is aso provided for output of LFE (ow frequency effect), or ow bass effects that are independent of other channes. This channe is counted as.1, thus giving rise to the term 5.1 channes in tota. Compared to Doby Pro Logic that is referred to a /1 system (eft front, center, right front and just one surround channe), Doby Digita (C-) features two surround channes, caed stereo or spit surrounds, each offering the same fu range fideity as the three front channes. Sound of wide dynamic range reproduced by the five fu range channes presents isteners much excitement that has never been experienced before. Precise sound orientation by the discrete digita sound processing expands reaism that the origina movie possesses. Laser Disc and DVD are home audio formats that coud benefit from Doby Digita (C-). In the near future, Doby Digita (C- ) wi aso be appied to DS, C and HD. The ongoing reease of Doby Stereo Digita theatrica fims now underway wi provide an immediate source of Doby Digita (C-) encoded video software. 6

Copyright 199 Doby Laboratories, Inc. rights reserved. The foowing origina functions make the surround-sound effect of Doby Digita (C-) become the most suitabe for your audio system and the istening conditions. Dynamic range (sound scae) of source can be changed so that it wi be suitabe for the istening conditions. Output of ow bass from any channe can be assigned to either the MIN SPEKERS terminas or SUWOOFER termina to maximize system performance. Output of LFE can be assigned to either the MIN SPEKERS terminas or SUWOOFER termina to maximize system performance. Engish Doby Surround + DSP (CINEM DSP) Doby Surround sound system shows its fu abiity in a arge movie theater, because movie sounds are originay designed to be reproduced in a arge movie theater using many speakers. It is difficut to create a sound environment simiar to that of a movie theater in your istening room, because the room size, materias of inside was, the number of speakers, etc. of your istening room is much different from those of a movie theater. Yamaha DSP technoogy made it possibe to present you with neary the same sound experience as that of a arge movie theater in your istening room by compensating for ack of presence and dynamics in your istening room with its origina digita sound fieds combined with Doby Surround sound fied. CINEM DSP The YMH CINEM DSP ogo indicates those programs are created by the combination of Doby Surround and YMH DSP technoogy. Doby Pro Logic + Digita Sound Fieds Digita sound fieds are created on the presence side and the rear surround side of the Doby Pro Logic Surrounddecoded sound fied respectivey. They create a wide acoustic environment and emphasize surround-effect in the room, etting you fee much presence as if you are watching a movie in a popuar Doby Stereo theater. This combination is avaiabe when the sound fied program No., No. or No. is seected, and the input signa of source is anaog, PCM audio or encoded with the Doby Digita (C-) in -channes. Doby Digita (C-) + Digita Sound Fieds Digita sound fieds are created on the presence side and the independent eft and right surround sides of the Doby Digita (C-)-decoded sound fied respectivey. They create a wide acoustic environment and much surround effect in the room without osing high channe separation. With wide dynamic range of Doby Digita (C-) sound, this sound fied combination ets you fee as if you are watching a movie in the newest Doby Stereo Digita theater. This wi be the most idea home theater sound at the present time. This combination is avaiabe when the sound fied program No., No. or No. is seected, and the input signa of source is encoded with the Doby Digita (C-) (except in -channes). 7

10 SPEKER SETUP SPEKERS TO E USED This unit is designed to provide the best sound-fied quaity with a 5 speaker configuration, using main speakers, rear speakers and a center speaker. The main speakers are used for the main source sound pus the effect sounds. They wi probaby be the speakers from your present stereo system. The rear speakers are used for the effect and surround sounds, and the center speaker is for the center sounds (diaog, vocas, etc.). If for some reason it is not practica to use a center speaker, you can do without it. est resuts, however, are obtained with the fu system. Use of a subwoofer expands your sound fied It is aso possibe to further expand your system with the addition of a subwoofer and ampifier. The use of a subwoofer is effective not ony for reinforcing bass frequencies from any or a channes, but aso for reproducing the LFE (ow frequency effect) sound with high fideity when paying back a source with the Doby Digita (C-) decoded. You may wish to choose the convenience of a Yamaha ctive Servo Processing Subwoofer System, which has its own buit-in power ampifier. The main speakers shoud be high performance modes and have enough power handing capacity to accept the maximum output of your audio system. Other speakers do not have to be equa to the main speakers. For precise sound ocaization, however, it is idea to use high performance modes that can reproduce sounds in fu range for the center speaker and the rear speakers. SPEKER CONFIGURTION 5-Speaker Configuration This configuration is the most effective and recommended one. When paying back a source using the DSP program, DIGITL (PRO LOGIC), DIGITL (PRO LOGIC) ENHNCED, DIGITL (7 mm) MOVIE THETER or SPORTS, or when paying back a source which contains center-channe signas (diaog, vocas, etc.) using any DSP program with the Doby Digita (C-) decoded, conversations wi be output from the center speaker and the ambience wi be exceent. Note: Set the CENTER SPEKER mode to the NORML or WIDE position. (For detais, refer to page.) -Speaker Configuration The center speaker is not used in this configuration. When paying back a source using the DSP program, DIGITL (PRO LOGIC), DIGITL (PRO LOGIC) ENHNCED, DIGITL (7 mm) MOVIE THETER or SPORTS, or when paying back a source which contains center-channe signas (diaog, vocas, etc.) using any DSP program with the Doby Digita (C-) decoded, the center sound is output from the eft and the right main speakers. However, the sound effect of other programs can be the same as that of the 5-speaker configuration. Note: e sure to set the CENTER SPEKER mode to the PHNTOM position. (For detais, refer to page.) If you wi do so, connect it to the COXIL digita signa input termina of this unit, and connect the RF demoduator to the OPTICL digita signa input termina of this unit. y this connection, if the input mode of the source is in UTO, you can enjoy istening to sounds with the Doby Digita (C-) decoded when you pay a disc encoded with the Doby Digita (C-) though signas are input to both OPTICL and COXIL digita signa input terminas of this unit simutaneousy (because signas input to the OPTICL termina take priority of signas input to the COXIL termina). See page 9 for detais about switching the input mode. Engish It is aso necessary to connect the LD payer to this unit s anaog audio signa input terminas regardess of the C- RF signa connection, for paying back an LD source with the Doby Pro Logic Surround decoded or in norma stereo (or monaura). If you do so, when you pay a disc encoded with the Doby Digita (C-), the Doby Digita (C-) wi not be decoded because the - channe audio signas input to this unit s OPTICL digita input termina are seected prior to the signas encoded with the Doby Digita (C-) input to this unit s COXIL digita input termina by way of an RF demoduator. If, for exampe, you pay a CD on the LD payer (which can pay a CD aso), there is no input to the OPTICL termina, so the signas input to the COXIL termina take priority. In this case, switch off the RF demoduator to isten to CD sound surey. However, if your RF demoduator is the Yamaha mode PD-1, you do not have to switch it off. When you want to pay a source encoded with the Doby Digita (C-) without decoding the Doby Digita (C-), you must switch off the power to the RF demoduator. 1
